April 28, 2012 – Heading South Today we are on the road, heading south to Dover. We stayed in Carlisle last night, which was situated at the top end of the Lakes District. Pretty countryside, but Carlisle itself was fairly ordinary. It had the obligatory castle and cathedral, and a reasonably nice shopping district – we had a look through the cathedral, which housed a very impressive collection of silver church artifacts and some Roman artifacts, as well as the most beautiful pipe organ I've ever seen. The cathedral architecture was impressive. That said, we were out of Carlisle fairly early this morning – the trip to Dover is fairly long (by UK standards) so we wanted to ensure that we have some time to look around Dover before heading to Margate tomorrow to meet my ... read more

Sailing the High Seas The time has come to leave mainland Europe! Unfortunately the agreement between the Aussie Government and the European Union is to allow Aussies to stay in Europe for only 3 months. I can return once I spend 3 months outside of the Schengen countries – which is the majority of Europe. I was left with two options; go home and settle back into normal life, or go back to England and make the most of my UK visa that expires in May 2013. I’m not quite homesick yet, plus I came to terms with missing out on summer (what summer?), so I chose the latter! To date I have explored Europe by many modes of transport; bus, car, plane, train, tram, raft and foot. There was only one mode left; ... read more

Today is our last day in Scotland and another chapter in our adventure will soon come to a close. Today finds us in Falkirk on a drizzly morning on our way to the famous Falkirk Wheel. This ingenious Scottish invention was developed to enable boats to use the Firth and Clyde, and Union canals without using traditional locks to lift them the 35 metre difference in level. We arrived at The Wheel just in time to buy our tickets and board the next tour boat. It was full of older local people on a day’s bus tour. As we started our boat trip we overheard one elderly lady say, “I thought we were only coming to see The Wheel, not ride it”. We had the usual safety message which mentioned there was no point in looking ... read more

This morning we had a train to catch at 9.12am from Keighley Station to Carlisle so, with military precision, we were all organised and ready to leave the house by a quarter past eight. It is only a few miles from Haworth to, but we didn't know how heavy peak hour traffic between the two might be and we didn't want to miss out on a car park at the station. So, we were parked and purchasing our tickets from the ticket office before 8.30am!! And then the train didn't arrive until 9.30am due to signalling faults!! Still, way better to be killing time at the station reading trashy English newspapers, than stressing out in traffic worrying about missing the train. The point of our journey today was to ride the historic Settle Carlisle Railway and ... read more

The chairman of Carlisle United, Andrew Jenkins, has said he would "welcome an approach" by rap star Jay-Z to buy the club. The music mogul's publicist confirmed to BBC Radio Cumbria that he is thinking of moving into the football business. Mr Jenkins, chairman of the League One side and avid hip-hop fan, said he "is bustin’ and pumped to the max at the thought of a homie like Jay-Z coming north-west-side and he would willingly fly to New York to meet him to discuss a purchase, if Carlisle Airport ever started making trans-Atlantic flights". Jay-Z, reportedly worth £360m, held talks over investing in the club during a visit to Wetheriggs Pottery earlier this month. It’s thought that his wife, mega star Beyonce, fell in love with the warm people of Cumbria. In an article ... read more

Friday 26th June In Hog Heaven on the rails between Settle and Carlisle We seemed to have saved some of the trips that we had thought about taking during our time in Settle, way before we left home on this adventure. And today we would be immersing ourselves in part of railway history in England as we rode the historic and very scenic line between Settle and Carlisle. Whilst we wouldn’t be riding in a carriage pulled by a steam engine that does periodically happen on this line we would still be travelling over numerous viaducts and through tunnels built through some of the most difficult country that the railway goes in England. After the very full day on the road yesterday it would be relaxing sitting back and letting someone else do the driving taking ... read more

I haven't had the chance to write for awhile because I basically spent 3 days at home resting and doing sweet fuck all after the Rebellion Fest. Just reading back on my previous entries I really don't illustrate how awesome the Rebellion Fest was and how much fun I had. It's quite hard to describe seeing a band who made you sit back and think "Wow these guys rule" in more then a sentence without using sexual innuendos or writing a novel. So to get you in the mind frame, think of the best band you saw live. Times that by 4 (there Rebellion Fest was 4 days) and add getting really drunk with a bunch of awesome people. This should equal somewhere between drop kicking a midget, a bouncy castle on the moon and watching ... read more
