The first trip that I took with the ISA was to Cambridge. Approximately 70% of that town is composed of colleges, another 20% is churches, and the remaining percentage is a mix of pubs and shops. It's a lovely old place, full of gothic architecture and typical English mist. We visited King's College first, passing secret gardens and crossing bridges until we reached the main courtyard. You'll find this out soon enough, but I have a deep love for old buildings, especially old churches. The main chapel was full of intricate stone carvings and it was bisected by a tall wooden screen donated by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, supposedly a few years before he got chop-happy. There were people buried in the floor, which didn't really thrill me. I seemed to have an uncanny knack ... read more

The right companion can be the difference between a great adventure, and an amazing one. I've had multiple trips to the UK over the last couple of years, and I've had some amazing trips! Of course it always helps to have a local guide. London is an interesting mix between the depressing day to day work grind, and the bus loads of tourists seeing the sights. Don't even think about standing on the wrong site of the Tube escilator, and of course "Mind the gap". Like most cities with the hustle and bustle of work, people usually don't want to speak with strangers, and just want some peace after their daily grind. London offers so many amazing places, and has one of the best city layouts and public transportation I've ever seen. They Oyster card allows ... read more

On the train south from Darlington, I sat next to the poshest woman I have ever encountered. Her accent was the very definition of Received Pronunciation, the stereotypical uppity accent that people all over the world associate with England. It was seriously the poshest accent that ever poshed. She sounded so upper-class that while she was talking on her phone, I actually scanned the train for undercover guards, just in case. A few people I have met over here have talked about moments like this, when they can't help but wonder whether they've encountered a member or relation of the royal family in public. It was a very 'honorary Brit' moment, and the first sign that Great Britain as an entity is saying goodbye to me. The second sign occurred a few minutes into her conversation, ... read more

Geo: 52.2025, 0.131237We travelled in a group of four friends and we took the train from Kings cross to Cambridge station. From the station we headed for the Fitzwilliam museum which is my favourite museum in Cambridge. Fitzwilliam museum Fitzwilliam museum has various Artefacts from Ancient Egypt and Sudan, Greece, Rome, Cyprus and the Ancient Near East, covering many aspects of ancient life; from the thirteenth century to the present day. The exhibits are housed on the two floors and they include armoury, ceramics, furniture and paintings. I liked the Egyptian sarcophagus collection and the ancient Greece rooms. The galleries are upstairs which have the collection of Rembrandt etchings and the works from artists like Picasso, Hogarth, Wright of Derby, Monet, Rodin and many more. The antiquities are of exceptional quality; the exhibits are well preserved ... read more

Geo: 52.2025, 0.131237Cambridge, what a lovely university town. I wish it was term time though, so instead of the myriad of Chinese tourists we would have seen the students. That would have probably been a lot more fun! Anyways, the architecture of the different colleges is fascinating. They all try to be more splendid than the other! Most of them are rather famous or maybe I watched too much of University challenge. I loved that program. We went to the Wren library (part of Trinity college). We had to ask a porter for directions and we ended up chatting with him a little. We asked him how students are assigned to each college. They don't use a sorting hat, instead each student just apply for its three favorites colleges. However, for Trinity they also have to seat ... read more

England in early July. Cliff Richard singing at Wimbledon as the rain pours down on another heroic defeat by a British player. Not this year! 2013 saw sunshine, smiles and success!! We took the opportunity to visit friends in Cambridge. The weather was perfect for a stroll through the University city and a terrible attempt at punting on the river. Russ was the first to try and the steering seemed rather counter intuitive. It was completely the opposite of what he expected and a bottleneck of fellow punters combined with trying to push upstream made for hard work! James took the easier route of punting us back downstream. Aga had a go too and safely negotiated us both into and back out of a large bramble bush. Trish? Well, she just sat back and enjoyed the ... read more

Over the weekend, we stayed at a friend's home in Cambridge. It was nice to have a couple of home cooked meals, get some washing done and have some space! We were fortunate enough for the boys to have a huge rear garden to run around in, I think 4 toilets in the house and we had separate bedrooms (well, the boys had the same room, I was lucky to have my own!). We enjoyed a late lunch at The Orchard on Saturday afternoon lazily on the deck chairs... img=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JU3C9rXrxDA/UbY3d2eKvuI/AAAAAAA... read more

Remember that I had given a talk at our Norwegian partners’ client event? The other speaker there had been Michal Kosinskifrom Cambridge University. He had found my talk interesting and thus invited me to speak at Cambridge University. I was super excited! We scheduled the talk for the 31st of May, the Friday after my triathlon. And again, I did a good job in terms of self-handicapping… I arrived in Cambridge on the evening before the talk, and Michal and his colleague Vess picked me up from the bus station. They invited me to a pub and then to another pub, where some students joined us. We drank a lot of strong cider and it got really late so that I did not get a lot of sleep during the night. But somehow, my brain worked ... read more
