Besides the obvious, the name of my travel blog was inspired by a film.
What we did on our holiday, is a Billy Connelly film recommended recently by a friend (thanks Barbara) and is a couple of hours of laughter, love and perspective in true Connelly fashion. A true feel good film despite the sadness of losing a loved one, so if you fancy a laugh, a cry and an appreciation of all your family idiosyncrasies, this is one for you. The film was made all the more enjoyable by watching it with Lewis Charlie and Skye - first family film night in years!
Holidays often trigger the philosophical discussions about the meaning of life and the slower pace provides opportunity to capture some of that fun, love and perspective. I have often talked of writing a travel blog but too often have put it off so inspiration and motivation was what I needed.
My second inspiration was influenced by a colleague (Rebecca) now living in Oz who gave us a truly engaging and creative commentry of her travels and escapades. I doubt I can match her standard but nonetheless I just need enough to look back on
when we are old and grey - that's now then!
So here goes, my first attempt to capture the holiday memory bank!
It started with a text that gave me butterflies in my tummy, it read Etihad chauffer service pick up confirmation! The butterflies were a mixture of excitement and anxiety - obviously excited for an impending holiday and the anticipation of seeing Melissa again but anxious if I would get everything done in time. I had planned to take a week off work to do the Christmas gift shopping, clean my house from top to bottom and get organised for this trip but it just hadn't happened. Instead I was running around like a blue a fly and my brain was jumping around like magic beans. Focus Debbie, focus - a list, that is what is needed! I have categories for work, house, shopping, tax return and Martin but what I really need is a category to unwind the highly sprung coil that is evidently wound up inside of me.
Saviour comes in the form of Syke, would you mind having her tonight Mum as we have Charlie's brother's birthday party to go to? The items
on the list lose their priority and I now have sub categories, 'must do' and 'nice to do' and of course, we would love to have her, after all we will not see her for a month and we don't go until Sun, there's always tomorrow! And so it was, a night in with Skye, Martin out on a stag night with a promise to head home early! The next morning, Skye has moved from her carrycot to our bed and is beaming with smiles. Such a good and happy baby but she is only 3 months old, will she remember us when we get back?
The holiday returns back into focus with a message from Melissa, don't forget to take loads of photos before you get here and make sure you get the limo and the business class plane seats to show me and tell me all about it. We should get the limo guy to hold the wedding card for Faye and Joey says Martin who has bought a card to take on our travels - we will be missing the wedding but he plans to be there in spirit and bring back a series of photo
shots with said card!
Now if I were supercool, I'd pretend we travelled Business Class all the time but I'm far too excited for that. This is our first time and where better to capture it than my very own travel blog?! This has to be up there in terms of bucket list experiences, after all even David (Yvonne's Dad) hasn't done business class yet despite Martin being convinced that it was him who persuaded us to take the plunge. Of course, I know I have Amanda to thank for that. Having travelled to India without him earlier this year, he was repeating his objections to long haul travel until that is Amanda told him what was included in business class travel. Suddenly his head was turned and he was hooked. He has researched seat guru, plane models and compared airlines for customer reviews so neither of us are cool about this experience.
It starts at 5.30am, the chauffer arrives an we're off, next stop Heathrow! Fast tracking security to the Etihard business lounge for the customary holiday breakfast of smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and of course prosecco for me and bacon and eggs for Martin, only this
time breakfast is followed by a complimentary spa treatment, facial for me and back massage for Martin. This is fab and we should be sharing this experience, Chris and Jane , where are you?
Next stop Abu Dhabi.
