Geo: 54.7674, -1.57948I had some time before my train so I stuck my bag in a locker and went for a walk. Leaving the hostel, I noticed a huge line-up of people checking out - glad that I managed to check out before all of them. I was also glad that I booked my train ticket online - it only cost me 10 GBP, but could have cost me 50 GBP if I bought it direct from the ticket office. I tried going to the Museum on the Mound, but it wasn't open yet so I took a quick walk down the Royal Mile and went to the Museum of Scotland again. Its terrace is supposed to have great views, but it was closed yesterday due to the weather. And again ... it was closed ... ... read more

Untitled This is the first day of our adventure….and what do you know we start with a flight delay. All good though, because it gave us more time for sushi and to hang out with the family. Sushi was excellent and we made it back to the airport for about 8:20, and we were told to go through security at 8:30. Well I’m kinda paranoid about missing flights, so I go and check the flight on the big screens, and there is no sign of a flight delay so the flight is on time and still leaving at 8:35. My stomach drops, and of course I run back to James in a frantic state…..its 8:30! So we clear customs and I bust running to the gate….I kinda left James at security too.  Of course we ... read more

Yis, we are back home after our trip of a lifetime. We have:- tramped glaciers, kayaked on fiords, camped under koalas, gasped at the wonders of nature on The Ocean Road, also gasped at the smells of nature in NZ(Rotorua, not my feet), been close up and personal with steaming thermal pools and mud, zoomedto the top of the Skytower in Auckland ( and watched in amazement as people bungee jumped off the top), gazed in wonder in gloworm caves, built hot water baths on the beach, seen herds(is that what a lot are called) of kangaroos grazing on an Oz golfcourse, sweltered in amazing Hong Kong and travelled on the Hopper bus from Durham to home to finish our holiday. We hope you have enjoyed our blog as much as we have enjoyed our ... read more

Durham Europe » United Kingdom » England » Durham » Durham By lgh5000March 2nd 2007My Dad came to visit, and our first trip was to Durham. It was a really cute city, with cobblestone winding streets. :) Sadly, the castle was closed to the public that day, but we were able to go into the Cathedral, and it was gorgeous! I also found out that it is where some of Harry Potter was taped :) yay! lol. ... read more

Geo: 54.7682, -1.76455After getting back from our trip to Scotland, I went to meet my great aunt Veronica, and some other assorted family members. The following day i did very little but rest up and go along to a place called Finchale Priory, a ruined monk residence just ouside of Durham.Saturday afternoon, Joe, Maureen and I travelled to the Metro centre for a few hours, having Nandos for lunch!! woo, following this we headed out to Hadrians wall. It was about a half an hours drive, but well worth it. Hadrians Wall was built all across northern england by the romans around 120AD to keep the raging Scots at bay. Was some fantastic historical info to soak in, and impressive sights to see of the wall and Roman relics.Saturday night, I went out into Durham on my ... read more

Geo: 54.7911, -1.76455Well for everyone back home, especially in Melbourne, you must know of Sovereign Hill. You know, the touristy place that tries to educate about Old School Australia, and the Gold Rush. Well basically, Beamish open air museum is the English equivalent. Instead of the gold rush however, its all about Coal Mines, and old English farms, and towns, and steam.I arrived there with Joe, at around quarter past ten in the morning. Our Beamish experience started with a hardhat tour down an drift coal mine shaft. Its really amazing to consider the way men in this area would have worked back in the early 19th Century, even as late as 1970. The conditions were harsh, and one can only imagine the thousands of medical conditions and issues that may have come about as a ... read more

Geo: 54.7911, -1.76455Now a day of rest in Durham. Well kinda. Its Sunday afternoon. I got up early this morning for a soccer game!! to play in. I managed to get the guy who took us to the Sunderland match yesterday, to allow me to play in a 5 a side match, just near Darlington. Was great fun, how ive missed playing soccer!! its been over 6 weeks now, maybe more. We won the match 16-6, on like a basketball court sized field. I scored 8 goals, and hit the woodwork 4 or 5 times, and set up quite a few :)Tomorrow, we are heading off to a "English Sovreign Hill" type place, like an old fashioned tourist english town, and Scotland the day after that!! hoorah!NOTE:There are more photos on the way... from the second ... read more

Arrived in Newcastle in the late afternoon, and was picked up by uncle once removed Joe. Ill probably be staying here for around about a week id say. Joe ane Maureen have been heaps hospitable, and im sure itl be a pleasure to stay here. I just hope they feel the same about me hehe.
