All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go! - Unlike John Denver, I managed to restrict myself to 10kg's and half a rucksack. Impressive considering that includes the Digital SLR, gifts, mail to forward on and Penguin News quests. Note to self, must buy boxers and socks tomorrow as I left most of them in the airing cupboard! After a few leaving drinks in the Victory Bar, cobwebs were brushed aside and the journey started at 6am on Friday. Leaving Stanley and the layer of ice (flat soles poor choice), departed Stanley with Dad and Leif. Check in was speedy which allowed plenty of time for the FIC West Store 'Mega breakfast' (just in case they don't do the full English in London!). Thank you Dad and Leif for the lift. Despite the Friday the ... read more

Only a few hours now and we are packed and ready to go for our 3.30am taxi. The good news is that we have exceed our target fundraising amount of £6,000 and actually stand at £6,103 after some last minute donations. With gift aid the total is £6,910 which is an amazing amount to raise. We hope some additional last minute or post-trek donations will come in to further boost our effort. Many thanks to everyone who has donated to our charity and provided us with support along the way. We look forward to sharing our stories and pictures on this blog and in person when we return!! ... read more

Thought it might be useful and/or interesting for those without much of a clue what climbing Kilimanjaro is going to include. There are seven different routes available and the route we are taking is called the Marangu route which is the oldest and most established. This route is one of the most popular but that also means that it has the lowest success rate as many people expect a walk in the park! It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations instead of camping. Whilst it will be far from luxury lodgings, at least the body heat of many will keep the cold at bay! We will carry a day pack which will contain our essentials such as extra clothes, water, snacks, etc. and probably weight around 5 kilos. The ... read more

Our last day in London We meet up with our good friends grown up children. We had breakfast together. Bridget was able to talk to Claire about a job over the summer. Breakfast and conversation ran almost into lunchtime. It was lovely to catch up with Mark and finally meet the lovely Clarie. I also had a conversation with Chris from home. He and his wife had just been to the Anzac service at Westminster Cathedral. We then ventured of to the Bidesfield Markets. They stretched on and on. Everything you could image was there. Once again it was the food. Oh! What to choose. Stalls from all over the world. I eventually settled on Moroccan. I'm not sure what Tim had in the end. Bridget and Brendan had organized a very exciting evening out. We ... read more

London Rest of the Week ( I have lost my hard copy diary on the train) We had never been to Greenwich Village. We cued up for a water taxi and cruised down the river. Greenwich is huge. A large naval base. The grounds are covered in large imposing buildings now home to The Trinity College of music and a university the name which escapes me. We didn't go into the building to set our watches as it was very expense, so instead we wandered through the observatory which was free and I'm sure much more interesting. Our watches will all just have to stay on different times. There is a tunnel under the Thames that you can use. It has very imposing towers (under repair at each end) We spent the afternoon at Richmond Park. ... read more

Today we decided to play the tourist and went to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. There’s a lot to get involved with and various activities and interesting facts. Of course you can go right up to them so we had all the obligatory photos with our favourites. It really is amazing how life-like some of them look. Some of them look a lot like wax figures, but then some of them look like that in real life anyway! This afternoon, I decided to go for a run again and instead of getting lost around Wimbledon Common I headed towards my old neighbourhood of Putney. It was refreshing running around the area again. Memories ran through my head as I ran along the banks of the River Thames right up ... read more

Hello one and all! We just wanted to take a moment to wish all our friends and family a very merry Christmas! We wish that we could be there to celebrate with all our friends and family in Australia, but we tried to make the best of our possibly one and only English Christmas. We pretty much spent the day inside our lovely warm flat, with only a brief trip outside to head to a local church for their Christmas service. We woke up earlyish and opened our exciting presents (Paul's present highlight was a camera tripod while mine was a violin), after which our lovely friends Sara and Michelle joined us just before church, and Simon was able to join us for a few hours over lunch. We ate and ate and ate (menu included ... read more

Welcome one, Welcome all! We thought we would update you all on what our housing situation is like now. Although we have lived here for almost 9 months now, we haven't sent through any photos. This is partly because we are slack and partly because we had no furniture to begin with, as we are now renting an unfurnished flat. Our first few weeks were spent sleeping on blow-up mattresses, but slowly we have built up enough furniture (thanks Freecycle!) that we now live in the lap of luxury. So sit, back and enjoy the virtual visit to our new abode! ... read more

Our First Foray into Blogging Hello to everyone who is interested in the many thoughts and travels to come!
