It was one of those days you wish to forget. The kind that makes you rethink your entire travel itinerary. It rains cat's and dog's all day and even the locals were losing their smile. We had not seen the sun for almost four days and what was at first a lovely city was now becoming a dark and grey jail where all ideas of happiness and joy where taking away from you. When I was about to give up, something truly beautiful happen. I ran up the stairs of the building we were in and start staring at what looks unreal. The clouds were fading away and the sky was turning orange. The sun was reflecting on the water on the grass and it was making you almost blind. Less than twenty minute later, as ... read more

Well here I am, in the land of royalty, cockney accents, fish and chips, milky tea and and endless sea of concrete and tourists - London. I'm in Westminster actually and was able to stop on over and see the changing of the guard, quite a big whoop I guess, though, meh, I would give it a resounding OK. London is being torn apart right now in preparation for the coming Olympics and as such even Buckingham Palace is just one massive construction zone. The spectacle of it all is quite amusing, but between the hundreds (literally hundreds, if not thousands) of young students, and fellow rubberneckers, I am not sure that this is on the top of my list. Big Ben was quite a site as well as the offices of the Parliament. The Thames, ... read more

23 degrees Celsius. The end of March. Picnicking on Hampstead Heath in shorts and t-shirts. Sitting at an outdoors café in the sun eating scrambled eggs and mushrooms. Struggling to find some of Boris’s bikes to hire as the heat has brought out every man and his dog seeking to cycle in Hyde Park on a Sunday in an early Spring. Unbelievable but all true. We sat on the steps of Tate Britain waiting for the Picasso exhibition to open, looking at the muddy Thames hedged by glass and concrete towers. What did I find out about Picasso? Confirmation of his dalliances; confirmation of his profound influence on UK painters. Anecdotes from a full life. A delicate pencil portrait of Lydia Lopokova caught my eye. A ‘particular friend’ of Picasso’s from Diaghilev’s ballet company, she kept ... read more

I suggested a doubt, that if I were to reside in London, the exquisite zest with which I relished it in occasional visits might go off, and I might grow tired of it. JOHNSON. " ... No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." I don't know where or how to start. I guess I should first tell you what is behind it, but I can really say where it started. Well, I mean. It started from a dream and a decision. A dream of freedom. An easy decision. Again, I learned that the hardest picks are most of the time, the obvious one. I did not sold everything and left. Neither I save money for the trip of my ... read more

If you are reading this, it means that you were very kind in subscribing to my blog while I was living and travelling in Ukraine. As you may know, I left Kyiv in 2010 and am now working in London - which, to my great sadness, makes travel impossible. I have had to give up travel writing, but recently started a new blog, called A Brush With Russian, for my friends at the language agency Russian Linguistic Services. It will be all about Russian and other Eurasian languages and culture: you can subscribe to it to learn more about the countries of Eurasia, and share my cultural discoveries from all over the Former Soviet Union. It would be lovely to hear what you think of A Brush With Russian, and your ideas about which countries and ... read more

Sunday was a very eventful day with a audio tour through Buckingham Palace and then the Thames River Festival right afterwards. The palace was everything I expected and more. We were allowed to go through the State Rooms and some other rooms as well. We listened to an audio recording as we were guided through at our own pace. They did the audio recordings because they were in 7 different languages! There are very grand and elaborate entrances, receiving rooms, staircases, and even the hallways are extravagant. The grand staircase is something you would only expect to see in the movies and I was lucky enough to actually get to walk through it. They were describing that when they built the palace they had a budget and they exceeded that budget by three times because of ... read more

Another beautiful day in London Town and I’m off for a two-hour walk around the Palace area and the West End. We started out at Big Ben (St. Stephens Tower) and headed off through St. James Park towards Buckingham Palace. We hurried along so that we could see the guards. The park was filled with people enjoying the great weather, reading, playing with the kids or their dog, the ducks, geese and swans honking. We found a great spot along the Mall just around the corner from St. James Palace. The New Guards paraded by, band playing, scarlet coats brilliant in the sunshine. These soldiers will replace the guards currently on duty. After they passed we followed our guide through the park and to the area where the old Guards were guarding. There are five groups ... read more

Awoke early to an overcast day. Read for a while then went downstairs for a breakfast of fresh fruit, juice and coffee. A bit pricy but was convenient. Around 9 I headed out. Just as I left it started to sprinkle so I went back for my jacket. Halfway down the stairs of my hotel I saw the sunshine. Decided to drop off the raincoat and take my chances with the weather. My plan was to get my travel card, hop the tube to the Tower stop, meet the group from London Walks at 10:30 and tour the Tower of London. Paddington is just a block away but the tube station was a zoo. The machine doesn’t sell 7-day travel cards so it was line up to buy the ticket from the only live person selling ... read more
