I know, I know! Bit behind...
So Switzerland. Another amazing country. After leaving France, we headed to the Jungfrau region. We stayed in a really nice hotel in Interlakken at the bottom of the Jungfrau railway system.
The first night we arrived at dinnertime, so didn't have much time to do much sightseeing. We had a group dinner, and Craig discovered a potato dish called rosti. After dinner we went out for drinks with a few of our tour buddies. We found a nearby bar and ordered some drinks... I ordered a vodka, and the friendly man behind the bar (who we weren't sure understood us) decided he'd pour one of all his coloured vodkas! It was one of those panicky tourist moments when you think you've just blown all your money on overpriced drinks. BUT as it turns out, he was lovely, and only charged me for one, and the rest were free to try! So we all tasted red, blue, green, vanilla, caramel, purple, and definitely got our money worth!
Next day Craig and I bought a ski pass to go to Kleine Scheidegg, which is about as high as you can go without
paying the 170 francs to get to the Top of Europe, Jungfrau. This is also where a lot of the ski shops and rentals are. Craig rented some skiis and I decided to go walking. I wasn't going to waste money of something I would be useless at and give up on after 30mins... So I decided to leave him to it and venture off walking in the -6C snowy mountains. I found a really cool little look out, and watched some snowboarding and skiing, and lauged at people stacking it. I met up with Craig later that day and he told me of his adventures of going down the wrong track, as in he didn't turn off and ended up trying to ski on a sledding and hiking track! haha! He fell a lot, and laughed a lot, so he had a great time. By the time we returned the ski gear and caught the train down the mountain, it was dark, and time to get back to the hotel, and find some dinner. We had kebabs for all that are interested. haha!
Next day we thought we'd try our luck again with our one-day ski passes...do the
dodgy... So, we walked to the train station, and took our seat on the train... Had to be brave, I'm a terrible liar, so i was hoping they wouldn't look at our tickets. The date on the said the 28th, so we thought maybe we might be able to get away with it, and play dum tourist. My ticket came out, held, and given back no problems! HOORAY! a free day on the mountains! We were feeling pretty cocky after that, so everytime our ticket got checked (which is really frequently) we got more confident. This time when we changed trains at Lauterbrunnen, we decided to have a look around the town. We had been told tehre was a lady who owned a Swiss Army Knife Shop, so we had a look there, and ended up with a few souvenirs... my knife is soooooo pretty! This is also the town where we first experienced snow. Actual snow fall. It was one of those moments when you stop and realise how good life is. I managed to take a photo of my first ever snowflake, and I've been obsessed with them ever since!
We rented some sleds, a good one,
and a not-so-good wooden one. We only paid 17 francs for the rental of both, where other people had paid 15-25each! sometimes it pays not to go to the touristy spots! We then took our sleds to Kleine Scheidegg, but visibility was rubbish, and i chickened out of dying, so we went back down to a spot where visibility was further than the person in front of you. Still scarey, but good fun! I crashed a few times, ended up with bruises, and a face full of snow, but so many laughs, and so worth it. I say its funny, not fun. haha! if you stack it, it's only fair to stop, get off and watch the next person to crash where you did.
That night we decided we'd have a traditional swiss meal, cheese fondue. Basically its just a whole lot of bread, and melted cheese to dip it in! We also had a few potatoes, and other bits, but the majority of the meal is bread and cheese. So much cheesy bread! too much.
And that pretty much is what we did in switzerland. A beautiful country, particularly in the jungfrau region where the
Craig's stack
If you look closely you can see where he face planted! haha! mountains are beautiful. Either covered in snow (like they were when we went), snow capped, or in the warmer months for hiking. This place comes recommended!
And onto Germany and Netherlands!
