National Railway Museum
Practice for our train trip? Not a chance! I'll be inside the carriage enjoying the scenery! Hiya everyone.
I've got a few days to catch up with I guess. So here goes.
12 May - Today we headed to York for the day to see the National Railway Museum. It was really interesting with engines from the steam era up to diesels. We had a good wander round and lost Barbara a few times.. lol... The Flying Scotsman wasn't on display because it's being done up ready to get out onto the tracks again. There were a few royal carriages there including Queen Victoria's, Queen Elisabeth's and the one that Charlse and Diana used afer they got married. Queen Victoria's was amazing and still in original condition. It was a bit hard to get pictures of it because they didn't have very bright lights on inside it. The UV rays from the bulbs was destroying the fabric.
After we finished in the museum we headed to the York Minster. We were going to go inside and have a good look around but they wanted 9 pound each to go in, but there was a funeral on as well and it didn't seem right to go sightseeing. On the way back to the car Mark bought me
York
I'm not sure what this building is, but I just really like the look of it. a new bead for my bracelet. It's a little viking and is so cute. lol We headed back to Hull then.
13 May. We didn't do much on Friday. We went to the laundry and did some washing then just hung around. I didn't want to do too much because I was heading out on a girls night and wanted to be able to keep up with them all. I had to show us Aussies can handle the pace even if I was the oldest.. lol I went out with Lisa (little sister), Deb (cousin), Hayley (she's Uncle Tony's niece so therefore at 12.30am we decided she was related to me as well!), and Nicky (Lisa's bestie). We ended up going to 9 pubs and I had at least 1 vodka and coke in each one... though I do seem to remember at a couple of bars I might of had 2. Mark and Naj came to pick us up at about 1am. It was a definate eye opener, with lots of oldies there and plenty of mutton dressed as lamb!! lol I had a great night!
14 May - Steve and Tracy volunteered to host a birthday
Beamish Hall
Built in 1268. party for Mark at their house in the afternoon. We had a BBQ and Steve and his lovely neigbour Jim did a wonderful job cooking all that meat on such a small barbie and the webber.. lol It was a real shame about the rain but it was a great afternoon. Heaps of the family came and I got to meet Steve's other son Kris and his daughter Emma and her son Jack. Oh and the cake was great, Mark just told me today that he's never had a birthday cake where he's had to blow out the candles... so that was wonderful for him. Thanks to everyone for making it a lovely day for Mark. xxxx
15 May - Today we went to see Uncle Ralph and Aunty Gillian. We went to a carvary for lunch and met up with another cousin, Bruce. It was a fantastic meal, huge of course, and we had a lovely time. It was great to see Bruce again after so long. We went back to Uncle Ralphs for coffee and spent a few hours with them. We had a lovely afternoon 😊 xxx
16 May - This morning we've driven up
Beamish Hall
If you look to the far right of the photo, the ground floor.. last two windows... our room... brilliant... should see the size of the bathroom.. ohhh that's right you can!! I'll take a pic and add it later! haha to Beamish, which is near Newcastle. It was about 2.5 hours away from Hull and a nice drive. We told Jane (our Tom-Tom lady) to avoid the motorways so we went on a few back roads which was nice. It's a bit rainy today and as the afternoon has progressed it's gotten very windy and quite chilly. We've booked into a place called Beamish Hall for the night. It's abeautiful building that was originally built in 1268 as a wedding present. It was occupied by the same family, the Charron/Monbouchers for 5 generations until the last family member died in 1400. It's had various lives including a live in school, Head Office for the Mid-West Durham Area of the National Coal Board and a place to store archives for the Beamish Museum. Aparently there's a couple of ghosts around the halls and rooms (Yeah right says Mark.. lol) so if I see any I'll let you know tomorrow.. lol
We've been in to the Beamish Open Air Museum and had a good wander round. It very well done and we had a lovely time. There are people there in period costume and they tell you about the buildings they
Beamish Open Air Living Museum
Main St. Mark looks a little chilly.. it was very windy and a bit cold. So much for summer! are in. It's baby time at the moment and there was cute lambs and calves around. The pigs came up for a scratch, though the cows were a bit stand-offish..lol We think that tomorrow morning, before we head back to Hull, we'll go to the Birds of Prey centre that's behind the hotel.
Well that's about it for now... over the next couple of days we'll be visiting with family before we head off to pick up the narrow boat, so there won't be a lot to report in with, but we will keep in touch.
Love to all xxxx
