You don't turn seventy every year, thank goodness, and really we could have done without it this year, but time is of the essence and our essence this year is ageing. A slightly musty, musky scent with a hint of nostalgia. Our daughters thought to remind us of what it was like to be young and lively in the 70s and planned an extravaganza with friends and family gathering at the party house in St Albans. The request was for 70s attire and the result was hilarious, Graeme and I providing most of the hilarity if truth be told. It was so lovely that my oldest and dearest school friend made the journey from Peterborough. The daughter of another old friend made it down from Edinburgh! One daughter and husband flew from Lisbon especially, and although ... read more

St Albans July 8 - 17 Our next stop in the UK was St. Albans as we had organized to cat sit for a couple that had two cats, Georges and Leon. We traveled there from Cardiff by train, the first leg was 1st Class which was a great way to start the day with the delivery of beverages and snacks. The rest of the trip was via subway which went seamlessly as well. We sure are enjoying the ability to use public transportation for our travels while here. I hadn’t mentioned in the last blog posting, but Bob started to have lots of pain in his neck and shoulder while in Cardiff. The Airbnb we were staying at had a listing with a couple of Dr. offices so called and found out that as we ... read more

Having heard about historic cathedral in St Albans, we decided to visit there on 3 October. Mark took a day off on that day. St Albans is 19 miles (31km) northwest of London and is a large town within the London commuter belt. The Thameslink serves frequent services, both express and local, calling at major stations. We took the Thameslink service from St Pancras station – it was just 20 minutes journey to the destination. After leaving the station and crossing over the railway bridge, we found Victoria Street which would lead to the town centre. We were going to pop in the tourist information centre, but the town hall’s building was which housed the tourist information centre was under the building work – and Mark found the tourist information centre has moved somewhere in the ... read more

Dear all, Please forgive late start-up with our new blog but the internet has been down in a large part of the neighbourhood where we are staying, however here we are finally, back online tonight! So starting from the beginning....... Monday 30th April Departure Day......at last!!! Russell managed to get packed just in time for a 12.00 noon departure...there's always something else to do. Lately it's been to make sure everything was right so that, from his phone or the computer, he could watch the burglers running through the house from overseas!! We decided it was definitely worth a few dollars to have a special check in counter and then a special boarding lane to take us upstairs to our Premium Economy section of the plane.....then some nice personal attention throughout the flight. Just keep working ... read more

Ash Wednesday--The First Day of Lent 2009 Sarah Ban Breathnach is the author of Simple Abundance, a book about the power of gratitude. She advises us all to start keep a "gratitude journal" in which we list five things we are thankful for every day. When you feel grateful for the good things in your life, you open yourself up to receiving more good things. It's the Law of Attraction: you attract people and situations to yourself, based on your thoughts and feelings. Gratitude is the most powerful feeling for drawing in good things. So here are five things I am grateful for today: 1) I managed to come up with a good lesson plan for my foundations class. 2) Ailsa agreed to be a reference for my job search. 3) I had the time and ... read more

I'm always surprised by how much I love London. Every time I'm there, its energy overtakes me, and I never want to leave. I'll never get sick of London. I've got to find a way to live there! Find a job, find an apartment, and live there for a year or more (if I like it enough). But when would I do the Peace Corps? That's something I know I must do in my life. I want to serve in a developing country and learn another language and how to live off the land. But when would I go to graduate school? Higher education in the US is so expensive; I might just go to school in London or another country where it's cheaper. My eyes hurt. I'm tired. It's late, but I can't sleep. I ... read more
