Wow! What a glorious day ... the sun was shining, a slight breeze was blowing, and the sky was a deep blue. I had a fantastic day. I wandered through the city and stumbled upon Buckingham Palace (amazingly, if you could even say that!). In preparation for the Olympic torch's passing through England, the Mall leading up to the palace was lined with large British Flags. It will certainly be an amazing ceremony ... they're beginning to barracade large parts of the area already. I strolled down the Mall towards Trafalagar. As I reached the square, I saw hordes of people in the Square, shading themselves and cooling down in the fountains. I thought, what an idea! So, I joined them. I crawled onto one of the ledges and put my feet in the water. How refreshing! ... read more

Today, I attended a production of "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Globe Theatre on the South Bank of the Thames. The company was all women, which left much to interpretation. In fact, I had a very good seat ... or stand. I was one of the many groundlings that watch the performance from a paved area that surrounds the stage. Even better, it cost me a mere £5 ... yeah! I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Afterwards, I wandered along the Thames to take in the extraordinarily sunny, warm weather. It was fantastic! I stopped for an Italian ice cream and resumed my stroll. Thereafter, I stumbled upon a festival dedicated to refugees in London. The air thick with the smell of ethnic cuisines buzzed with energy. Revelers lounged on grassy patches and listened to music from ... read more

After another good night's sleep, I awoke and had lunch with Caroline's parents after which they took me to Dover to see St. Margaret's at the Cliffe. I had only about a half hour to make it to my 3:15 train, but we made the trip to see the cliffs. Boy, am I glad we did. St. Margaret's at the Cliffe was glorious. The combination of the white cliffs and various hues of blue of the water and sky were quite breathtaking. Lucienne and Nicolas dropped me at the railway station and I took a long train ride into London. (The train kept stopping and making loud, rumbling noises ... not sure why.) I met Caroline at her lab and she took me to The Anchor on the Thames for drinks. About 10-15 people from her ... read more

Just a couple of weeks work of work now left before we jet out to Oz, currently sitting in work at the ICA having finished a shift! A well earned beer in hand. Today we found out that the hotel we had reservations for in Tokyo is booked up. We've put a hold on another hotel, but it will be Wednesday before we know if we've got it, and furthermore Kate has discovered that that weekend is a national festival: 'Marine Week' or something!!  The Tokyo thing is looking a little tentative. Still we're both very excited and buying lots of travel gadgets to make the whole thing nice and comfortable!! Keep reading, it will get more interesting! Chris... read more

I have travelled the whole world, but I hadn't been to London before now; and as Samuel Johnson famously said: When you are bored of London, you are bored of life. I couldn't agree more! London is quite simply a capital city par excellence... it has more than you could possibly imagine. Words are failing me... I can only say: go visit London!... read more

Hells Bells, there just never seems to be time for most things anymore. I can remember days in Zim when I was bored and had time to spare in the evenings and weekends. That sure has gone by the wayside. So anyway, that is the reason for my generic letter to so many of you at the same time, please forgive me!!! Well, lets see.... Life, finally, seems to be settling down into a manageable morass of do and don't. Having gotten shot of the shitty job, have settled very nicely into the recruiting world and getting to grips with that. Infact, the bosses have now decided that I need to be promoted off administration and into recruiting and mentoring fully. Now, not that I was too keen on it at first, kinda liked the even ... read more

Hi All, Dithering about at present, making final preparations for downsizing from living in a normal sized house to living out of a moderate sized rucksack before taking the plunge and buying that NZ ticket.  Obviously it can be done, as people do it all the time, but what I had thought of as a realistic - restrained even - payload now seems excessive without the aid of a Sherpa!  Since that's one thing I definitely won't be taking, it's time to rip the unnecessary filaments out of my toothbrush, remove those heavy and needless 'x' and 'z' pages from the address book, and think long and hard about the possibility of travelling without my own tenpin bowling ball..... Still hoping to be off and travelling within a couple of weeks, but this story must surely ... read more

I am here in London and it is just as expensive and smelly as I remember and yet I always have a good time when I am here!! Anyways, I went to the big tour leader interview yesterday and it was pretty stressful - lots of role play etc and I have no idea how it went. I can't tell if it went well or absoltely horribly .. . hopefully they'll give me a call to let me know that the job is mine!! I'm heading back to York tonight and it's back to reality --- gotta find a job somewhere in the countryside to save tons of money and then who knows? I have a few leads but am very tight on the cash front so hopefully I'll be able to get something quickly and ... read more

Well, I made my flight on time.  They have super cheap flights within Europe here but you have to be up at the right time to get them.  My flight took off at 6:15 and I was in Rome by 10:00.  Today is the day I meet up with the rest of the class so it will be nice to see a freindly face for a change - little did I know some of those faces would not be friendly.  The cab driver got a very big tip.  7.00 €.  He suddenly did not understand english when I got out of the cab.  It is very itimidating knowing you are in a country where you do not speak the langauge.  But I met up with everyone.  In an hours time we meet up with everyone at ... read more

Hi All, Well the title for today came from one of the nice people in Westminster Abbey. But before I get to that here is what I did today. I rook my stuff (big giant backpack - 6800 cubic inches not including the baby one that zips on - to Victoria Bus Station. It was really not so bad, once you get the waiste buckle done you are all good. 10:30 in the evening did not come fast enough. It felt like forever. But it did come and then the night, the long long night bus ride to Edinbough. The smelly drunk behind me - you know every drunck has that stale alcohol oder to them that gets worse as the night goes on. You pray he quites talking so his foul order he calls breath ... read more
