The Notting Hill Carnival, which is Europe's biggest street festival taking place in London since 1966, have people drinking and enjoying in one of the best summer weeks ever: first and foremost, sound systems entertaining crowds, as well as a great deal of elaborate floats displaying Caribbean colours take over the shy sunny west London while amazing performers wind their way through extremely bustling streets and millions of people managing to cram into very small areas, that's something of a challenge, right? As a result, in the weeks leading up to the August bank holiday, in London, you can't help but smiling at the array of happy dancers, artists and musicians, who highly contribute to such a melting pot announcing that wherever you go, you can't escape the unmistakable signs of carnival. If you ask me, I would say it is the biggest symbol of joy London possesses, not to be ignored, that is.
El Carnaval de Notting Hill, conocido como el más grande festival de calle en Europa desde 1966, pone a la gente a beber y a disfrutar una de las mejores semanas de verano en Londres: Puedes ver de todo, primero, no puedes ignorar el
sonido espeluznante que pone a todo el mundo a bailar; igualmente, unas carrozas bien trabajadas mostrando los colores alegres del Caribe que se toman el oeste de un Londres tímidamente soleado, mientras que cantidades de actores sorprendentes se mezclan en las calles apretadísimas y millones de personas tratan de caber en pedacitos de calle, eso es lo que llamo el verdadero desafío, ¿o me equivoco? Así, en las semanas que van al gran puente de vacaciones de agosto, usted se tiene que dejar llevar por la alegría contagiosa de bailarines, artistas y músicos que contribuyen de diversas maneras para que se produzca esta mezcla de culturas que anuncia que para donde vayas, no te podrás escapar de los inconfundibles signos de carnaval, que no se dejará ignorar. Personalmente, creo que es el símbolo más grande de alegría de Londres, si me lo preguntan.
Where? Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park. The Notting Hill Carnival was born in the 1950s as an idea from the struggling African-Caribbean immigrant community -in North Kensington- trying to ease old racial tensions and finding ways to heal race relations and decrease cultural differences. kind of noble, right? Little
by little, more forgotten communities responded and were happy to join this remarkable medley of cultural demonstrations. The event is now enjoyed by both Londoners and visitors, which adds to the fun of the summer festivities as it is now vital to the local community. They say the rents at this period of time are crazily increased due to the massive numbers of tourists staying in the area.
¿Y Por donde pasa? Por Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park.
El Carnaval de Notting Hill nació por allá en los años 50; fue idea de la comunidad inmigrante afirmo-caribeña de North Kensignton, quienes tratando de calmar las asperezas raciales, trataban de sanar relaciones interculturales y reducir esas mismas diferencias. Así se habla de orígenes nobles o no? Poco a poco, otras comunidades olvidadas fueron respondiendo y accedieron finalmente a ser contribuyentes en tan variada mezcla de demostraciones culturales. Este magnífico evento se disfruta igualmente por los Londinenses y visitantes, lo cual se suma a las alegres festividades del verano; esto indiscutiblemente lo convierte en parte vital para la comunidad. Se dice que el alquiler en estas fechas se sube de manera atroz debido
a la gran cantidad de turistas que llegan a Londres.
En sus marcas, listos...GO!!! I always thought it would be nice to be engaged in the party as an attendee at such an international entertainment event but I was able to do more than that thanks to a very generous Nury, a Colombian friend whose contagious energy was far too precious to avoid. And there she had Zaida, Sergei, Iraida, Olger, Ninoska and me taking time from work and studies to rehearse Colombian rhythms such as Garavato and Cumbia. It was a great opportunity to meet other Colombians living in London and learn from their stories how they had made it in the UK.
Siempre pensé que sería chévere dejarse contagiar y presenciar un evento de entretenimiento tan internacional pero de ahí a participar, wow! Y todo gracias a Nury, una muy generosa amiga colombiana, quien con su contagiosa energía, no se le podía decir que no. Y cómo? si la invitación era a gozar? Y ahí mismo, Zaida, Sergei, Iraida, Older, Ninoska y este suscrito tuvieron que sacar tiempo del trabajo y de estudios para empezar a ensayar los sábados
The unvarnished truth
Si, bailé en el carnaval.algunos ritmos más que contagiosos como el Garabato y la Cumbia. En retrospectiva, qué bien Nury de darnos semejante oportunidad para conocer a otros colombianos que vivían en Londres y aprender de ellos sus historias en el Reino Unido.
Yes, that was the unvarnished truth as I really danced in the carnival and...for long; indeed, it was great to keep it up for nearly 6 hours, and even exaggerating the moves while being in front of the jury- on a hindsight, if I were to do that often, I would be a frail guy looking all anorexic and drained, which wouldn't be synonymous with the amazing energy displayed by everyone during the carnival. Yet despite my tiredness, I must say that I enjoyed it so much, as a matter of fact, having millions of people admiring the tiny sample of Colombia's folk we managed to display was the great excuse to overlook tiredness and forget about the required vitamin B intakes.
Esa es la purita verdad, SIIII, bailé en el carnaval y por mucho rato, Dios, lo cual fue otro desafío, el tener que conservar el ritmo caribeño durante 6 horas y exagerar los
movimientos mientras nos encontrábamos al frente del palco del jurado- en retrospectiva, si lo hiciera seguido, no habría más que anorexia y sequedad en esta piel 😊, lo cual contradice la sorprendente energía de los participantes e invitados al carnaval. Pero, bueno, a pesar de mi cansancio, debo decir que lo disfruté al máximo, es raro verse en frente de millones personas bailando al ritmo de una pequeña muestra de nuestra Colombia que pudimos medio organizar, lo cual fue excusa suficiente para olvidarse del cansancio y de la vitamina B, que creo que todos necesitábamos.
