Small and simple pleasures - These are the thoughts that forever go through your mind when you lie in bed waiting for sleep to come . They are the thoughts that go through my mind when I wake. I am sure it is a feeling that everyone knows. Simple pleasures the words kept going through my mind. Staying in bed as long as I wanted to . If it were not a working day I could stay in as long as I wanted to. But that would mean a wasted day . A day I would not get back if I wasted it. Simple pleasures of the sun streaming through the bedroom windows. Breakfast taken slowly. A hot steaming cup of coffee . A day ahead to do what I wanted . As little as possible ... read more

Days 119 and 120. Saturday we watched the qualification for Motor GP. It is not a normal Motor GP . Then it never was going to be normal . . Two GP's one after the other in Spain. No crowds. Masks . A GP without an audience . It lacked any kind of atmosphere. Then there is F1. Masks, no crowds and two races in Austria. One called the Austrian Grand Prix and the second the Styrian GP. Two or three people sitting on a grassy bank watching proceedings . Is this the new normal? Walking as exercise . Is this the new normal? Will folks continue walking when things get back to "normal"? Who knows? So many questions went through my mind as my feet walked their walk. It feels like there is less to ... read more

Thursday - an odd day. I don't shop on a Thursday do I? Not normally . Wednesday or Saturday . Regular as clockwork. We were feeling a little down after our visit to Wales . We always feel that way. We had had our fix but that fix just makes us want more . It sets off the travelling bug. The itch that won't go away. The itch that at the moment you cannot scratch properly. It is shopping day and work day . I wondered if the shop would be busier or quieter than on a Wednesday. I was soon to find out. The weather was marginally better than yesterday. And Boris is giving us a big announcement today . That is something to get excited about . I did not walk this morning . ... read more

So where do you do your best thinking? In bed ? On a walk? When you cook breakfast? I lay in bed thinking. The sun was coming up and I was thinking - will it be a lovely day today? Will it rain again? It was hard to tell as it was early and morning had not quite broken . Would I get out for my walk today? Or would the rain defeat me as it has done on a few days? So what day of the week was it? It was Monday morning and I had the day and the week ahead of me. It is partial lockdown now . Boris has spoken and we are heading for a bit more freedom. We can go out more. We can travel more. We can get into ... read more

So where in the world are the intrepid travellers ? Not far. We are standing on a patch of scrubby ground on Hassocky Lane . Glenn is leaning against a gate which proudly tells us not to park there as access is needed at all times. It does not look from the state of the rusty chain and lock that anyone has used that gate for some while. I stand at the side of him pacing back and forward . We have a view across the field . The colour of late summer yellow. The path runs down the field into trees and beyond that we see the crooked spire of Chesterfield church . You cannot miss it from this height . Not that this part of Derbyshire is high but it is slightly higher than ... read more

"The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in one dewdrop on the grass " Dogen - Funny how rain can either enhance your day or ruin it. I love rain. Not the bucketloads that sometimes fall out of a leaden sky. But that was what Hump day gave me . Not that lovely drizzle of April showers from a light coloured sky. No it was the sort of rain that drenches you . Wet and heavy and the sort that lingers all day long. It is weather that we have experienced over the last few days. Day 109 - a day of more than a drop of rain and Day 110 of lockdown which gave me more of the same. The sort of Wednesday and Thursday morning were you poke your head out of ... read more

Week 15 - the start of another week . I think it is week 15. Days 107 and 108 are upon us. I read my quote off the calendar this morning and it was one I had read before . A walk of a thousand miles starts with one step . I guess when you produce a calendar every year eventually you run out of new things to write . It is a good one though and I really did not mind reading it again. My walk starts and ends at the back door at the moment . I have walked nearly four times the route of Hadrians Wall . I must be heading a long way across France in my imaginary walk. I suppose my back door is as good a place to start as ... read more

Day 106 Sunday - the church bells are still quiet . The churches are open now for services I think . But services without singing . Can you imagine that ? A church without music is like Liberace without his silver candlesticks . With Morecombe without Wise . Music always makes a church . When abroad singing or chanting , even piped music gives a church its atmosphere. Weddings are on again but with limited numbers. Is that a bad thing? Might scale down those lavish over the top events of 300 guests or more . It is a horrible day . Nothing like July . Cold , miserable , slightly wet and dreary . And then there is the wind . Blowing through the trees . Not the sort of morning for a walk . ... read more

Facts and figures - do you love them? I do . The driver does too. Fact 1 - this is the 156th blog I have written about Derbyshire . I never imagined I would write so many about Derbyshire and Chesterfield whilst still sitting at home. It is Day 105 of lockdown or partial lockdown . I have probably walked 103 days and still counting. I have lost count of so many things . I bet you have too. Staying at home has that effect. Losing track of days, dates , events . It is Saturday . The weekend and the 4th July . Our American friends and relatives will be celebrating their release from the British yoke . For us the 4th July has a very different meaning . Today no doubt Independence Day means ... read more

Have you noticed how it is that one thing leads to another ? It is Day 102 - days behind but things have overtaken me and writing to my blog/diary have gone by the by. Day 102 was a funny old day. A busy day. A bad news day. A day of Covid Blue thoughts some though were happy thoughts . Who would have thought the day would go the way it did ? Not me . Today started off as just another day. The same as yesterday . No doubt the same as tomorrow . As I lay in bed I was not expecting the day to be any different to any other . We wouldn't be going anywhere . We were still stuck at home . I had a walk planned depending on the ... read more
