In yet another example of how "life isn't fair," we had a very unequal night of jet-lagged induced sleep. Ed and Lisa slept fitfully, dozing in and out all night long. Tyler, on the other hand, slept like a rock for 16 hours (must be nice to be a teenage boy!!!!). After breakfast we jumped on the Tube to Tower Hill, home to the Tower of London. Construction of the Tower began in 1066, and it has been a fixture on the Thames, and at the entrance to the City of London ever since. A Yoman Guard (or Beefeater) gave us a very informative, and surprisingly funny tour of the Tower. We then spent much of the rest of the day exploring this historic fortress. We laughed out loud when our videographer (Jeff) was commanded to ... read more

Arrived London Heathrow at 5 a.m. Cleared British Customs & Immigration and took Heathrow Express Train into the city, arriving at the bustling London Paddington Station before 6. From Paddington, we took an iconic London Cab to our apartment in Canary Wharf. We dropped our bags and began a hard-target search for breakfast (which was tougher than you would think. There are 13 million people in this city. Don't they eat breakfast?). After our appetites were satisfied, we started our exploration of the City. We took the Tube (more on the Tube later) to Westminster and visited Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. We then walked down Whitehall to Horse Guard Parade. Allison was a bit intimidated by the size of the horses, but she bravely stood next to 1 of the great ... read more

A mini holiday in London, with one of my dearest friends and her sister, presented a good reminder of our amazing Capital. It’s been years since I visited London and more years since I viewed it as a tourist.Consequently it was like going for the very first time. Staying at Greenland Dock, (named so during the 18th century, in recognition of the whaling trade), we had a tedious bus journey from Plymouth, first to Victoria bus station, and then an hour wait for another bus to Canary wharf, feeling disorientated as we got off the bus amongst the modern high rise glass buildings, the hustle and bustle of workers escaping for the Easter long weekend. From there, we found our way to the pier and caught the Thames clipper water bus to Greenland dock. (Just across ... read more

Today we got up early so we could go to Stonehenge. "Why are there no photo's of Stonehenge?", you might ask. Well that would be because by the time we got to Stonehenge, it felt like we were in the middle of a hurricane. Let me back up to the beginning of our day....The morning started out as a fairly calm day. We arrived in the lobby of our hotel about an hour before we had to be at the "meeting" point for our bus to Stonehenge. We innocently ask the front desk clerk the best way to get to the meeting point on time. He sort of grimaced at us and said, "You didn't really give yourself a lot of time". At this point, we realize we are probably going to miss the tour if ... read more

At around 8:30am (London Time) we arrived in England. We were funneled into customs and sat in line for about an hour while 5 people processed about 250 people waiting in line. The customs agent asked us a lot of questions about why were visiting London, so I can only image how long it took others who were not on holiday. Finally we make it out of customs and luckily our car was still waiting for us even though we were about an hour and a half later than we thought. Unfortunately, our driver was relying on his GPS to get us to the hotel and the GPS did not account for all of the "closed" roads because of the weekend. It took us another hour and a half to get to our hotel. The good ... read more

With our one year wedding anniversary fast approaching we couldn’t help but get excited when Nikki found out that the London ice sculpting festival was on from 13th-14th January literally just over the road from where she works. The last time we saw ice sculptures was at our wedding at the Ice Hotel in Sweden. Being that it is January and I’m trying to lose some “Christmas weight” I decided to cycle to Canary Wharf to meet Nikki for lunch so we could see some of the sculptures and to see what other activities they might have on. After the scariest bike ride I have ever been on (6 lanes of traffic on the motorway) I arrived in Canary Wharf. Although I am a born and bred Londoner I don’t think I have ever been to ... read more

Had some visitors this weekend, my sisters with their partners, Johanna and Anders and Victoria and Gustaf and My cousins Rebecca and Carl Johan and Malin (Malin is CarlJohan’s partner). We had such a good time. Lovely weather and just taking it easy and doing whatever we wanted. On Friday we spent the day or the Thames, we went to the O2 area, Greenwich and Canary Wharf then we have a great dinner at our local restaurant. On Saturday we walked along the Thames from Surrey Quays to Westminster. And in the evening we went for a meal at a French restaurant on New Oxford Street. Sunday just relaxing and having lunch together. Thank you for coming over to visit us Per and I had a great time and we definitely have to arrange something for ... read more

Hello bloggers!! So I have now left work and am officially unemployed woooohoo! Never thought I would be celebrating unemployment ha. Had a lovely last day, got champagne, gift vouchers and cake (they know me so well!) and apparently my manager was about to cry! Ahhhh i'm going to miss them. Feels a bit weird but i will (sadly) probably be back there when i'm done cruising the world. Had quite an stressful day today trying to pack!! There literally isn't enough space for all the things i need.. doesn't help that i want to bring half the pharmacy with me. Think i may be a touch hypochondric - did i just make that up? I'm torn between whether I should take all the things I want and suffer the pain of carrying a bag the ... read more

And sorry, Olde Ireland. We intended to get there but we thought the place probably deserves a proper going over and we ran out of time for that this trip. A big one for the Comeback List is that one. People planning to visit Great Britain are best advised to brush up on their history. Get your English kings and queens in order, brush up on the key features of Tudor, Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian, even Brutalist architecture, have a bit of scan through the various invasions of the country or its parts and get yourself up to date with the wars it has fought with others and itself. As a visitor you will have a much better time of it when you are picking through a field of stones or wandering through an old town if ... read more
