Its 2 days before we begin our adventure and we both are a mixed bag of emotions; shocked, overwhelmed, nervous and excited all at the same time. This is something that we both have wanted for a long time and we never knew whether this would remain a dream or actually become reality. But here we are, all packed and ready to go.
We have had to quit our jobs, pack up sell our house, move to C’s mum house, finalise bills, sell the car (as of yesterday) and in general tie up most loose ends. You don’t realise how many things you accumulate over years and fail to let go of until you really do have to downsize to a couple of boxes. But we’ve done it!.
It has taken a lot to get here but is it worth it? People ask us. Although we’ve not left yet so we cannot answer this fully, I can only say we now have the opportunity of a lifetime to travel the world. For us backpacking and travelling enables us to experience new cultures, experience new ways of living, offers us the opportunity to see some amazing natural and man-made wonders
and allows us to live a slow simple life. We like a place we stay, we dislike it we move on.
Another question people ask us is where do you start with a trip like that?. Although we would like to say, just jumping at the chance, for us it has taken a lot of planning. Researching things to do and see in each of the countries, reading numerous webpages, well informative blogs (which have led us here to do the same thing) and watching the many YouTube videos. This was mainly the fun part, talking to each other about all the amazing places we have researched/found and would like to visit. Without this we never would have dared to add Burma, Japan, China etc on our lists of places to go.
The more difficult planning stages were deciding on travel budgets for each place/for a year, whether we fly as we go or get a RTW (round the world) ticket, finding insurance that really covers you, and the constant packing and repacking some more.
Japan is our first stop and we will be spending 2 weeks there, then we head to Burma aka Myanmar although we
need to stop in Bangkok for quick one to pick up our Burmese visas. So far, Flights are booked to Japan, Bangkok and Burma and from there we hope to travel more of south east asia. Although there is no rigid plan we aim to go to;
some amazing waterfalls and laid back towns of Laos, get lost in translation in China, avoid being scammed in Vietnam, marvel at the beauty of Halong Bay, experience some great food and culture in Malaysia, beach bum in the Philippines and feel inspired at the stunning monuments and temples like Borobudur in Indonesia. Did I mention get a good tan, well that’s for P more so than C .
From here the plan is to travel some of the Americas, but for now that’s way off. For now, next stop Japan!
