It's now less than 7 days until we set off - and I'm getting pretty excited! All of of the travel tickets have arrived, the hotels are booked and I've bought all of the travelling gear I'll need (hopefully). I've also had some of the recommended vaccinations for such a trip - Hepatitus A, Typoid, diptheria and polio were available for free on the NHS and I just booked an appointment with a nurse to receive these. There were a number of other recommended vaccines that could be paid for at the local travel clinic but I only opted for Tick Bourne Encephalitis - a nasty disease that causes brain swelling and in endemic is Siberia in the summer months. Some guide books also recommend Japanese Type B Encephalitis (spread by mosquitos) but this is not ... read more

Limbo is the word right now. I have just spent the last few hours debating whether I have everything - then I realised I can never pack for every eventuality. Although, I only have a few items and a list of places I would like to go to, I feel ready to leave (especially when I am looking out onto my miserable garden, and my neighbours washing that has been hung out for 3 days in the rain). Then I hear about a supposed heatwave next week - typical. ... read more

It's the start of the World Cup in South Africa today and 3 days until the start of our world adventure..uh oh!!! It's been the most random couple of weeks, full of packing and leaving drinks. The leaving doo at the Bridge went well, it was really good to see everyone and a nice excuse to get everyone together. We finished drinking at about 7am, so the next day of packing was a struggle (ie. it didn't happen!). This week we hired a van to take the bulk of our stuff to Preston and Telford and we celebrated Clio Birthday with her family. The flat is really bare and echo-ey which feels very strange. Clio's done a dry run, packing her backpack and it's huge...good luck with that! The final farewell drinks are taking place tonight ... read more

After visiting relatives in Bristol and Scotland for the last couple of weeks we've spent the last few days’ frantically packing up our flat. Our lives were successfully packed away into just 21 boxes! We were quite strict with ourselves regarding what we actually needed to take and what we should leave behind. It's amazing how much stuff you collect even over just a few years! Once the boxes had been collected by the shipping company we were able to relax a bit and get on with the important task of preparing for the "everything must go party". The theme of the party being to encourage our friends to drink all our remaining alcohol and take away some of the items we weren't shipping. There was an eclectic selection of items, most of which got snapped ... read more

Now that everyone know's the 'big secret' I thought I'd step up a gear with the blogs. We've finally worked out a full rough route for our journey using the various literary resources pictured on this blog. Since the last blog we've booked our visas for Australia (135 quid!!!!) and USA and worked out how many Malaria tablets we'll need for the South East Asia leg of the journey - who would've though health care would be so expensive! We've even booked a pub for our leaving doo (I wanted to charge everyone £2 each to get in but Clio thought that people might take it the wrong way!) So, we're officially on coutdown and making sure we haven't left any loose ends... by the way if anyone in the Didsbury wants to buy a decent ... read more

After much planning we've now finally decided on the route we want to take. The main thing we've always wanted to do is take the Trans Mongolian railway from St. Petersberg to Beijing, stoping off at a couple of places in Russia and Mongolia along the way. Before that we head through Germany, Denmark and Scandinavia and then afterwards we go down through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Sumatra. To get from Singapore to Perth we're hopefully going as passengers on a container ship and then once in perth it's a 3 day train journey across to Sydney. Currently in the process of sorting out all of our visas, booking European trains & ferries and getting our travel injections done. We've also just started packing up the flat, deciding what gets shipped and what gets thrown away. ... read more

Happy Paddy's Day!! I thought I'd take this opportunity to test out the travel blog! It's 2 weeks until we hand our notice and the stress is beginning to get to us! Even though we've planned most of our trip, bought our flights, booked cars, boats, busses, hostels and invested in some rather sexy backpacks...everyone at work is still none the wiser. Looking forward to letting the massive hairy cat out of the bag! Anyhoo, it's all very excting and we're counting down the days now. I'll probably stick another update on in few weeks time when we attempt to do a car boot sale... read more

I went away in 2007 for 8 months. Saying goodbye was an odd affair; goodbye for so long but not forever. The worst goodbye was my parents. I'd already said farewll to my Big Brother when we dropped him off and it was such a mad and confusing affair that goodbye was pretty quick and pretty uneventful. Saying goodbye to my Mum and Dad, while they waved from the doorway to the Departures lounge was the hardest bit. I kept back the tears that threatened to topple over my lids often for the next 48 hours or so. The first couple of days were the worst; the flights; the new country; new smells; new sounds. I held it, refusing to give in to that place of lonliness and I held it in for several months, until ... read more

SO......we have three weeks to go and loads and loads of things still to buy and organise so we are expecting our hard earned savings to deplete somewhat over the next 21 days in the run up to our departure. Still ... woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo only two and a half weeks of work to go, thats about 13 actual work days and then we are off into the unkown for 6 months of adventure. Who knows what will happen, but here's the plan for reference: 28th July Fly Manchester to Kaual Lumpur and stay the night. 29th July Fly Kuala Lumpur to Palembang/Sumatra/Indonesia and begin our travels. Following on from that our plan is to: Stay a month and work our way up Sumatra, then meet Elli's chum Suze in Koh Samui or Bangkok, then a month travelling ... read more
