I know I have not written in a while. I have been traveling and recovering from traveling. On my last day in Slovenia we went to see a cave and went to this really cool castle that was built into this huge rock. I will post pics later today. I left Slovenia and took a train to Zagreb, Croatia to catch a plane to Cologne. This all seems easy however I forgot about border controls because Croatia is on the border of the EU, this was just annoying. The other issue was when I got Zagreb, I had to get to the airport from the train station. This was quite an ordeal because I had to take a tram and then a bus to the airport, however the frustrating part was that I spoke no Croatian....so ... read more

Sunday 1st Super-early train to Winchester, but Mary gives me a lift - she’s an early bird anyway! Something up with the trains so end up getting an earlier one, and arrive in time to catch the last half-hour of church and sit next to Kate & Jon (thankfully she’s still pregnant and not had the baby yet as otherwise might not have got a chance to see them!). We head down to the Buttercross after chatting to a few people at church, and meet up with Amanda and Karen in the Slug and Lettuce for a nice lunch, and a very nice pudding! Amanda’s in the middle of exams and Karen is off to Tango, so chat to Kate & Jon for a while as we meander back to the car, and they drop me ... read more

I arrived in Winchester two weeks ago and I am loving every bit of it. I have met many people from the University along with people around the US who chose to go to school at Winchester as well. Every Monday night I go to a Christian Group called CU with a couple of my friends from Eau Claire. By doing this we have met a lot of British people and have hung out with them a lot. These first couple of weeks have been a lot of fun wandering around Winchester, it is a very beautiful town. Last Thursday I and three others, one from Eau Claire and two from Missouri went to Bath, England. We got there via train and spent the whole day wandering around seeing all of the tourist sights. Bath is ... read more

10 HOURS TILL I FLY! So excited but feel a bit sick (malaria tablets?), a bit tired (no sleep interrupted by strange dreams last night..) and a bit buzzy (lots of diet coke). This morning over breakfast we tried to remember as many childrens games and activites as we could. So far we've got: 1) what time is it Mr Fox? (is that right??) 2) you're it/tag 3) singing 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and TOWES' 4) 'four wheels on my wagon..' - my favourite!! So if anyone can think of anything else then pleeeease let me know! ... read more

When we visited Salisbury cathedral it was pouring rain and the building seemed dark and gloomy. Therefore, our appreciation of that remarkable building was somewhat diminished. Not so with Winchester Cathedral. The day we visited was sunny and warm. The drive was pleasant. We found a parking place fairly easily as we had chosen a weekend when no big art, food or music event was taking place there. As we approached the cathedral the song, "Winchester Cathedral" kept going through my head. You know the one. The lyrics go: "Winchester Cathedral You're bringing me down You stood and you watched as My baby left town You could have done something But you didn't try You didn't do nothing You let her walk by Now everyone knows just how much I needed that gal She wouldn't have ... read more

In all the years I have lived in Winchester, I’ve never really made an effort to go to the Hat Fair, but this time I was there at the right time, so we went in on Saturday, meeting Paula over a Cornish Pasty. Plenty going on in the city centre, and, it’s classic, I stand still for 5 minutes (this was literally) and run into 5 people I know, and keep bumping into people as I move around… I love Winchester! Got to see a Unicyclist, the vegetable-baby man and the long-neck Inspector Gadget types to name but a few. After a quick dash into Sainsbury’s we headed to Kate’s for her birthday BBQ, which was fun, relaxing, and I wasn’t driving. Karen and I then relaxed back at the flat, watching junk TV and drinking ... read more

Another brief stop-over in Winchester, catching up with Karen, re-reading Harry Potter, going onto Campus to enable downloading of all my emails! Caught up with Helen, and went round to Jon & Kate’s for dinner - lovely - it was hard work, we were experimented on with chocolate meringue… I’ll take that kind of experimentation any day! Into town to pick up some more travel bits and pieces, then out to Jeanette’s for a BBQ, which was relaxing, fun, and a chance to catch up with people! Off to the Hitchens late Friday evening, ready for a 7am wake-up for a holiday in France - somewhere, I don’t know where, I’m assuming somewhere near Le Havre so we can go from Portsmouth! ... read more

Just another week in England... Three major events marked the last week for me: a fire in Alwyn Hall, the university's Summer Ball, and a trip to Southampton to see the the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga. Other than that, it's been rainy and cold and I haven't had much reason to go out or even leave my room, for that matter, since I have essays to write and a trip to plan. Only one more week until my mom gets here!!! Early hours of Thursday, May 24 -- The Great Alwyn Fire OK, so it wasn't really "great," but the small electrical fire caused a great deal of excitment and inconvenience in my dorm on Wednesday night. I had just crawled into bed around 2 a.m. after enjoying a night ... read more
