Early Riser gets the worm? I think that's the cliche isn't it? Well, I was certainly amongst the early risers this morning. Miss guaged the time difference on my ipod and ended up rising at 5:30 AM versus my desired 6:30 AM wake up time. We needed to our tour stop no later than 8:20 today and we wanted to get breakfast first, so we agreed to meet up at 7:00 to allow for time to eat McDs and time for any delays on the tube station. We were being picked up near the Greater Portland Street tube station and it was a new line for us, so we decided to give it plenty of time.
Today was the day that we had the guided tour to Stonehenge and Bath. We hopped on our luxury coach bus with Paul our bus driver and Fiona our tour guide. The Stonehenge was roughly 1:45 from London. We had another perfect weather day. The sun was shiny and the stones were still standing when we got there. We even got a little tour of the english countryside along the way.
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument dated as early as 2500 BC and
is located in the English county of Wiltshire. It is composed of blue earth rocks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It's considered to be the most complex Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England. The real purpose of the Stonehenge is still up for debate. Some believe it to be burial grounds while others believe it to be simply a ritualistic mound. It was neat to see the wallpaper that's probably on most computers up close and personal. The age of the stones was quite amazing.
From Stonehenge, we drove another 1:30 to the city of Bath. First stop, the Roman Baths. The Bath house was used by the Romans back in the day for public bathing. The Romans would come to the baths to cure their aches and pains, as well as to socialize. All the baths remain below street level and the hot springs still run today. We didn't quite make it to the Circle and the Crescent. So I didn't get to recreate my Jane Elliot moment from Persuasion. BUT Bath is definitely worth coming back to visit. Maybe even to stay. Oh, we also had lunch at Pret a Manger. Had a
very good cheese, prosciutto, basil and tomato baguette. Yum. I tell ya, haven't been disappointed with a meal yet.
We left Bath around 4:30 and headed back to London Central. As we approached the city, we finally saw our first spot of rain. Thankfully we were on the bus, so we didn't get wet. Rob and the kids headed back to the hotel for dinner and the pool, while Betsy, Aunt Poysee and myself, headed to PIcadilly for some last minute shopping. Mon... picked up your loud London tshirt. :O) Hope you like it. Chris, hope you like your tshirt.
We had dinner in Picadilly at Yo Sushi. It was the type of Sushi place that had the belt that went around with the color coded plates. Sushi was good, but I've also had better, BUT the experience was nice. It was very well done too (with a minor exception.) As the chef would make the plates, they would cover it and stamp a time on the top. That way they knew when something went on the belt and when it was sitting out too long. So if it was 20:00, the chef would stamp 22:00 on it.
So as 22:00 rolled around and it was still on the belt, they knew it was sitting out for 2 hours and that it was time to take it off. AND as a patron, you knew that it was fairly fresh comparative to the time on the plate. Well done.
So now I think we've hit all the major cuisines. Pubs, Indian, Chinese, Japanese..... From where I stand... I still vote for the Pubs as my favorite cuisine!
Tomorrow is our last day :O(. Think we're headed to the Botanical Gardens and maybe the HMS Belfast.
Happy Easter one and all. One day closer to coming home and seeing everyone.
