There was a massive, shopping mall (as Australians and Americans know them), built in Shepherd’s Bush a few years ago so we went to check it out today. Prior to this, really the main way of shopping for Londoners was on the high streets, each high street all over London, containing the same chain stores. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to tell which suburb you’re in at all because all the high streets look the same! I love this though because it is so English and I’m sure a lot of people who feel the same way, weren’t too happy when this massive complex sprouted some years ago. But we went to have a look anyway. As it turns out, there are still all the same chain stores that you see on the high streets, just ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London! I have made it back here safely after what has been an excellent and amazing trip, in a truly beautiful and hospitable country. Tunisia is just such a great destination to visit, and I can't recommend it enough - its combination of beautiful places, relatively easy transport and friendly and welcoming people just make it great for a first-time traveller venturing outside the West, and if it's not been made obvious so far, it was just great for me too! Writing this one safely from the confines of my front room in Hammersmith, listening to my own music from my own CD player, having had a stinkingly hot bath this morning as well as bacon and eggs (my favourite!) for breakfast. My washing machine is going at full blast, with four ... read more

Hi All, Arrived in London yesterday just after 5.00am and caught the underground to Hammersmith. The rental is good, a small terrace in a row of identical terraces. The weather as expected is cold and there has been a very nice dusting of snow today, so London is looking exceptionally attractive with fresh white snow and lots of Christmas lights. Have been shopping on Oxford Street yesterday, Westminster Abbey and The Cabinet War rooms today. Also walked thru a snow covered St James Park to Buckingham Palace, watched the changing of the horse guard and had a couple of close encounters with the local squirrels. More snow coming over the next few days, so it will be interesting to see how the city copes.... read more

Dear All I'm back again! After nearly four months of feet on the ground, another holiday is coming up and I've packed my backpack yet again. This time heading for a closer location, but still far enough to be exotic and adventurous (I hope!). Tunisia, in 19 days! After waking up at stupid o'clock again tomorrow morning - 3am - I'll be flying myself off to Tunis, capital of Tunisia, via Rome. Planning on a couple of days in the capital, to include the remains of the Ancient City of Carthage, before heading south via El Jem colisseum, Mahdia, and hopefully not too many tourist beach-traps, towards Matmata and Star Wars country. From here, there should be a desert trip in there somewhere, crossing the massive salt lake of Chott el Jerid, towards the oasis towns ... read more

Hey Guys Me is back in da London Town, wicked! Had such an amazing journey, 4 weeks of seeing some really great places and meeting some great people, but now am so glad to be back in my own place, with my own bed waiting for me upstairs, typing this blog entry on my own laptop, and about to have an obscenely stinkingly hot bath very shortly. Bliss! Thought I’d write one final entry to round things off for this trip, to let people know I’ve arrived back safely, and safely being the operative word when we’re talking Caracas and Venezuela it seems, and upload just a couple more photos from my last few days of travel. Also to say thanks for reading my blog. It’s been a really great way of travelling, and unique, and ... read more

Hi Guys! This is my first attempt at a Blog, and this system all seems pretty confusing and I'm not sure how to update my status, profile etc. at this point. Maybe I'm too old, but anyway, if I get the hang of this: Wow - here I am in Hammersmith, packed and all raring to start my trip - tomorrow I head South and West, to the continent of South America for the second time! Thought I'd keep a blog this time, not only to keep a nice record of my travels, but also to let anyone out there know I'm safe as I travel (as well as hopefully regaling some exciting adventures as I go...!) And the amazing thing is that if I figure this whole thing out, I'll be able to upload pictures ... read more

Before we arrived, our plan was rock solid. We had enough living money for two weeks but we would not, of course, need this amount as Victoria would be working almost immediately and I would naturally follow. It has not quite worked out that way and, as I write, it has not really worked out at all. Despite some administrative hiccups and repetitions, Victoria has managed to work her way into 'supply' teaching quite confidently. The recruitment agencies can be rather brutal, stretching the truth in order to make their sales quota, but the work has been frequent enough for our basic lifestyle to be sustainable. From her reports the work is often difficult and demoralising but is mostly tolerable. The discontinuity and insecurity of the process, however, makes the longing for her own classroom come ... read more

Living with 12-15 people is not something I have experienced before, nor am I likely to again, but it does seem to be a definitive part of the London experience (or so I am told). Located in Shepherd's Bush, an area notorious for Aussie's, Kiwi's and Drunks (associations unproven) our place has seven bedrooms over four floors. With five double bedrooms (one with a single) and two singles, we officially have 11 in the house, but with girlfriends, couch sleeping friends and associated vagrants, the numbers have occasionally swollen to 15. Despite this it never really feels busy, although it has often been very loud. There is not a lot of communal space (a narrow kitchen and laundry, and small dining and living areas) but big bedrooms with doors that won't hold open. Although our room ... read more

When we first left, I had every intention of writing regularly. Last time we had travelled, I had been a consistent writer - something that I know others had enjoyed and I was glad I had recorded the memories upon our return. Five weeks after we have left, however, I am finding it considerably more difficult to reflect upon our journey. Something indefinable seems to have changed, as if I am a swimmer who is afraid to look back lest he discovers how far he has come. Before we left, I was full of anxiety at the prospect of such a move. This tension was not only from the prospect of living on the other half of the world, far from family, friends and my comfort zone, but of a transition from one stage of my ... read more

Nellie and Monk have had a busy weekend. On Saturday night they went to Monk's nephew Mitchell's 18th birthday party held in the Zizzi restaurant in Bexleyheath, where they took over most of the restaurant. It was a very sociable night, however, Monk did end up somewhat inebriated and was handing out Nellie's private telephone number to all and sundry. How's a girl supposed to stay on the straight and narrow when Monk was willing to give away her phone number for the price of a text message? (Ed. - Nellie's private number is 60777 - text inaid follow nellie - every penny of the one-off charge of £10 goes to Cancer Research UK). Sunday saw them at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith to hear Floss singing Christmas songs with the Lyric Singers, who'd been joined ... read more
