Tuesday 12th May 2009 So I didn’t sleep very well last night. I was getting quite stressed about the interview and couldn’t calm down. Thankfully those drinks helped me sleep a bit. Up early to get organised for the interview. Dressed to impress, which is not easy sometimes when you live in a hostel with 7 other people in your room. I’m starting to get a little annoyed with the hostel living. I’m sick of people coming and going all the time. I stress a little thinking that they may pinch some stuff out of my suitcase but there’s nothing I can do about it. All my valuables are locked up though!! Getting nervous now sitting on the tube getting towards my pre-interview with Poolia. Met with a girl called Tarrilyn and went through everything that ... read more

Sunday 10th May 2009 Sunday the day of rest! Well, sometimes anyway...it was kind of a rough night. Everyone came back into the room at about 4.30am which is to be expected on a Saturday night but they just kept talking really, really loudly and I think one of them was smoking in the room! Ewwww. An early morning start. Caught up with Bec and Vanessa for breakfast and then decided to do absolutely nothing at all. I mean literally nothing. I organised myself a bit better and that took the better part of the day. Karen has moved out to a place for 3 weeks. A friend of hers and her partner went away for three weeks so Karen gets to rent their place for a while fairly cheaply. Lucky her! Since its Bec's last ... read more

Friday 8th May 2009 I must have slept very well last night! Didn't even hear people come in - I hope I didn't snore!! Today will be a very lazy day. I MUST DO SOME WASHING!! Went downstairs and caught up with Vanessa. Breakfast still looks appealing - I musn't be hung over then! THANKFULLY!!! Bummed around for a couple of hours downstairs and found out Vanessa needed to do washing as well. So it was really good to have two of us, we could do a white and coloured wash and it wouldn't cost as much. We had so much trouble finding laundry to do our washing. We were told to walk down one street, so we kept walking and walking and walking! Couldn't find it anywhere! Walked up and down the road for 20 ... read more

The Oxford Cambridge Boat Race, was held today. http://www.theboatrace.org/ It was the 155th race and Oxford won. We managed to get a spot by the river about 5 minutes before the race started, which surprised me - I thought that it would be about 8 people deep, even though we were about half way along the course. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends - Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow schoolfriend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. You wouldn't believe the amount of snow we had within 24 hours to mark the start of February. In fact you could make snow balls within 20 minutes of the first flake. We were out having dinner with a few other Aussies and Kiwis in Hammersmith when it started, and on the way home our street was full of people taking photos! Even the locals were amazed. Unluckily (or luckily) it was the worst snow the UK had seen in 19 years, and so on Monday, it was no surprise that all public transport was out. Six million people were stuck at home that day, with three feet of snow bringing London and much of the UK to a standstill. One of my colleagues walked an epic two hours to work each way, but darned if ... read more

It would be silly not to spend at least one festive season in London, so this year we decided to play hosts to a big Christmas pot-luck lunch at our flat for all our 'Kiwi orphan' friends. A couple of days before, Clements and I stocked the cupboards in preparation as we knew we'd be calling family back home and going out for a few pints on Xmas Eve. Turns out that prediction was bang on, as after Joel had stuffed the turkey and I had called Nana and Grandy in Feilding and Grandy in Christchurch, we headed down to meet our old flatmates in Fulham for a few. It wasn't a big night, but we still gave it a good nudge and came home armed with a few boxes of chicken at around midnight. Xmas ... read more

Next spot quiz - name the band and album quoted in the title. Well done to Gabs Browning for correctly identifying that Geoff Woad's 20lb head was a reference to 'Withnail and I'. Your prize - such as it is - coffee with the author, and a signed first edition of the next post, tomorrow in Reading. Anyhow. London. Very strange to come back here after so long. By the time I woke up Dee and Hosko were out at work and I had their lovely flat to myself, so it was a slow start to say the least. I wandered into Hammersmith in search of brekkie. Was pleasantly surprised to see that my UK bank card worked - it's been sat in a drawer for 4 years - but it gave me forged 20 pound ... read more

My last day in New York - Friday. Had to pack my stuff up, get organised, check out, pay the lovely bill. New York is proper expensive. I wanted to take the boat to the Statue of Liberty, but the weather wasn't really behaving. It was beautiful and sunny - totally clear - but a touch brisk and pretty windy. Several locals had said that if it’s windy in the city, don’t bother with the islands…….anyhow I thought I’d go see for myself. Thankfully I could leave my bag at the hotel, and my flight wasn’t till the evening. So I walked downtown. All the way down 6th, and hung a right somewhere, and wound up at the edge of the Hudson river. On my way there I stumbled upon a bar called Walkers, who had ... read more

Three Times in Three Weeks! Must be a record for me, even if I seem to have spent more time in London this summer than I did all of last year, I don't think I managed it three weeks running. Though it's not even three weeks, it's actually only 16 days! 21st October 2008 Had college in the morning so didn't set off for London until around 2pm. Got to Charing Cross where I was meeting my friends then headed off for the tube to take us to TV Centre at White City (tube station). Arrived at TV Centre to find a rather long queue outside the audience entrance. After going into the glass building next door to see if we where in the right place, and finding a couple of daleks, sadly no David Tennant ... read more
