We finally arrived at Gatwick, and zipped over to Durrants Hotel on George Street. It is a lovely old London hotel, with a lot of character…but less than good service. The hotel still uses what look to be original keys, which you turn into them every time you leave the hotel. We freshened up and headed out into the afternoon to do a bit of shopping and have a bite of dinner – the next two days would be very full with meetings, so it was really the only free time we had. I picked up some doggy mugs at a great kitchen shop along the Marylebone High Street, which match the dog mug I got there last year (now I’ll have four!), and picked up the matching forks and knives for the two spoons I ... read more

So final farewells in London with pals Brian, Tim and his cousin Kate at the Gunmakers, Marylebone last night. (London Glory and a cheeky little Cianti) One last pint or two today (16th) with friend Lorna Pearce at the Churchill Arms, Notting Hill (fullers london pride) and then to the airport. Met a lovely American guy Andy from Texas on train. He had had a few too many at lunch and was zonked out snoring a goodun with his feet up. Chatted some. Hope he stays awake at the airport for his flight home. Heading for the bar accosted by young girl with sample of grey goose vodka. “Why not?“ I thought. Wandering around dury free also sampled a 15yr old Drambuie. three types of Tequilla, Havana Club, chocolates and finally free spray of Hugo Boss. ... read more

There has been more variety of walks added recently. We were interested in the walk of Old Marylebone yesterday from Bond Street starting from Bond Street. After leaving the bustling Oxford Street, we were taken to the little lane lined with charming individual shops and stylish restaurants, which is one of the features of Marylebone village. Before arriving at the Wallace Collection, we saw the very distinctive mustard coloured building, i.e. the very famous Methodist Church on Hinde Street. The walk included the guided tours of Wallace Collection’s highlight paintings. We were given the interpretation of the famous paintings, French furniture, etc. Afterwards, we walked northwards and were shown the back and face of St James Roman Catholic Church, the design of façade looked similar to one I visited in southern France several years ago. We met our friend at our hotel around 6:30 and caught a taxi over to our other friend’s flat. He lives on the ground floor of a flat that is one of many in a complex surrounding a garden – he is also in charge of the garden, and is apparently the only person under 70 and the only man to serve on the committee. We got a very quick tour of his flat and headed outside to see the garden. It’s not your typical English garden in that everything wasn’t pruned and clipped perfectly. They prefer it to be a natural garden, and it very much made me think of the Secret Garden. There is a long pathway around the garden with all kinds of plants, including huge hydrangeas with blooms the size of my ... read more

Normally, I would write these posts as I am traveling, but this time, I felt like I was more in need of the rest whenever I had a down moment, than I was in need of recording exactly how I felt at the time. So instead, I’m putting pen to paper, as it were, while flying home at the end of a week away. *** We left on a Saturday evening for London, planning to spend three days there to prepare for our conference in 2013. I had big plans to watch some of the television shows and movies offered on our Virgin Atlantic flight, but I was just so darned tired, so instead, I mostly slept. Arriving on Sunday morning, I was keeping my fingers crossed that our hotel rooms would be ready for us ... read more

I'd forgotten what a wonderful place London is. It may be an expensive, clogged city for those that have to live and work here, but for a visitor staying on the edge of the square mile and picking off some of the best sights Europe has to offer it's just amazing. It was more majestic, cleaner, quieter and easier to travel around that I recall from University days and the following years when I lived in/west of the city. We travelled down from Lincolnshire on the train and spent 3 nights/4 days in London, staying in a small hotel just off Edgeware Road. The locals obviously heard that we were coming and decided to do some rioting to welcome us. Although there were trouble spots all over the city, we heard and saw nothing apart from ... read more

so here i am, sitting in my office, in the very last week before i commence my long awaited sebbatical and take a break away from my cosy comfortable life to take a giant stride outside my comfort zone and embark on a solo adventure. all i can say is that right now it feels totally surreal, unreal, incredible and f*@k*ng scary!!!! i'm starting up this blog in an attempt to avoid bombarding all my lovely friends and family with email after email detailing every bit of this journey, so instead you can all decide when you want to check in and share with me in some high's, low's and no doubt some crazy moments along the way. hopefully i can make this thing at least a little entertaining, not just for you guys but for ... read more

We played locals today and went down to the local playground for a run around. It wasn’t a nice day but at least it was nice to get the kids out and do something for them. We then had a coffee at the local shopping centre which has a kid’s play area! My kind of cafe! Then this afternoon, we found a great Gymboree indoor playground for kids. It’s so brilliant and so perfect for English weather. It’s not a big room, maybe 10m x 5m, but it has lots of things to climb on, slide down and jump over! There are mats everywhere so it’s really soft to land on. I think Edyn realised this because she choose this place to take her first walk! She’s taken one step here and there, but today she ... read more

Back to travelling again! This time, I'm on a long business trip, starting first with London. I haven't been here since my visit in between the two bombings in the summer of 2007 and we arrived right on the heels of the url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7798513/Cumbria-shootings-gunman-Derrick-Bird-kills-12-then-shoots-himself.htmlterrible shootings in Cumbria. After London, we're headed off to Singapore for our Annual Meeting. I was a bit worried about having to leave the office so close to a big conference, particularly since we had to move the conference from Bangkok just about four weeks ago. But it turns out that I was more than able to handle the email details remotely and it gave me a mandatory break from work today, which was nice! We took the day flight from New Jersey, which left at 8am - I've never done that before, ... read more

In the two weeks since we left Sydney we've seen and done a lot. In fact this is the first chance I've had to take breath and write about our journey so far. Our first stopover was in Dubai for four nights. It was hot (but not as extreme as it can get in summer) there but well airconditioned -even the bus stops are cooled. Our accommodation was great. We had decided against one of the high rise tower hotels that abound in Dubai and booked into the Orient Guest House, a B&B in the Bastakiya area of Dubai. It was south of the creek that divides the city, in the oldest part of town, in an area settled originally by traders in the 1800's. The Dubai government had restored the original buildings across about a ... read more
