We left beautiful Newstead Abbey Monday morning and headed north to Whitby, with a planned stop in York. I had visited both of these areas when I was younger visiting our family one summer. My sister wanted to see both places and my dad loves beach towns. So we were looking forward to our first tourist activity. It was a cold and windy day, but at least the sun was out! The weather was slowly improving. We drove through some nice little villages until we wound up in a city parking lot on the south side of the city. Our first stop was Clifford's Tower, where we picked up our English Heritage passes. These were worth it, especially for me and my sister (my parents were not overly tourist site ambitious). It is a 9-day oversea ... read more

Having looked at the weather forecast for the next couple of days, we decided that tomorrow would be the best day for exploring the surrounding area, so today was the day for the City of York. We had decided that we would visit the York Castle Museum, then the Clifford's Tower (which was right next to the museum). After breakfast we headed down to the Museum. The building had been used for a number of purposes over the years, including a prison, so was divided into sections covering the different aspects of the building, and also important periods of time in York itself. York has been associated with a number of confectionery businesses - Terry's, Rowntrees, and more- so there was a chocolate theme running through the displays too. In one section there is a cobbled ... read more

This week, York is celebrating it's viking heritage with the largest Viking Festival in Europe. The original Viking festival celebrated the coming of spring. Tolkein-Dwarvian men will compete for best beard, learn how to fire arrows, fight with long swords and conserve archaeological finds. To celebrate my viking heritage, I learnt to wield a long sword (youtube + wooden spoon = close enough) and knit weave metal, all whilst drinking ale (much like cognac in January, this ale is not my cup of tea). Please enjoy the picture of the bus. Coming up this week - Mother Langugae Day, St Lucian Independence, Mash, Mahashivaratri, N'cwala and Wear Red Day. Any festivals coming up that I should be celebrating? Message me here, or tweet me @fighiggins.... read more

The drive from Oxford to York is three and a half hours, so leaving Oxford at 9:30 am should get us to York comfortably by 1:00 pm; right? Absolutely! So at 4:30 pm we pulled into York. Those of you still awake after reading our previous blog may have noted a discrepancy here. Yes, thrillseekers; a three and a half hour discrepancy. Did we get lost? No. Did we break down? No. Welcome to the M1 and British traffic jams. A combination of road works and a road accident left us with no real alternative. BBC Radio Two was excellent at entertaining us and keeping us up to date while we turned off the engine and sat with all three lanes completely stationary. The locals stuck with us on the M1 agreed that there was no ... read more

York is a beautiful walled city with a fascinating history from Roman times, through Viking invasions, and mediaeval machinations of the Wars of the Roses. I hadn't realised that the House of York has nothing to do with York, but is mainly the more southerly aristocratic families. The people of York would have supported the Lancastrians. I visited the Richard III experience in Monkbar, (a tower and gate in the wall) and the Henry VII experience further along the wall in Mickelgate). They had a film show of the human remains found in the Leicestershire car park, showing the reaction of the archaeologists when they got confirmation of the DNA match proving it was the remains of Richard III. (I think Leicester deserve to keep the remains as York has enough history of its own and ... read more

York YHA is in a good location to take the Ouse riverwalk into the city. The hop-on/hop-off bus pass both provide a good orientation and transporatation. Phil and I split up as we anticipated different interests. York Museum and Gardens included ruins. York Castle Museum was a little pricey, but turned out to be quite interesting. You could spend all day, as many displays include a good deal of reading. The portion including the prison was interesting. History of incarceration. And projected video images on cell walls with inmates describing the conditions. A good chunk of the day was meandering in and out of churches. I really missed the grandkids when visiting the National Railway Museum...they would have loved it. The people working there truly enjoy sharing knowledge about the history of railroads. it felt rather odd today to get up and not put on hiking boots and head East! i still managed to walk 8 miles exploring York but it definitely wasn't a hike! I do want to catch up in the last two days of the Coast to Coast. We left our wonderful farm on Friday morning in the misty rain. We were hopeful that the heavy rain was ending and most of us shed our rain pants in the first hour when we were walking through a beautiful wooded area. This path ended at a lovely waterfall with an outdoor tearoom where we had tea and other goodies. It didn't matter that we had just had a full English breakfast just two hours earlier! Unfortunately, our hopes of improving weather were dashed as we headed into ... read more

(We can tell I'm getting towards the end of my trip/I'm getting close to London times as I start only doing these every two days.) Yesterday I took the train from Liverpool to York which isn't all that long. It was oddly busy for the middle of the week... I had a reserved seat though, so it didn't matter for me, but still. I was so happy to get to York - I've heard a lot of great things, it's nice to finally come. Also nice to get out of Liverpool - I think I'm just holding a grudge from when I lost my phone last time haha, but anyway. I spent a good chunk of the day at the Museum Gardens, roaming around the park, soaking up the sun (YES SUNLIGHT!) and walking along the ... read more
