We had another matinee at the theatre today, but we had the morning free, so we took the Tube to the Imperial War Museum.
I am constantly amazed at the efficiency of the London public transportation system. We have used the Tube every day, multiple times to get all over town and we have never waited longer than 2 minutes for a train. They run constantly. I don't know how they manage it, but it is the best transportation system I have ever seen.
Plus, the characters that ride the Tube are highly entertaining. This morning this young woman sitting directly across from us was dressed very nice in a skirt and blouse, cute purse, looked very professional and conservative and she proceeded to roll her own cigarette (i assume it was tobacco) while bouncing along on the train.
Also, on the way to the Tube this morning we stopped at the Post Office to buy a stamp and mail a postcard and we realized that there is a language barrier even in London. 48% of residents in London are from other countries. The nice young man who waited on me had a bit of an accent. He sold me my
stamp and I licked it an put it on the postcard. Then he handed me an "Airmail" stamp and I licked it and put it on the Postcard. he was trying to tell me something but I wasn't getting it. I think he was saying Self Adhesive. He finally pointed to the Airmail sticker and said very slowly - self adhesive. Then Dot translated. It sure seemed like the licking had done the trick, but I peeled it off, pulled the self-adhesive sticker off the back and stuck it to the stupid postcard. Never again.
Similar thing happened yesterday. We popped into a little pizza cafe for a slice and I saw a fountain coke machine and a big sign said "FREE REFILLS ALL DAY". Those who know me well can imagine my excitement - I could finally get 1/2 diet and 1/2 regular and get refills!!! Never seen before in Europe. Hopefully you saw my picture yesterday that illustrated the size of the glasses they use here. I was starting to drool. We sat down and the waitress came over. I ordered my half and half and she had absolutely no clue. I finally just ordered a Coke with ice,
Dot with the Big Gun
In 1914 this 15 inch gun was used on Royal Navy Battleships. It could fire a shell 16 miles. still excited about the fountain. She brought me a can of Coke. Still don't know if the fountain was broke, or if I ordered wrong. Language barrier.
But, back to the Imperial War Museum. It is free - Yay and it housed in the old Bellevue Hospital Building (Insane Asylum). We had been there before but barely made a dent in it. We went through the World War I section which was very interesting. Great educational material. We had lunch there - they have an excellent restaurant. I have a few pictures below. And when we left - the ice cream truck was there again. Soft-serve vanilla - extra creamy and vanilla-ey.
This afternoon we saw The Girls - a musical version of Calendar Girls. Small theatre, excellent seats. It was hilarious. The rest of the audience loved it even more than we did, because the language barrier struck again. We didn't get several jokes. There was no soundtrack recording yet so we couldn't do our homework. But.. it was still very good. The old ladies really did get naked - very quickly, but they did it and the audience loved it an supported them. I think the bulk of
the audience was about the age of the actresses.
After the theatre I was ready for some real English Pub Food, so we went to Chandos in the theatre district, a Rick recommendation and I finally got my good old fish and chips. it was excellent.
Tomorrow morning we leave London early for a flight to Toulouse, France. We'll pick up our car and head for the walled city of Carcassonne. New adventures. Driving - eeck.
London was 60 degrees and sunny for our entire stay. Not a drop of rain. A record.
