Our First Entry. After a difficult start to the year, Andrea and I decided that if either one of us was made redundant, we would take a year out and go and see the world, something we had both wanted to do for some time. As it turned out it was me that got the push in April and so we started to plan.... We have now bought our six main air tickets and will be away from home for 8 months... A relaxed journey from Paris back to London after a frantic clean up of the apartment to ensure there was no excuse not to return my deposit. We were all a little under the weather after a fine night of wining, wining, wining, wining and dining at the restaurant up the street, that we first encountered the day we arrived. I suspect our view of it as a great little restaurant is accurate as it was packed to the rafters every night with local French. James had a seafood risotto and surprised the waiter when he ordered it with frits, it was delicious, S & T both had a delicious duck and mash which was rather like a fantastic potato topped pie, and I had carpaccio of duck which was very thin sliced duck with ... read more

Madrid In late May, Jo and I, accompanied by the ever reliable Penny, Stuart, and Duncan, flew to Madrid for a weekend. The weather was a little iffy for the weekend: spells of warm sunny weather interspersed with periods of heavy rain... Overall, it was hot and sticky, but a pleasant change from London. We spent the majority of this trip taking in the sights. We spent a great morning at the Spanish Royal Palace. I especially liked the armoury, which had a great display of weapons and armour, including some fully armoured horses. The Spanish Royal Palace also had several Stradivarius violins and cellos (very cool!). We also saw several art galleries. One of the galleries held Picasso’s Guernica, one of his more famous works. The Guernica was huge! About 2m tall, and about 4m ... read more

Good Afternoon my loyal readers, You've all waited so patiently for me to update you, so it's about time I rewarded your patience... Where to start, where to start... It's been so long... Let's start with my current circumstances and work from there. I'm still living with Jo in our little apartment in Limehouse (near Canary Wharf). We have one flatmate, Duncan, who is a friend of Jo's from New Zealand. I recently started work at Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) as part of their Science Quality Team. My office is in Westminster, so I walk past Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben every day. Not quite as nice as my view in Nelson, but it could be worse. Jo and I do a lot of travelling when we can ... read more

Today I ventured into Eastern London, Canary Wharf. This is the Wall Street NYC area of London that is beginning to really boom in the economic world. There are skyscrapers (well, sort of, for London at least) and underneath the shiny buildings is mall after mall and shop after shop. The point was to take my High School Skills class on a field trip. Uh yes, I took kids from Dubai, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Spain, and Texas on the train and the tube. Interesting to say the least. We first visited the Dockland Museum. How you must wonder, did we tie this into our class??? Well, there was a Jack the Ripper exhibit which was gruesome. And of course a scaled model of the Old London Bridge which tied math into the trip. Then we ... read more

Hello all, Touched down in London yesterday afternoon as was met with rain and lots of it - it's like i'd never left melbourne! The flight was actually ok - had some help sleeping in the ridiculously small economy class seats from my lil friend serapax - thank you dodgy gp! Before i left i was lucky enough to go the AMSA global health conference and lil bit of Convention - including spending my birthday at a thai bucket party! Both conferences were fantastic and congrats to both organising teams. My photos will hopefully be up soon. Right back to london - I'm currently staying with my brother and his fiance in canary wharf - its an awesome location and apartment, i should soak it up as for the next 5 weeks i'll be in tiny ... read more
