Kevin with the dog Jessie went on a walk near here across the estuary and they walked all the way to the open sea.came back across the estuary and water was coming in quick.Jessie swam across and Kevin had water to his knee!!! they loved it. Today we went to Dartmouth on the river Dart, they had ferries going to different places and lovely quaimt shops ,it was 25 miles from home through beautiful countryside. Es ... read more

Our original plan was to travel further west along the coast of the UK, but we had to do some hard thinking about this as time was moving on. We had been told of other places to visit and that the Sicily Isles were wonderful, but that you had to be sure of a good weather window to do so. We hadn’t been having the best of weather and we had also wanted to travel east from Dartmouth where we first hit this coastline. In weighing everything we decided it was time to turn around and head east. Fortunately we had been in touch with some friends of ours, Leslie & Gary from SV Spellbound and heard that they were actually further east and would be getting to Dartmouth about the time we could be there. ... read more

Yes, this blog entry includes the last of Dartmouth, but also another quick trip to Exeter. We hadn’t planned on going again, but we found that we needed to look for a couple of things that we thought we could get in Exeter so took another bus trip there. Unfortunately even though the websites of the stores stated they carried what we needed, they didn’t have the items in stock – oh well. Our additional hope was that as long as we were in Exeter again we could get into the guildhall and the museum that we didn’t make it to the last time. It definitely was not a wasted trip as we managed to succeed with both! There are recorded mentions of the Exeter Guildhall as early as 1160, but the building we visited was ... read more

Our sail from Guernsey to Dartmouth, UK was a pleasant one and actually took less time than we had projected due to our help from the current. We set sail from Guernsey at 8:15AM and docked in Dartmouth by 8 PM. We try to plan a passage so we can get into a new port during daylight – it is always great when the tides give us an extra boost. Our only real “close encounter” on our trip over was when Bob was on the helm and Janice was down resting. Bob saw a freighter coming and was watching it closely. It got to the point that he felt he should call them on the radio which he did. The freighter reassured Bob that we would be OK and that he would pass us without a ... read more

We went to the picturesque seaside town of Dartmouth, where Dartmouth Naval College is. This town is very charming. It was within this port that so many ships sank. There were so many sunken, scattered ships that it was said you could walk across the harbor from one side to the other without touching the water. It makes it hard to imagine considering the breathtaking images (and homes) I saw lining the harbor today. John used up his entire camera battery taking photographs. There were hundreds of worthwhile images to capture! No matter where we are each day, come the afternoon we stop for afternoon tea. John has thoroughly adopted this tradition. He enjoys the full experience, complete with scones, clotted cream and jam. Reagan has been a trooper through her jet lag, no naps and ... read more

Just a short one this time. After a few hectic days packing, getting rid of stuff, making room for tools, getting paperwork sorted for travels and saying goodbye to family and friends I sat down this evening, the eve of our departure, for a quiet moment. When staring out to sea and seeing the sun glittering off the water and the boats sailing aroiund I felt inspired to write... so I grabbed the pen and notebook (thanks Liz!) and this is what I wrote.... Sunset at Sea... Sea shimmers, splashes, splishes, slowly slithers by, Spectrums sparkle sporadically, sun splits sultry sky, Surrendering to solitude, smooth ships silently fly. That's all for now folks, next time I post it will be from Guernsey or Cherbourg...thanks again for all the wonderful messages, gifts, cards, flowers and good luck ... read more

A day out in Dartmouth to experience a production of BBC One's Antiques Roadshow at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in Devon. Lynne, George, Emma and I headed for Dartmouth with Emma's marble clock that needed a couple of us to load it into the car. Due to the strict security measures at the college we had to take the Park and Ride into the base which meant getting out the stacker truck, tying the clock onto it and then heaving it onto the shuttle bus after being frisked by the security guards in the car park. Upon arrival at the college we were directed into the queue which at this stage was over 100 metres long. However, the sun was shining and everyone in the queue was feeling good natured so the waiting wasn't ... read more

Well, we haven't begun our trip yet, but in the glorious sunshine on the Dart and the fact that both of us have already finished work in our heads, we may as well have begun our adventure. Tonight we decided to do an upmarket BBQ to trial our newest purchase again - a lovely stainless steel boat BBQ which has more than a passing resemblance, in my opinion, to a UFO. I procured king scallops, parma ham, tuna steaks fresh fruit and salad on the way home and lovingly prepared parma ham wrapped scallops on kebabs with huge chunks of mango and pineapple. I would like to tell you how succulent and juicy this culinary delight was ... however, I never even got to eat it! As Mike traversed to the bow (boat word for 'front' ... read more

Coleton Fishacre is a National Trust treasure tucked away in the back and beyond of South Devon. In the Spring and Summer the gardens are magical with viewpoints of the sea spread out amongst the mature shrubs and trees imported from all over the world. The house is in complete harmony with the gardens and was the holiday home of Rupert D'Oyly Carte and his family in the 1920s. The Arts & Crafts-style house has an Art Deco-influenced interior and to me the main attraction is the Salon. Standing in this Art Deco influenced room one is taken back to that moment in time when the D'Oyly Cartes probably entertained their friends and family with the grand piano in the corner playing its part. When we heard that the National Trust was organising an afternoon of ... read more
