Lego family
On a picnic Hiya all,
Amazingly we had another nice weekend with no rain! We were just starting to get the feeling that we had somehow been transported into another country when the rain started again today (Tuesday). Now it’s raining pretty consistently and I am not looking forward to my walk home!
For your excitement and enthrallment here is the next instalment of our lives:
WORK
Well, work is work. I have survived my first month here which means I got paid - yah! So no more living on next to nothing and now we can plan some trips further abroad. My work here is still pretty quiet, although I am actually doing audit work at the moment. Last Friday I literally had nothing to do, no-one had work for me, so I was told to surf the net! Oh well, at least I got paid for it! This week though, I’m doing actual audit work. It’s still quite cruisey because they make me do all the audits of the companies which have had nothing happen in them during the year, so this morning I was able to audit 7 companies! The girl I’m working with is still working on
Daniel on his first ride on a ferris wheel
We even got the one with the lego man in it. her first company while I’ve done 13 already!
Daniel has still not been able to find work 😞 . Quite annoying really but not too much we can do about it. The UK is going through a recession (just like the rest of the world) so everyone he talks to is planning on downsizing rather then employing. So Daniel continues to hunt for jobs during the day, along with shopping, cooking and cleaning aswell. Although he did take a day off yesterday to go mountain biking, while it was still nice weather. Yes boys, I believe he is planning on sending you some further information on his adventures. If not, hound him with e-mails (we like getting e-mails from you all).
HOME
While we are settled into our little flat, it is just that, little, and I don’t think I will ever get used to having neighbours so close surrounding me. You can hear people coughing, talking, laughing, their music, the toilets flushing - it’s really strange!
We are also missing the heat from the sun, because we only have 2 windows (one in the lounge and one in the bedroom) which only get the last afternoon sun
Aeroplane Nose
Made of lego and hollow inside which doesn’t really heat the place up.
Cooking is limited, since we only have 2 stove top hobs and a microwave, and no cooking books and minimal herbs and spices. Its kind-of like living on camping food at the moment; you don’t realise how much you use your oven and cookbooks until they are gone! And the food here tastes different as-well. The beef mince is horrible and fatty, so now we’re on pork mince which tastes much nicer, and is cheaper! The cheese here is really expensive, but we love cheese, so too bad. The range of ready-made-meals is amazing - like massive rows of them! We haven’t tried any yet - I don’t think they would fill Daniel up; we’d need 4 of them just for him! The supermarkets here are even worse then Countdown back home, they have clothes (and fitting rooms), pharmacies, cafes, homeware, electronic equipment such as TV’s, cellphones etc and much more!
WEEKEND
In the weekend we went to Legoland, again. We took the train to Windsor and ended up right in front of Windsor palace, but we wasted no time looking around, and instead headed straight for Legoland, Windsor, along with
every other child in England. Yip, it was quite busy, as to be expected on a sunny weekend day, so we didn’t do too many rides as you queued for about an hour for each ride. Most of the rides were similar to the Legoland in Germany anyway.
The Legoland in Windsor had quite a few different Lego displays which were quite fun to see. They had this wall full of famous people’s heads which were all made from flat bits of lego (see the picture) - quite amazing. There was also a big motorbike (see picture), and a replica of the nose of a Boing-737. We saw the room where the lego modellers work; apparently there are over 300 Lego modellers worldwide, all with degrees in Arts or Design.
We looked around the miniature villages; hardly any were the same as the Germany Legoland, which was great. It took 100 Lego modellers over 3 years and over 35 million bricks to complete the miniature village in Windsor! They had London, of course, with the changing of the guards, Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, Big Ben etc. They had another display from NASA in the USA, complete with
The famous faces wall
...you can also see part of the 'David' statue in the front (he has a pigeon on his head) a rocket that blew heaps of steam (i.e. taking off) every 10-15 minutes). A football stadium, a scene from Romeo & Juliet, Scottish scenery and much more. We had a fun day again, and didn’t leave until closing time. Now I think Daniel has definitely fulfilled his childhood dreams of visiting Legoland - two in two months.
We went out for dinner in Windsor and had a traditional British meal of ‘Fish and Chips’, however, true to British style, we had it served with peas! (B McGee, you would have loved that!) At least they weren’t mushy peas - yuck!
On Sunday we had a quiet day at home. Didn’t really do too much; nothing exciting enough to report about anyway!
So, that’s about the summation of our lives here in Guildford. For your next exciting instalment please join us again next week.
p.s. Extra add on - Daniel has managed to get some more work at that joiners again for the rest of the week - yah! Oh yeah, and it didn't rain for my walk home on Tuesday - extra yah!
