Days 13, 14 and 15 - A Driving Tour of (part of) Kent When planning our summer, everyone had some ideas of what they wanted to do. One area that appealed to everyone was the Southeast area of England. Tony put together a general list of places to visit and we set off by train on Saturday to Ashford to rent a car. Much easier than renting in London and trying to drive out. Our first stop was the sound mirrors near New Romney. They were used during WWI to track aircraft flying over the channel from France. They were the preceding technology to RADAR and were pretty successful while they were being used. The access to the site is only open two days a year and we happened to be able to catch one. Well arrived at Heathrow eventually.....never with Qatar again...rocked up to Tullamarine 8.00pm for our 1030pm flight to be told it will not be leaving until 1.00a.m. Anyway staked out a new bar and had a few beers whilst waiting...nearly 14hrs to Doha and then another 7 1/2 to Heathrow, collected our hire car a little Jazz and off to Faversham. Very tired but thought the 1hr 20 min drive would be OK but as soon as we hit the freeway...stop start stop start....2hr15min later arrived in Faversham, a very cute English town where Eloise and Dean live with their littly Dylan, also Bob Geldof. Booked into our AirBNB which is a lovely old home walking distance to El and Dean's....El had a beautiful home cooked meal ready for us and it was great to catch up ... read more

This morning, our group took a coach bus from our hotel to Dover. My only knowledge of Dover was that I'd heard the phrase "cliffs of Dover" before. I didn't know what else to expect. Sure enough, when we arrived from our two hour ride, we found a small town nestled against some white cliffs. It was charming. Our coach pulled into a large parking lot that was separated from the town by a small highway. A group of students went down to the water and started to splash around (even though it was quite chilly out). It was colder but beautiful near the water. A few of us walked over to check out a map. It seemed everyone was going to head to the cliffs. I wanted to use the restroom before hiking, so I ... read more

D Day minus 15 Every day brings us closer to departure day. With each day that passes the butterflies turn to elephants in my stomach as I realise I have much to do and I feel I won’t get them done before we leave the UK for the last holiday of the year. The heating is coming on in the morning showing us that Autumn has well and truly arrived. Strangely this holiday is less organised than normal. Yes I have been for some feet pampering, I have had my hair cut in readiness to go on holiday but I feel that much has been neglected . I swear we were more organised the first year we went away in Suzy than we are today. 14 days and work , 13 days the Duvalays are washed, ... read more

And then England ….ah England, we just can’t do a trip to Europe without visiting home, land of my birth and spiritual home for Rhys. Having done justice to most of the usual holiday spots we decided to have a week in Kent, always a popular holiday destination for the British but not so much for overseas tourists – too close to London maybe. We were prepared for an English ‘summer’, expecting to wear gear brought for Iceland, but this year southern England put on a display of summer weather that would be hard for NZ to rival. During a week in Kent and five days in London we only had showers on our last afternoon. I got sunburnt in Brighton after weeks in the southern Italian sun. Kent glowed with yellow corn fields and tunnels ... read more

Hi Travel followers. We have been very slack in regard to our Travel Blog (where does the time go) and hence have decided to join a few together in an attempt to catch up to where we are at the moment. So much has been happening it is hard to fit it all in. From Cradley we moved on to our 5th house sit at Wellington, but on the way we stopped in at Bath to check out some of the sights. We must also say our house sit at Tracebridge was absolutely beautiful and was first built in the 10th century as a Roman "barn" but has had a number of renovations every few hundred years to a saw mill and then to a house around the 1700's. The pets/animals we are also caring for ... read more

At breakfast we join the other guests who are staying in this country retreat for a variety of reasons. Some are here for a weekend of golf, others just passing through, and there is the bride with her entourage of bridesmaids for that special day. It looks as though it will be a grand day for everyone. The sun is shining and the temperature is quite pleasant. We drive back to Canterbury, park in our favourite car park, take the bus to the city centre and walk to the cathedral. Gone are most of the market stalls, the streets are still busy, and shoppers are looking for the last summer sale bargains. Tour groups have arrived for their visit to the cathedral. We pay our entrance fee and start our special tour. We are welcomed by ... read more

The new chapter on our adventure starts with a pleasant breakfast. We stayed in this hotel two years ago and found it a great starting point for our journey to the Euro Tunnel terminal about thirty minutes drive away. We have plenty of time. Already we are thirty minutes ahead of schedule. Once in the United Kingdom we plan to visit Canterbury Cathedral and then drive on to our accommodation near Maidstone. All sounds rather simple and well planned. But how plans can change. After leaving the hotel Jane takes us through the local village towards the motorway entrance. Today is Bastille Day and it is too early for the celebrations to begin. Perhaps everyone is still in bed after last night’s carnival outing. We decide to use the toll road because it is cheap, quick, ... read more

The campsite in Orchamp was expensive for what it was. It had the bear essentials, like showers, loos and fresh water, but was quite run down. But this was irrelevant, as it sits on the Euro Velo 6 cycle route that will take me straight into Dole. I set off at about 9:30 as it was about an hours ride into town, and the heat was already sweating me out. I had moved the bike into the shade of the van to clean the chain, as after the wet ride in Germany the gear set was pretty clogged up. But even here the heat was building, so I made a start along the cycle route. It runs along side a large canal with a couple of locks along it, with trees and cliffs to make this ... read more
