We had a great time exploring Brighton, walking along the promenade and pier and then visiting the amazing Brighton Pavillion with its incredible architecture and certainly not one would expect from the outside. Next stop was Duke of Wellington’s house and then Dover Castle and the White cliffs of Dover! We have now joined both the National Trust and also English Heritage, allowing us free access from now on to many historical sites which makes sense as we really enjoy visiting mansions, castles, ruins and famous people’s houses. Yesterday we visited Winston Churchill’s house and today Charles Darwin’s house, both so very interesting. Tonight we are parked by a 16th century pub that has 280 hectares of woodland next to it which is full of grey squirrels and so so cute. We visited a British wildlife ... read more

The Tour de France had a profound effect on sport in Yorkshire. A county famed for it's sporting heritage. The all dominant Leeds United football team are no longer a force - turned into a sorry state by a few recent years of miss-management and poor ownership choices. Jason has brought back a spell of success for the cricket connoisseurs and across the Headingly way, the Rhinos have been top dogs. Cycling, though - it was never in the frame. The choice of the Tour de France organising committee to favour Leeds with a Grand Depart in 2014 changed all that. Cycling has exploded. Real men wearing lycra now abound the back lanes. The Tour went off on a magical merry-go-round, showcasing the tourism prospects of God's own country. The Stray at Harrogate to the cobbles ... read more

Where in the world is Suzy? It is Day 5 of 120 days . 5 Days have passed since we returned home and there are 115 left before we head off on holiday again. So what is Suzy doing? Not a lot . Her windscreen has been repaired . Not an easy job. The call to the insurance company went well however the call was dropped between insurance company and windscreen company and when we got back on it turned out they wanted to charge us £15 for the repair . Sorted in the end and Suzy is now looking good. The weather has been unkind since we arrived home. Although it starts bright in the mornings by mid afternoon it feels colder by a few degrees and rains. We don't want to be here and ... read more

Continuing to indulge my obsession with Captain Cook, this morning we headed off to North Yorkshire where James was born and lived until he joined the navy in his mid-twenties. In the past we have headed north-east towards the Yorkshire Moors from Stalybridge by cutting up through Mossley, Uppermill, Dobcross and Denshaw to pick up the M62 at Junction 22. With Bernie being more than happy to take Ken's directions we actually headed west around the M60 ring road before joining the M62 at Junction 18. It's hard to say which is better. I guess the traffic on the motorway travels faster than it does going through all the small villages on the A roads?? The traffic was moving pretty well until we merged with the M1 to the south of Leeds. For some reason the ... read more

We had some trepidation about leaving York to cross the North York Moors to get to the North Sea coast. For one thing we knew that we would be leaving the relaively flat terrain starting about 20 miles to the north. There was the steep climb over the Howardian Hills before Pickering and then the long climb upto the moors and the ravines that cut through it. For another, it had become windy and rainy while we were in York, and more of the same was promised for the next few days. On the positive side we were well rested and well fed and, thanks to Karen and Kathy's mapping and good advice from the folks at York's Cycle Heaven, we had a good traffic-free route to Pickering and from there a back road route on ... read more

Our drive today took us through farmland that is beginning to look as though the growing season is almost over. Even the green deciduous trees have a tired look and in many places autumn colours are making an appearance. With a blue sky liberally laced with huge rain clouds and a powerful wind from the west, we powered up the A1, then took a route to the east as we headed for the coast. We had decided earlier that as Kiwis abroad we must call and see Captain Cook in his home town of Whitby. The road we took crossed the North York Moors, where we were impressed and delighted by the huge vistas and the great expanses of purple heather in flower all over the highest areas. Add the lowering clouds and flashes of sunlight ... read more

Our Coast to Coast (C2C) hiking adventure continues - PART TWO So we’re half way and very grateful that we’ve remained injury-free and blister-free. We have met quite a few walkers who are hobbling along the roads rather than trails due to their injuries. By the way, England is currently suffering the coldest summer in 18 years. We can attest to that, bit chilly love. We heard the funniest comment from Les in Reeth, who said ‘I like dry, can’t guarantee sun, last time we had 2 weeks of sun was in 1976’. Sun 28 Aug From Kirkby Stephen to Keld (22km) So onward we go to ‘THE BOGS’ for our next walk. What are the ‘bogs’ you ask? This is the water table of where all the infant rivers into the River Swale and ... read more

“So Cook made choice, so Cook sailed westabout, So men write poems (and BLOGS) in Australia.” FIVE VISIONS OF CAPTAIN COOK – Kenneth Slessor And the n one day you find Ten years have got behind You, no one told you when to run You missed the starting gun TIME – Pink Floyd This trip has seemed longer that our previous sojourn. We believe it to be because we are basically in the same country. Last time it was 2 weeks per country approximately. This time everyone speaks English (sort of) and the time has not dragged but it has not had the same punctuation points. It FEELS like we’ve been travelling forever. It’s been nearly 6 weeks.
