This weekend, as part of an attempt to make my application for the Goldwater National Scholarship as competitive as possible, North Central funded my travel and participation in the Early Career Mathematicians’ Autumn Conference which was put on by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. I left Friday morning for London, and after taking a bus from the airport into the city, I settled into the hostel. I went and found the hotel that my family and I are staying at when we are back for Christmas, and I was able to find a nice restaurant that we can have Christmas dinner at. That evening, I met my friend Mackenzie, who I knew from high school, and a few of her friends that she was traveling with for dinner. We walked around for a bit ... read more

Today we did some more touristy things but it wasn’t as much as yesterday. We started our day with a walk around the Olympic Village. We stopped at one of the two New Zealand owned cafes to have a drink which had a good view of the main stadium. We walked around until we got to the other side of the stadium which had a better view of all the stadiums. It looked like most of the stadiums were nearly done which was good. We had a look at some boards they had put up about the London Olympics which had a map of where all the stadiums are and it told us what stadiums were for what sport and also what they were going to do with the buildings after the Olympics. One of the ... read more

Today was our main sightseeing day. We had planned to make it to Buckingham Palace in time to see the changing of the guards which they do everyday. Walking through the park by the Palace and stopping to have a look at the cute squirrels on the way. Surprising they put on a pretty big performance with horses, a band and a lot of guards when all they were doing was changing over two guards. We couldn’t work out if they do that everyday or once a week or if they were even practicing for the Queens parade which was in a few weeks. It was still great to see and the crowds were huge! Luckily we got there early so Sophia and I were able to get a good place right up by the gate ... read more

On Monday Rhonda had brought us tickets to go to the Hampton Court Wine and Food Festival. Luckily the weather was fine so we were able to sit down, relax and enjoy the food. Alison was also with us as well as two of Rhonda’s friends. As the day got on the sky became greyer and greyer so we decided we better leave before it starts pouring down. We were able to have a quick look at the Hampton Court Palace. Although we didn’t see much as you had to pay for everything including the gardens and the maze. For tea we went to a restaurant near by with Rhonda’s gay neighbour which was good fun. Today (Tuesday) we had planned to do the sights but the weather didn’t hold up so we decided to go ... read more

Sunday was our market day. Our first market on the list was the Columbia Road flower market. I’d never seen so much people on such a small and narrow street it was absolutely packed with people. It was a mission to get in one side and out the other. We pretty much just went there for a look as it would have been pointless to buy anything. While pushing through the crowd to get out the other end it was funny listening to all the sellers trying to draw people in with their great deals, ‘Two for a fiver’ and ‘three for a tenner’ all in the British accent of course. From there we walked to Brick Lane known for its vintage clothes and accessories also another popular street on a Sunday. Unlike Columbia Road Brick ... read more

London was set to be another busy week with trying to jam all the sights into one week on top of the shopping of corse. Our first full day there was the Saturday which Sophia and I spent with Rhonda while mum and dad went to the Chelsea flower show. We started the day going to a city farm near Rhonda's house where one of her friends worked. There we saw heaps of farm animals and even got to hold some cute baby rabbits. It was unusual there being a farm right in the middle of London. They are put there for all the school kids who may not have seen any of those animals before. Next up we had to go and do the grocery shopping where Rhonda brought us heaps of chocolate. From there ... read more

We flew to London on Wednesday for 5 days to see the royal weddng which was on Friday. We stayed at my Aunty Rhondas' house which was a bit tight on space but it was alright. We woke up early and planned to leave the house around 9 o'clock to face the streets of London. We got outside and the streets were pretty much empty. We caught the bus to Oxford Circus. We then walked to South Bank. There was a big screen there so you could watch the wedding but there were only about 20 people there. We were surprised how empty the place was. Along with watching the wedding from the London streets we also wanted to be apart of the atsomspheire. We decided to carry on walking to the next big screen. The ... read more

An easy trip to London from Vendome. Phillipe drove us 40 min to Tours airport, 1 hour flight into Stanstead London, 45 min bus ride into Stratford and around the new Olympic site, to where Rhonda met us and took us to her apartment near by.  Great to see Rhonda after four years from when we were here last. And her new apartment now three years old. Lots of reminiscing. Although her apartment was small - bedroom, lounge, kitchen, and bathroom were the only spaces - we fitted in fine and were quite happy. We were able to keep an eye on comings and goings in the street just like Rhonda and even watch Sophia out in the street playing with a neighbourhood girl Molly she befriended.  Other than the wedding we only had time and ... read more

Here is my planned trip. Hope you can all see the map! I can't see it when I'm writing. The maroon sections are the states I'll be visiting, and the blue sections are the states I'm going to travel through to get to the maroons. Haryana should be in blue but for some reason the map won't save the changes here. I'm planning to visit: Kolkata (West Bengal) Darjeeling (West Bengal) Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) Amritsar (Punjab) Delhi (Delhi) Agra (Uttar Pradesh) Mumbai (Maharashtra) Goa (Goa) Kochi/ Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) So it goes in a kind of anticlockwise direction startin... read more

As I wait for Friday, when I leave sunny Stepney for Kolkata, I'm half excitedly, half nervously, wondering how the hell I got myself into this. Travelling to India on the other side of the world. On my own. For three months. How did I get into this crazy situation? The furthest I'd been on holiday was to Ibiza, and that was my last holiday abroad, and that was about seven years ago. I suppose I'd better explain how and why I arrived here, as well as those I hold responsible. I've always been kind of fascinated with India. It goes back to before I was the wannabe 60s mod I am now, to my teens, when I was a wannabe 60s hippy. My favourite group was The Beatles, and I loved their psychedelic music more ... read more
