14/09/16 – woensdag – dag 11 St-Moritz. Zonder verdere problemen maak... read more

Today Sept 7, We actually slept in - til 8 a.m. Even though the bells ???at the church (about 50 feet) away ring loudly ? at 6 a.m. We didn't hear them. I guess yesterday's 2 1/2 hour hike ?? got to us. Today we got a late start and took the bus to St. Moritz to ride the train to Poschiavo, this track is part of the Bernina Express. Oh, for beauty, and startling views of the steep climb!! From 1775 to 2223 Meters. It doesn't sound like a lot but is very challenging for the train to make this assent On a track without a cog-wheel mechanism. This train goes through 55 tunnels, and 196 bridges and climbs over the Bernina Pass. Usually visitors put out mega bucks to take the "Bernina Express" With ... read more

For the last 20 years, I have subscribed to several travel magazines, and I get very excited when a new one arrives. In one of my first travel magazines there was an article about the world's most outstanding train trips. One of the trips was the Orient Express, and it looked interesting, but the trip that won my heart was the Bernina Express. The train starts in Chur, Switzerland, which is very near the border with Liechtenstein. It climbs up through the Alps by way of spiraling tunnels and crosses the Bernina Pass on one of the highest train crossings in the world. Then it descends by way of corkscrew bridges and viaducts into Turino, Italy. I really can't describe the things I saw, but I will post many pictures. For more info, go to www.swisstravelsystem.com/.../Bernina-express-en.html ... read more

May 14th Took the train to the Alpes today. 3-4 hour trip each way. We travelled past a beautiful aqua lake called Walensee. Huge steep cliffs on one side and the rail line and typical Swiss villages on the other. Cows with bells around their necks scatter the fields. The train slowly ascends towards St Moritz to a height of 1775metres. We crossed the Landwasser Viaduct-a world famous cast-iron piece of Rhaetian railway. It is currently under repair so the train slows to a crawl over the viaduct that reaches 65 metres in height and 142 metres in length. The viaduct is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. We stopped at St Moritz for a quick bite. The town is dead this time of year but in winter it is the playground of the ... read more

Almost didn't take the trip ! What a lovely train trip crossing over the Swiss Alps into Italy. Bernina express trip ranks very high in the list of beautiful and wonderful railway journeys. But I almost didn't take the trip due to tiredness. I had a long train journey the previous day from Interlakin to Davos dorf - about 8 hours journey. I was kind of had enough for the day and didn't fancy taking another 8 hours trip. However, next day I thought I might as well. But I didn't know how beautiful this trip going to be. The train runs between Davos Dorf to Triano in Italy. It takes 4 hours one way and 4 hours to return. My whole trip was booked by travel agent. So all I had to do was to ... read more
