I recently spent a weekend in London and Dartford. The purpose of the trip was going to Nicki's and Corey's engagement party in Dartford. However, I had some opportunity to do some sightseeing in London and had a leisurely lunch at Leicester Square where I was given another pizza because it was not hot even if I did not mind too much - but they insisted!!! The Monument
I learnt The Monument is renowned for 'Great Views, Great Climb and Great History'. I found this to be true especially the 'Great Climb'!!! I had to cilmb up 311 steps (or 48.5 metres) to reach the top. The climb was worthwhile for the views of the River Thames and the city skyline. I received a certificate to prove my ascent to the top! The Monument commenerates 1666's Great Fire of London and it took 50 years for the city to be rebuilt. The Tower Bridge Exhibition
Having a combined ticket for The Monument, I had an opportunity to revisit The Tower Bridge Exhibition. On previous occasions, I enjoyed my visits and learnt a lot about the bridge. However, I felt disappointed because I feel now that the tour
is somewhat shorter and briefer compared to previous visits. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was for the first time. I am glad I got a combined ticket for seeing the attraction at a reduced rate as I feel the normal admittance price is not worth it for the exhibition. Still, I enjoyed taking photos from the walkways at the top of the bridge of the sights down below. I noted that I climbed another 250 steps to the walkways!!! A lot of Steps.....
Altogther, I went up and down 1000+ steps visiting the two attractions! This is excluding the underground! I noted on my map there is even a stair-free route around the area I explored.
I was able to explore the Thames Riverside further between Tower Bridge and London Bridge admiring the old and new and the traditional and modern. I had a relaxing afternoon chilling out at Leicester Square cafe where the manager apologised to me for the noisy couple sitting next to me who had their laptop film playing out loud! The Party
The main reason for my trip! I caught a train to Dartford at Charing
Nicki & Corey
The special couple!
Cross Station (paid a lot less than anticipated for my rail fare - a special weekend return fare offer!). At the hotel, there was a mix up of bookings but at least I got a room. It was very noisy with the pub downstairs and the local church bells woke me up very early in the morning. I was not happy about that because I was hoping for a long lie in! Anyway, I could not sleep very well because of the noises and the room was very hot! I guess it had to do for one one night and it was not expensive. I was looking forward to my own bed when I returned home!!! With regards to the party, my other, friend, Liz, and I travelled to the party in Wilmington, a village near Dartford. It was a great party overall and we met some new friends! It was even nicer having my drinks paid for!!! We all raised a toast and congratulated Nicki and Corey on their engagement and wished them both the very best for the future and their safe return to Australia. An evening worthwhile going down for!
This summed up another enjoyable weekend
Up to the top!
