Flight from Berlin 7.00am all on time 2hr flight to London arriving at 8.00am, then to car hire, got our KIA sportage and onto Faversham. Our houseowner where we rented for 4 days was OK with us coming early morning so we arrived around 10.45 and then had the washing machine whirring for the next few hours, did some supermarketing for drinks and snacks, then ironed everything. Faversham is quite unique not only as an ancient market town but as an English area with their huge hop growing fields and those gorgeous oast houses that they used to dry the hops. Even our care hire man commented on how gorgeous he thought Kent was with their oast houses. El and Dean asked us around for a wine and cheese night at their home Thursday night, Luke ... read more

And we are off. Off to Switzerland, via France for a few days, for most of September. We’ve been pretty well occupied throughout July and August since our June trip to France. The garden has been looking absolutely splendid, helped by a lot of glorious weather and no battering of heavy wind and rain. The almost drought conditions of August have left it a bit dry in places but we have had no hosepipe ban and in fact have had some rain where lots of England has not. Gentle soft rain, the sort the flowers love. We’ve survived the British Heatwave which was supposedly going to kill tens of thousands as we’ve survived the Covid pandemic (so far at least and not surprising as we have both managed (touching wood) not to catch it 😊). I’ve ... read more

A town and major ferry port in Kent in southeast England, Dover faces France across the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel, just 21 miles from Cap Gris Nez. Immortalized in books, movies, and songs (remember Vera Lynn?) over the years, the White Cliffs of Dover is the region of English coastline facing the Strait. The cliff face reaches a height of 350’ and owes its striking appearance to its composition of chalk, accented by streaks of black flint, deposited during the late Cretaceous period. The cliffs on both sides of the town stretch for 8 miles, and a section of coastline encompassing the cliffs was purchased by the National Trust in 2016. At this point, Britain is closest to continental Europe, and on a clear day (yes, they do get these ... read more

I gambled that the rail strIke would have enough trains running so that I could get to London and then on to Canterbury. The underground in London was the biggest challenge with closed or severely delayed trains. There is a high speed train from St Pancras that gets you to Canterbury in an hour but you do not see much charming landscape. I guess it’s a good thing for a day trip like today. There were less crowds on Canterbury’s high street, at least until three when school children were released from school. There were a lot less groups of international students than the last time I was here. I went to the historic restaurant on the river, my usual place for lunch. The building is so old that I have to duck under the dark ... read more

So looking forward to this trip. Our last summer motorhome holiday was 4 years ago June 2018. That was followed by a new knee op which cancelled the annual September trip, A year off while Bob got his heart sorted then 2020/2021 well Covid of course. We did have our trip to Spain via France in Feb / March but our main memories of that are Rain. Certainly not the winter sunshine break we had anticipated and doubt we would bother repeating it. Such a long way to go to find bad weather and we decided when we got back that we far prefer France to Spain, having spent one week of the trip travelling through France to get to Spain and back. France is easier, more familair, I speak the language so any future winter ... read more

I am not sure it is possible to see everything of interest in London. We skipped the art museums, the Shakespeare and Dickens and Sherlock Holmes sites, and many other worthwhile attractions. But we did feel we had at least picked the low-hanging fruit, and so on Monday morning we went out to Heathrow, rented our car, and drove off to tour southern England. Our first stop was to be Chartwell, Winston Churchill's home for over 40 years, from his purchase of the estate in 1922 until just shortly before his death in 1965. Churchill is a personal favorite. His History of the English-Speaking Peoples is masterful. He covers the American Civil War in a single chapter, and it is the best description of the conflict I have ever read. His prose is luminous, and in ... read more

Dear All Greetings! I thought I'd write a blog entry about a lovely day trip I did from London. I had not long arrived home after an amazing trip to New England USA, when my travel feet continued to itch and I was ready to do a bit more exploring again. This time I planned a little trip I'd been thinking about for a while now, ever since I watched the film "Pocahontas" when it came out in the 1990s really, but my plans developed more recently to include some really quite lovely places nearby. It was a Saturday trip on a Bank Holiday weekend to take in the lovely town of Gravesend on the southern bank of the River Thames in Kent, and then a short ferry ride just across the River Thames onto its ... read more

I’ve been on this boat for 4 hours and we’ve not gone anywhere yet. Apparently we are waiting for crew to get here from Heathrow, but it’s a lovely warm evening and I’m sat on deck supping a Tiger beer with my hubby, enjoying the view of the white cliffs of Dover. People who know us were very surprised that we chose to go on a cruise; we usually do everything on the cheap and never relaxed! However, I really wanted to go to Svalbard (which is half way between the top of Norway and the North Pole). Flying there would mean 3 flights: to Oslo, to Trømso and finally to Svalbard. It would take longer to get there and back than the amount of days you could afford to stay because it’s Norwegian and Norway ... read more

Hiking from Canterbury to Dover This year we decided to take the first week of our vacation to go on a hike. The trail we chose is an ancient pilgrim route called Via Francigena. The route goes from Canterbury in England to Rome in Italy. We have no intension of walking all of it. We don't have the time. Walking all of it would take maybe three months. But also, it wouldn't be fun. We enjoy hiking but one week is quite enough for us. More than that and it would turn into a project and that is not what we are after. We began the hike in Canterbury. Before we went there we only knew of two things about that city: 1 it has a cathedral 2 there is a book named the Canterbury Tales ... read more

It was dark when we woke. We could see nothing through the sky light. The camp site was quiet as the grave. Well it was 5.30 in the morning. The alarm had woken us up and we were ready for our last breakfast in France. I do the last minute jobs in Gabby. I swung the captains seats round, I pulled the blinds down and let what little light there was in. Glenn went out and unplugged the electric and then we were on our way. We like Guines. It is one of those campsites that we can get out of early. I frightened Glenn to death when I thought that the gates were shut. They were open so we headed off for the train. The journey for the tunnel was uneventful and I vowed to ... read more
