BILLY ELLIOT - BILLY SHAKESPEARE DOUBLE HEADER Today had a bit of a thespian theme, but before that we had a bit of fun taking the Tube from Paddington to the Central City in rush (crush) hour. It probably not on most people’s top 10 things to do in London and if you have personal space issues it’s definitely something to avoid at all costs – it was however an interesting experience to say the least! We were packed in like sardines yet at each stop people seemed to find room for extras, and somehow if people needed to get off at a stop they found a way to get to the exit doors. Not something I would like to do every day and we’ll probably avoid peak time travel in the future. In general the ... read more

Tourist 101 Today was our first full on 'be a tourist' day, also our first experience with the London Transport system. Before leaving NZ we purchased a London Pass with Travel option this gives us unlimited travel on the Tube and entry to 55 of London's main attractions (not all the best ones are covered - London Eye and Madam Tausards being the major omissions). The Tube is great, even for us complete novices it was really easy to work out, and it makes getting around the city incredibly easy. To kick off our day we took Tube from Paddington to Charring Cross and had a walk around Trafalgar Square area. The actual Square was being set up for a concert so was a bit of a construction zone so we didn't set it in its ... read more

Today was deliberately left with no specific things to do as we weren't sure what if any effect jet lag would play. In the end though it was a really productive day. We explored Hyde Park, stumbled on Buckingham Palace just when the changing of the guard was about to take place, and found ourselves a 'local' for a pint. Not a bad days work at all. HYDE PARK Is a massive green sanctuary smack in the middle of one of the worlds busiest cities. Its a real mixture - perfectly manicured in some areas (Princess Diana tribute fountain as an example), a bit rustic and wild in other areas (long grass and random trees), a lake, well used walking/running and biking paths galore. I guess you could argue most cities/towns have something similar - but ... read more

DAY 1 At 5pm on Saturday we were sitting have a 'last supper' with the kids at the Southern Cross in Wellington. Watching driving winds and horizontal rain lashing anyone or anything in its path, wondering if Wellington Airport would be closed and our big adventure would fall at the first hurdle. FAST FOWARD a day to 5pm Sunday and we were sitting in the Monkey Puzzle Westminster District London enjoying Bangers and Mash! I knew it, I'd been warned, I thought I was prepared - but STILL I ordered and award winning Badger beer off tap and the bloody thing was warm! 21 degrees and muggy and I'm sitting in a lovely beer garden drinking warm beer - the whole UK beer experience is going to be a much bigger challenge than I first anticipated! ... read more

It is Saturday here in Bayswater, London and it is going to be a good one. Yesterday morning we took a jog through Hyde Park, which is by far my most favorite place here in the city. It is such an escape from the busy life with all the trees, ponds, and puppies! We then jumped on the Tube over to South Kensington for a Dooner. Yelp informed us that it was one of the best in the city, Miles figured it would be in the budget and delicious so I was on board. Kensington is a magical place filled with white buildings and black doors. It is clear that more of the posh, and well to do live here. The Dooner was delicious, located in a tiny shop that many may just pass up, we ... read more

We made it to London, we have settled currently at the Byron Hotel that is a street away from Hyde Park. It is currently 8:16 PM, but we do not have Internet at the hotel, so this will be posted at a later date. Miles and I have enjoyed a “Pub” lunch, included with a pint of beer and a stroll through Hyde Park. Mom you would of been impressed with the Fish ’n’ Chips, really hit the spot. The walk was shortened once we realized that Hyde park could take an hour (on the small side) round trip to figure out exactly where and which way we need to go. The park feels like a less developed Central Park, only they have a merry-go-round, and therefore automatically wins the awesome award. We made it back ... read more

A place where dreams are built and realised; or so I've always believed. On my first trip to London, the buzzing city with that awesome vibe, with its magnificant old buildings, its tree lined streets and black taxi cabs, it surely didn't dissapoint. This made me happy. I guess the fact that I reunited with mum and dad ensured I had a great time. It wasn't as 'Hollywood' as I'd expected it to be...the reunion that is. After my few sicknesses in South America (which led to yes I'll admit a tinge of homesickness) and months away I thought I'd get quite emotional, that they might be a littl emotional but it was all very civil. There was no running towards each other with open arms, no dropping of the bags to do so; this was ... read more

The last 36 hours have been a whirlwind of emotions. I was seen off by my 2 besties - Frank and Yuni along with there other halves. And what a send off it was, we were eating Pork Rolls by the side of the street in Mascot. And we even have Frank squatting whilst eating, showing off his viet heritage! After my last meal in Sydney Yuni and Rob dropped me off at the airport where I had to say Goodbye to my bestie for 7 weeks - until we meet again in Singapore! I must say, it was alot harder than I thought. We always go away and its never really affected me like this. Maybe cos Europe was supposed to be 'our' thing to do together...who knows, but I must say that was one ... read more

No one speaks English and everything’s broken – Tom Waits Trains are great places for reflecting (if you can stop yourself nodding off to the rocking). Am on eurostar. At the risk of being a know-all aussie abroad, the following observations spring to mind about England and France. Newcastle’s multiculturalism is very European. You immediately notice the difference when you get to Sydney. Sydney is polyglot. England and France are similar. When we got on the metro this evening there was a young girl wearing full fitted head scarf. She also had on skin tight jeans, was wearing rings and spent most of her time on her mobile phone. Her friend was a young woman of African descent. There was no doubting this young girl's religious conviction. Equally there was no doubting her membership of the ... read more
