The shortest day. Woke up with a spring in our step today - only 10.5 miles today! A breeze. Porridge for Ellis and a full English for me and then we hit the road, leaving Reeth to continue our journey east. Crossed the bridge out of Reeth and was confused as to what is so valuable in the town that they need a super armoured police vehicle guarding the town - and I mean one with proper armour and big guns! This is Sichi Runak‘s constituency so maybe it’s to protect him from all his local fan club….. Saw some grouse, sheep and cows across the North Yorkshire Dales as we ambled across those rolling dales. Most run from us humans, so that’s okay; but one stubborn cow that was directly on our path refused to ... read more

After an evening of listening to a couple of hikers, German woman and English man, chat and top trump each-other in walking stories (think they were flirting with the blokes mate not seeming too impressed) we were grateful they headed to their own tents to sleep as we did too. Sleeping well, we had planned a lie in to get breaky at a bike cafe at the beginning of the trail at 9, but we ended up being awake, up and ready to go by 8! Not wanting to hang around we decided to cook up porridge before setting off in the sunshine, for the 17km walk to Richmond. Spotting and passing some other walkers, we followed the quiet road down and round into a small wooded section, which was hiding the first steep incline. Levelling ... read more

31 August 2019, Saturday Transition from the coast to coast to the Thames Path walk. Day 15 of travel. I left Chuck, Ruth Ann and Jim at the Keld Lodge about 8 30 in the morning and was given a ride by Chris, the coast to coast Packhorse van driver, to Richmond. The three of them then set off on the coast to coast walk to the town of Reeth. About 4 weeks ago a flash flood came roaring down one of the roads from the mountains and nearly wiped out the community of Reeth along the Swale River. Their annual festival was held last weekend. The community rallied to clear the debris from the fairgrounds and the festival went on as scheduled. But at the lowest end of the valley along the Swale River you ... read more

The accommodation the previous night had been a bit ropey dogs were certainly more welcome than their human counterparts which was great for Jess and Zulu, not so much for the rest of our group! The staff were a little abrupt and made a mess of our evening meal also I don't think our mattress had been changed since the Viking hoards had passed through some years before! It was with weary legs, a tired mind but a great 'let's be avin it' spirit that I set off on this slightly kinder 10.5 mile walk, the weather was great at least in fact it was decidedly hot! The sun was strong and a steep climb soon presented itself in front of the group, at least the terrain was kind being of solid track and flat stones ... read more

Saturday 27th May. It was Cup Final Day. There was excitement in the air. Well there probably was 238 miles to the south where Chelsea were preparing to meet Arsenal, but there was no visible outward signs of football fever in a small North Yorkshire market town. The Wearside Shipowners Charity Cup Final isn’t something you would associate in this inland, rural spot. As a relatively new outpost of the Wearside League, Richmond Town, were possibly not what was envisaged as potential trophy winners in a League predominantly based around Sunderland. The opposition, Cleator Moor Celtic, hail from across the hills in Cumbria. They once hit the heights of the FA Cup First Round in 1950. Today was one of the shortest journeys of the season for Cleator Moor – a not to be under-estimated round ... read more
