at all the cross walks they tell you which way to look so that you dont get run over. because they WILL run you over here. Hello! I've almost been here a week but it feels like I have been here for much longer than that. I really love this city. Let me tell you some things that I have done recently:
The other day we went to the Tower of London which was probably one of the coolest things I have done here. We had a chance to see where all the kings lived and we also were able to see all of the crowns that Queen and Kings wore. Sorry, no pictures for those. We actually went on a tour of the White Tower, which was originally a dungeon where they kept prisoners. We had an official tour guide man and he told us that when they were brought to the dungeon, the guards would take all their money but allow them to buy food and other things on a regular basis. We also saw the last beheading block that was used in London. Apparently, after each time that the block is used, a new one is supposed to be used. Apparently, the person that beheaded the guy used the same block more than once, and in this country that is treason. So, someone
blackmailed him and said that if he didn't give away the block, he would turn him in. There was some really interesting things in the Tower of London; so much history. The tube right to the Tower was the longest I have ever taken, and it was packed. We were told to go early because otherwise you would get stuck in lines later in the day, so we went at 830, right in the middle of morning "traffic".
I also went to Westminster Abby, a church were several of the Kings and Queens are actually buried. We weren't able to take pictures in there either, go figure. It was a really beautiful place. You can actually go there anytime of the week and worship in the church for free. In the church, there is something known as the poet's corner and it has statues of famous poets from England. Aimee was able to snag a picture of Shakespeare. Yesterday, we went to Piccidilley Circus; the New York City of London. It was very crowded. There is actually a China Town, and we went and ate some English Chinese food. It was not the best chinese I have ever had,
Tube
the tube tunnel but not the worst either.
One of the most exciting things that I have done here is watched the Manchester United vs. Chelsea soccer match. It was the Champions League Final, which is the championship of the all the European teams in the league. It was the first time that two English teams have made it to the final. We actually live near Chelsea so I felt obligated to cheer for them. We went to Imperial College (a college just down the street from us that has a lot of international students there) and watched the game on the lawn. There were tons of people there. It was really nice to watch the game in a country that appreciates the game. They were being loud and yelling; it was awesome. For those of you who didn't watch the game, Ronaldo scored an amazing header in the first half of the game to put Manchester up by one goal. It remained 1-0 until the 45th minute when Chelsea scored a goal. The balls was deflected off a couple players and one of the Chelsea players was there to put the ball in. Neither team scored in the 2nd half and
Me and Aimz
our first tube ride it went to penalty shoot outs. Ronaldo (Manchester's saving grace with the goal in the 1st half) missed his PK and it came down to the lasts player of Chelsea to score the winning PK. It had been raining all day in Moscow (where the game was played) and the player actually slipped and hit the post. The game ended with Man U winning in PK's. It was one of the most exciting games I have ever seen. People went crazy at the college and there were actually some riots throughout London.
Our program also had a football (soccer) match yesterday between the people in the house. We played in the local park, Hyde Park, with our RA's. It was one of the best times that I've had here. My roommate and I play for the same team back home, and we actually cheated to end up on the same team. The game reminded me a lot of bunch ball from when we were in rec soccer, but I had a really good time playing. I actually scored a goal. The RA for my dorm actually played on our team and he is English and very good. Needless to
say, we dominated the game, but someone managed to lose. haha. We had a few injuries but nothing too serious.
The night life here is exciting. Not too many places are open past 11. Well, the pubs aren't. They actually have people in the bathrooms that give you napkins when you walk out to dry your hands. And in the bathrooms they have stuff to spray on yourself, but be careful because they charge you money for the spray! My friend was in the bathroom and was spraying stuff and the lady charged her TWO POUNDS. THATS 4 AMERICAN DOLLARS PEOPLE! FOR JUST A LITTLE BIT OF SPRAY! She was probably ripping us off but still...I couldn't believe it!
Well, I think that is enough on the entry for the day. I will keep ya'll updated!
P.S. its cloudy for the first time in many days here. We have brought the sunshine from Texas with us. 😊
