Getting ready for a 95 day cruise on the QM2 is quite a challenge. 27 formal nights so Dinner Jackets, and other nights requiring jackets but not necessarily ties means lots of clothes to be mix and matched..if only to keep up with Helen!... read more

D Day minus 5. Departure Day minus 5. 5 more sleeps. Whatever way you look at it there are just five days until we set off on our last European trip of the year. Destination the Iberian Peninsula. For some reason this trip seems odd. So much is going on in Europe it is hard to know what sort of trip it will become. Over the last few weeks migrants have swarmed all over the Channel tunnel complex, they have stormed the tunnel entrance . Our Prime Minister has allocated money to help the french defend the border . New fences have been erected. Migrants have been found dead in lorries which have been abandoned. The TV is full of nothing else. Hungary is overrun with Syrian migrants making their way from Turkey to what they ... read more

We had one more visit to make and that was going to be Peterborough. To get there our first move was from the site at Cambridge and to drive the hour to Peterborough to our new stop for the night at the Nene Valley Park in a Caravan Club site. It was Saturday the morning was dank and cold and there was a slight frost covering everything from the trees to the grass. Everywhere looked white and glistening in the early morning light. We left the site before most people had risen and left our barrier key in the letter box . The drive was pretty awful and we had not expected much traffic on the road so it was rather a surprise to be stuck in a traffic jam. For mile after mile we crawled ... read more

Suzy the motorhome is just starting out her adventure today. Our first trip of 2014. It started with the inevitable trip to the supermarket to buy groceries to fill up the fridge, moving her off the drive which was no mean task and filling her up with water. We set out just after lunch. The journey taking us a very different way to the Channel Tunnel. None of the half hour drive to from Wales to England and then another hour before hitting the M6. This time heading south to Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Robin Hood, Maid Marian, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Sherwood forest fame. Beyond that to Lincolnshire – flat, pig breeding country and into Rutland which was until government reorganisation in 1974 the smallest county in England. Its motto Multo en parva – something big ... read more

Sometimes you cannot believe just how quickly times passes. It was 30 days to the trip and counting. That has now dropped down to 12 days. All of a sudden it is upon us. Suzy is stuck on the drive. Hemmed in by the laurel hedge and a full skip of rubbish. Until that moves she won't be going anywhere. Holiday insurance sorted. Having dumped our previous company as they had put the premium up to £175 for the two of us for a year we decided to use that lovely company LV much loved by civil servants who are lucky enough to get deductions off premiums if they are member of the Civil Service Motoring Association. I joined last year and we saved a large amount of money changing car insurances and house insurances plus ... read more

It has been about five years since we've seen our good friend Leti and her husband Alex. Far too long for our liking!! And this is why I'm loving our trip. Shane and I got up extremely early on Saturday morning to make our way to Oundle, near Peterborough. This old market town of 5000 people is gorgeous, and is home to Oundle School, where both Leti & Alex teach. We are so lucky to have friends in such beautiful places. The school was established in 1556. Leti picked us up at the train station and we finally got to meet Emma, their daughter. What a sweetie! We found Emma at a coffee shop with Leti's friends, who were looking after her that morning as Leti and Alex had to teach. Shane and I had breakfast ... read more

Well it has finally happened. The rain held off and the day was perfect. The blessing service was held in the chapel of The Peterborough School (Victoria's old school) and the reception in a marquee of the grounds. We spent Friday and Saturday morning setting up the marquee. Vicky's Aunty Margaret supplied 130 china place settings that she has collected over the years as well as providing the flowers that decorated the tables. It all looked beautiful. Friends from all over the world gathered and enjoyed the service and reception. For those familiar with the story Victoria and Todd were married in 2009 in Las Vegas as that was where they met. For them to be together Todd needed a visa to be in England so marriage in Las Vegas was the obvious answer knowing that the ... read more

Colin and I had a grrreat weekend! It was Guy Fawkes weekend, which we found out just on Wednesday past when we heard all these fireworks going off. And when I asked what is Guy Fawkes weekend about, the standard response is: Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the parliament like hundreds of years ago but was caught before he could and then was hanged for it. Apparently this is a good reason to have festivities every year and I won't complain because it was fun. So just down the street from where we live is Midsummer Common, a big park. Friday night they had an amazing firework show...it was super long and big and high and really cool. (Colin is adament that it wasn't as good as Canada Day in Ottawa this last year however.) ... read more

So I'm cheating - I haven't left the country yet, but as I've left both jobs and am in the process of wrapping things up here, I thought I'd put my first entry on - more of a "this is what I'm leaving behind". My last day at work was strange - hadn't sunk in yet what I'm about to do but everyone was great - even people who I'd never spoken to in 6 years were wishing me well! I got loads of goodbye presents from my team - all really useful for the year ahead - but amazingly I didn't cry! (It was close a couple of times) - the two to set me off were Gail and Sarah - both renowned for it and in tradition, they roared but on the whole, it ... read more
