Durham Oriental Museum is a bit of a walk from the city centre. The website suggested two different routes and I opted for the prettier one, walking along the River Wear. I headed to Framwellgate Bridge, which is the main bridge from the west in the centre of Durham. Since it was early, there was only one family taking selfies with the view of the castle and the cathedral in the background. The bridge dates back to the 15th century, replacing one built earlier in the 12th century for the Bishop of Durham. The views of the castle and the cathedral's towers was beautiful, I love that they just poke out from all the trees surrounding them. I only wish it had been a sunny day as it was rather overcast, but the British weather is ... read more

The celebrated author, Bill Bryson, described Durham in glowing terms. "I thought it was perfect when I first saw it - I still think so now" were the words he used. "The city of Durham is an intensely beautiful and historic place. There is so much history there but what makes it so special is that it appreciates that history - it looks after it and does positive things with it". Bryson stumbled upon Durham by chance, when writing his Notes From A Small Island book. He went on to become Chancellor of the University between 2005 and 2011. The new University library still bears his name. On a day that saw Dominic Cummings take to the stage once again in pursuit of revenge against TFB, Durham seemed an appropriate place to be. It was after ... read more

Sunday was a rush day . We were trying to cross the T's and dot the I's with our house sale . We had sat on the furnishings and fittings list before taking time to fill them in . We signed all the contracts and got everything ready to drop at the conveyancer. With the rider not to rush things. She had put more stuff in the post for our purchase . Contacts to fill in and sign and permission to do the surveys and searches . We dropped everything off and warned her to take her time . We copied passports and driving licences . Little did we know on this warm sunny Sunday morning at the start of yet another Covid week that she would ignore everything we said and that our world would ... read more

From Langley Park To Memphis. I often draw inspiration from music for a blog title. It could be a line in a song or an album title and it doesn't even need to be from a band with whom I have some affinity. The title seemed appropriate for another wander around County Durham. The 1988 vinyl by the Prefab Sprout gang might have fallen off the radar somewhat, but is still credible 30 odd years on. The last County Durham blog on the heels of the "Senior Advisor", saw us pass the milestone of 70,000 hits in total. Thank you to everyone, who has taken the trouble to read, view or even look at the odd photograph. Lockdown has had many negatives, but a lack of time wasn't one. I hear the cries of anguish from ... read more

They say, if you fall off a horse, it is best to get straight back on. Is it for our benefit to overcome our natural fear or is to show the horse, we are in charge? I currently feel like I have fallen of the mythical travelblog horse. It has been nearly 5 months now and I haven't so much as written a single word, except in an employment setting or taken the camera out of the case. COVID 19 has meant it hasn't been possible to journey far for quite a significant period and even if you did, there wasn't a great deal to do at any destination. There was certainly no football to watch and anybody who has read any of my previous blogs will realise that has a significant impact on my life. ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome. She is having well earned rest in the car park of the Masons Arms. Unlike Europe our own small isle does not cater for motorhomers. Caravan and Motorhome Club sites are well out of the way . Suitable for tuggers but not for us in vans. They are expensive . Over £25 a night . Not something you want to pay when you have paid a lot of cash for a lithium battery and do not need electricity. Just a bit of hardstanding. Their members book up the sites for months on end so even if you wanted to get it they would be full . The Camping Club - the friendly one offers cheaper nights of around £15 but even so they are still not what we ... read more

It is well over 2 years since my meandering in the North East took me to Bishop Auckland. I am on my usual train heading out of the NEPSR. The views from the window are largely unchanged, but the same cannot be said of the local political landscape. The train had filled up a bit by Redcar - or as TFB recently quipped giving it a new title, "Bluecar". The town has recently hit the headlines by joining the political revolution, that has seen a swing in trust towards those who pedal an oven ready deal to take back control of UK borders. The locals appear to have forgotten the demise of their steelworks and overlooked that there was no effective surge of empathy arriving from the political power brokers to save the day. The idle ... read more

A lot has changed on Teesside in the last three decades. The steel river no longer sees much steel these days and most of what it does, probably arrives on a HGV from Scunthorpe. The plant on the edge of the Tees at Redcar is now mothballed and closed forever and only a few specialist parts of the business remain. Football has changed too. The Ayresome Park gang became the Awesome Park gang and a generation grew up using the words, “The Riverside” and “Stadium”. Big name players came and went, adding to their wealth and skill set by acquiring the ability to throw a dart and refer to their Other Half as “our lass”. There was a buzz about on matchdays back then, but nothing much was stirring for the arrival of Charlton Athletic today ... read more

I normally venture further afield at this time of the year. Alas, circumstances dictated that the Other Half had caring responsibilities and I was once again destined to be bound for County Durham. I surveyed the map and realised that I was running out of destinations of note that were achievable by public transport. The bus pulled into Sedgefield, which didn’t look as prosperous as last time I passed through. It hasn’t been in the headlines recently, but was once quite prominent as the parliamentary seat of former PM, Tony Blair. He even brought the then President, George W Bush, for some grub in the Dun Cow in 2003. The “C” had slipped on one of pub signs, so I guessed they weren’t expecting any Presidents today. I would watch the TV news later only to ... read more

We arrived at Newcastle airport just before lunch time and after raiding an ATM, we made our way to the Airport Metro Station and caught the first train to Newcastle Central. It was very humid in Newcastle and around 28 degrees. From the metro station below Newcastle Central, we climbed the escalators up into the Railway Station where we were confronted with mayhem. Lightning from a thunderstorm had knocked out a train bunch of signals in Yorkshire so the trains heading south to London were all cancelled. We needed to catch any one of those trains for our 25 minute ride south down to Darlington where our Campervan awaits. Amongst all the bedlam at the station, we talked to some railway customer service people who told us to jump onto the train on platform 2 which ... read more
