Day 16: London, England Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 So it was the end of our Topdeck Journey, but the beginning of our journey in London, England. Today Renata, Kathy and I got a London Pass to explore the major sights of London. But first we went to the Evans Evans tour company by Victoria station to book a tour to see Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath the next day. We decided to first glaze upon the crown jewels found at the Tower of London. We got our own guided tour of the Tower of London from a Beefeater, dressed in their very own beefeater outfit. Apparently, they live in the Tower of London.
After the Tower of London we headed over to and London Bridge Experience and the London Tombs. In this interactive experience, actors delve through the history of the London Bridge. And afterwards, we went to our very own Screamers experience, at the London Tombs. It was way dark and scary!!!
Then it was off to lunch and up to St. Paul's Cathedral, a walk across the Millennium bridge, and a look at the Globe Theatre ( it was closed when we got there) before we
headed back to our cousins house.
Day 17: Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath, Friday October 23rd, 2009 So today we got see three well known sights in England (Windsor, Castle, Stonehenge and Bath). Renata and I have both been to Windsor Castle but we have never seen Stonehenge or Bath. I was excited to get to visit Stonehenge.
Windsor Castle was a beautiful castle. It sort of reminded my of Versailles in France, but only this time we could not take pictures which really sucked. The day we arrived at Windsor Castle was also the day that the Queen was having some form of ceremony, so the road was closes and there were people everywhere. We could have missed our coach to Stonehenge since the coach station was on the other side of the closed road, if it were not for us begging the police officers to let up through.
After Windsor castle, we were off to the mystical Stonehenge. There are numerous stories on how Stonehenge was built and what it was used for. Perhaps, aliens or a religious cult. Nevertheless, it was a sight to behold (and the audio guide description was really good).
It was too bad that we were unable to go inside the circle to touch the stones. Well I guess thats whats happens when they want to preserve this UNESCO world heritage site ;-).
After an hour at Stonehenge, we headed off to Bath, where we got to witness the Roman Baths. The water was green (too much algae) and definitely not pleasant enough to swim in. Nevertheless, apparently it had healing properties and people drink the water (at a inflated cost) when it's purified of course. Bath was also a very nice town and it would have been nice to get out and explore. But alas there was no time and we had to head back on the coach to London.
Day 18: Stratford upon Avon, Saturday October 24th, 2009 Today, our cousin Jean took us to see Shakespeares birthplace, Stratford upon Avon. We took a train ride from London to Warwick, and we were planning on taking a train from Warwick to Stratford upon Avon. However, they cancelled all the train rides to Stratford, so we found a bus that took the scenic tour from Warwick to Stratford. The entire day was gloomy with on
and off showers. In Stratford, when the rain finally cleared we saw where Shakespeares lived, which was pretty interesting. His home was turned it into a museum about his life. We also saw Anne Hathaway's house, but we were not able to get in because it was closed. Its actually pretty far from Shakespeares house, which didn't appear so on the map. After our long walk, we headed out to dinner at a local pub and then headed back home.
Day 19: London, England to Toronto, Canada Sunday October 25th, 2009 So that was the end of a great trip. Now time to save up for my next trip!!!!
