I decided to do a circular walking course around Chelsea on 8 June. Sloane Square and King’s Road were decorated with Union Jack flags. I remembered there are we used to go to the concert at Cadogan Hall. King’s Road had a number of designers’ shops – Hobbs, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Russell & Bromley, Whistles - and a lot of pretty looking tea rooms. I had a quick look at John Sandoe bookshop and found some modernist classic books. I was directed to turn right on Burnsail Street. Just a few minutes away from bustling King’s Road, it allowed me to see quiet, stylish Dutch houses. Many houses had beautiful roses, climbing roses and picturesque facades with pretty lamps, bay balconies and sash windows with balconies. As I walked on Britten Street, I found a ... read more

Mark had taken days off on 9th and 10th May. We decided to do a circular walk around Chelsea and Battersea Park on Monday, 9th May. We got off at Sloane Square. I remembered stylish buildings on Holberin Road, which we walked down to Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago. Unfortunately, owing to the Chelsea Flower Show which was due between 22nd and 27th May, the gate for the grounds of Royal Hospital including Ranelagh Garden was closed. Thus, we walked on Chelsea Bridge Road towards the Chelsea Bridge. We found the entrance gate for Battersea Park just after crossing over the bridge. We could see preparations for Chelsea Flower shop from the bridge and riverside walk on Battersea Park. The riverside walk led us to Buddhist Peace Pagoda, which is one of the main ... read more

Mark took a day off work on 4 October. We decided to visit Carlyle’s House in Chelsea in the afternoon. It took 15 minutes from South Kensington on foot. We walked through the charming residential area with several plaques of celebrities, e.g. Leigh Hunt (Essayist & Poet). The Carlyle House was home for Thomas Carlyle and his wife, and it is managed by the National Trust. I wanted to go to the toilet, and I used the one in the garden. It was the privilege to use the Victorian style toilet. We were invited to stroll through the Drawing Rooms, bedrooms, dressing room, dining room, and kitchen. It was interesting to see the 2nd floor of the house has been used by the custodian. All rooms and staircases were furnished with floral wallpapers, ... read more

After a long flight from New York via Iceland, we made it to London. We were lucky enough to be picked up by uncle Rex who we stayed with in Chelsea for the week while we were there. His place was right next door to the Chelsea football club so the following night we all went to watch them play against a Russian team which was an awesome experience. The 40,000 strong crowd with chants the whole game was far more vocal than any All Blacks match that you would get back home. On the first day we bought a 7 day oyster express card for $30 quid which allowed us to catch any land train, subway or bus as many times as we liked as long as they were within zone 1 & 2. We ... read more

Day 7 - January 10 I got up today around 8:30. Our first stop was at Earl's Court. We had to stop to show a few people the TARDIS. I guess it's this weird space and time machine from the tv show Dr. Who. Shannon was really excited about it, but most of us didn't understand. Not many people watch that show apparently. But I know my friend Rachel does so I took a picture of it for her Then, we headed off for the National Archives. It was a long ride to get there because it was in zone three and our tube cards are only good in zones one and two. So, we took the tube as far as we could, and then hopped on a bus. Then there was a short walk to ... read more

please excuse all the typos I'm on an iPod :) After two days of nonstop walking around London you would think that we would spend our free day doing as little as possible. Well you thought wrong! We started out the day at 8:35, and met Peter at 9. We walked over to the Chelsea football ticketing office to see if we could get nine tickets for the Wednesday night game. When we got there, however, we were told that all the tickets were sold out, but we could ask the manager of our hotel if he had any specially saved tickets. Peter told us that we could go eat breakfast while he talked to the manager. So, we did, and he came back about 30min later. He said that the manager only has 4 tickets ... read more

Since the hotel was close enough to the airport, they offer a shuttle. Brandy, the professors on the trip and I all hopped on the 530 shuttle and arrived at the airport just in time for checkin. I didn't have to check a bag so I went ... read more

On Thursday the 20th Karalyn, Stephanie, and I went to Harrods! It's a very ritzy department store off of Brompton Rd. and just a 30 min walk from where I'm staying in Chelsea. It is said that you used to be able to buy anything at Harrods even exotic animals like elephants and giraffes! I had no idea what to expect when I went in there and thought it was just going to be like a mall with a ton of store fronts but instead it's a huge department store. Think of Macy's with 7 floors! Of course they have a lower floor which is the basement and this is where all of the menswear is located along with other random things that are of no interest to me like a gentleman's lounge with a cigar area ... read more

What a successful weekend. Saturday we had our first bus tour and I was overloaded with beautiful architecture, scenery, and information. One of the best things I've noticed while on these tours is not only do I get the touristy side of London but also the local information too! To name a few places that I passed by or stopped to visit was Parliament, West Minister Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, the new 2012 Olympic building site among many other things that I have forgotten the names of but will be pursuing in greater detail and visiting at another time. Although when passing parliament she said that the courthouses are open to the public and we could walk in, sit down and listen to a trial. They even wear those funny wigs still! There aren't ... read more
