After our sojourn in Ireland, Caribbean Princess returned to the UK where our next port of call was Liverpool. Liverpool was a city I very much wanted to visit. My great-grandparents had sailed from here for America. Several of my ancestors lived or were married here. Iron frame and brick with stone dressings, iron clad roof. 5 storeys, 17 bays, with 7 x 3-bay recess; facade to dock has recessed ground floor with Doric colonnade of iron columns above rubble granite dock wall. Rusticated quoins and parapet. Segmental-headed windows, those to east are mostly blind. War damage at north end remains unrepaired, revealing structure. Albert Dock is one of the earliest enclosed docks in the world and is a complete example of the type". Grade I listed building. List entry Number: 1205175. Canning Half Tide Dock. Hydraulic Pumping Station to East of Canning Half-Tide Dock. Pumps were fitted to the graving docks in 1829 so that they could be emptied even when the wet dock is full. Adaptive reuse as The Pump House Public House. "Former Hydraulic Engine house, accumulator tower and chimney,1870s. Brick with stone dressings, slate roof. Engine house has gable with louvre. Round chimney on square base has machicolated cap to north. Lower part of accumulator tower to south". Grade II listed building. List entry Number: 1280849. Memorial to Sir Alfred Lewis Jones. Sir Alfred Lewis Jones (1845-1909) was a Liverpool shipbuilder and entrepreneur. Pier Head. "Monument. 1913. Stone plinth, square stone pedestal with bronze bust in laurel wreath, and bronze allegorical figures at base (fruits of industry, research and enterprise). Standing crowned female figure on top". Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas. Old Churchyard, Chapel Street. "Church. Tower is now the oldest part, built 1811-15 by Thomas Harrison of Chester, ashlar in Decorated Gothic style, 4 angle buttresses terminating in crocketed finials, with flying buttress supporting a graceful open lantern, which is surmounted by a ship weather vane. The rest of the church is 1952 by Edward C Butler, after war damage, in Perpendicular Gothic". "...the church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of mariners. This church was the first founded in Liverpool, of which it was the original parish-church; the present building, however, dates only from the 18th cent., while the tower, with its lantern, was erected in 1815 on the fall of an older one".--Baedeker Grade II listed building. List entry Number: 1205993. My great-great-grandparents, Joseph Barlow and Nancy Hewitt, were married here in 1853. My great-great-great-grandmother, Sarah Youds, was baptised here in 1807.
