The fortunes of a seaside resort can be fickle. We know this, growing up in the North East Premier Seaside Resort. The visions of upmarket Victorian society can be lost in the mists of time. A lot changed in the period between 1870 and 1970. Two World Wars. A beach, no longer flat enough to race motorbikes or attempt land speed records. Cheap holidays to Spain and beyond. In recent years, the not so desirable has once again become fashionable. There has been talk in certain circles of Saltburn becoming the 'new" Brighton, although the "new" Brighton could indeed be Ramsgate. All of which has in many ways nothing at all to do with Morecambe, but in other ways has everything to do with Morecambe. Just substitute the Zetland for the Midland. I need to start thinking about individual city itineraries. I have a list of places and things to do in a hotch potch notebook. I started with my first destination Hong Kong and I was amazed how hard it is going to be to fit all I want to do. I need to make some sacrifices. The sun never did shine in Bradford on Sea, but then that was probably too much to hope for in mid-January. The wide sweep of Morecambe Bay remained shrouded in low cloud and cold temperatures for the duration, but the welcome was warm. The statue of Eric looks out over the town from the seafront - perhaps keeping an eye out on the Wetherspoons named after him in the town centre. The Bay found favour in Victorian times with: “a temperature of the mildest, a death rate of the lowest, a noble bay within easy reach of the Lake Country, with air pure and bracing, a low number of bacteria per litre of water, a proportionately high oxygen count in the air and an absence of fog” The Bay is still noble and within easy reach ... read more
