Hello my fellow travellers! This morning me and Andreas said our goodbyes to Brigitt and Sam (Jürg was unfortunately not around when we left) and then ran (once again) to the station to catch our train to Sargans. However, today we didn't switch trains right away but instead we took a hike up the mountain to visit the nearby Sargans Castle. It is really lovely up there, the castle is not very big but it is beautiful and it's located in an absolutely breathtaking spot! Inside the castle there are a couple of cool old cannons and with both me and Andreas (especially me) being juvenile boys we of course posed at the guns and snapped a few photos. I should also mention that the hike itself up to the castle is quite beautiful. It's not ... read more

A quick 2 hour flight on SwissAir from Madrid landed us in Zurich. From the airport it was a fast 30 minute train ride to the central station. This is where Barb and I started our bus tour of Swizterland and Austria in 2012 so we wanted to start here again with Lisa and Larry in tow as they had never traveled here. We arrived to sunshine and temps in the low 80's. The plan was to walk the short few blocks to our hotel but after we got off the train I was feeling the effects of some serious food poisoning issues :( The night previous I had eaten spaghetti bolognese at one of the sidewalk cafes in Madrid, passing up the traditional Paella dish that everyone else had. Anyway once in Zurich with my ... read more

Monday 18 May: We all managed a bit of a sleep in and then headed into town to visit the zoo. It is highly rated and even on a Monday was quite busy. 26 francs entry for adults represented reasonably good value in an expensive city too. The day started with a surprise when, as we left the hotel, a passenger zeppelin flew right overhead! We would have been less surprised to see Superman. Zachary wasn’t quite sure what to make of it! The zeppelin is celebrating Edelweiss Airline’s 20th birthday and is flying in different parts of the country. We were very fortunate to see it as it is not flying in Zurich until May 21, but was evidently doing some test runs today. 45 minutes scenic flights are 200 francs ($300) which I reckon ... read more

Sunday 17 May: Zachary finally got to go on the playground at the hotel this morning while Heather packed. He has been dying to do this! Then we got a taxi to the airport. The driver was very nice and we had a good chat on the way. His views were very similar to those of Mr Rado’s from Bled. He told us about how he had always had a fascination with India and when he turned 30 he just quit his job, sold all his possessions, and went there for 6 months. Some people thought he was a bit crazy but he loved it. It is good to be able to engage with locals like this and you learn heaps! Ljubljana airport is very small, similar to Hamilton, and we had some morning tea before ... read more

Yes, today was another 4-country day, and rather unexpectedly. I thought we might go through Germany, since Salzburg is on the border, but when we cut across Liechtenstein, I was pretty thrilled. And I would post more pictures that I just took around Zurich, but the place I'm staying only has some bizarre Swiss power outlets - I don't remember these from my last trip here, but then I think my hotel last time had multiple outlet possibilities, including American. Long story short, I can't plug in my computer to get the pictures off my camera, so maybe I'll come back and add them tomorrow night or something. Since today was a bit boring until I got to Zurich anyway, I figured I'd tell you the most interesting things that have happened to me since I ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Rhine Falls April 30th 2015

I went to Switzerland on the 2nd of April for a week and stayed in Zurich. It was my first time in Europe and I was definitely impressed. Our first stop was the Rhine falls. It was a rainy day, but the rain made it all the more beautiful and mystical, in a way. The falls were lovely and you could literally see them up close from so many different angles. I thought it would be a little redundant to see the falls from 4 different areas, but each view was beautiful and unique, which is something that can be said for all of Switzerland. I was told that the farmers actually get paid to keep their land in tip top shape so that starry eyed tourists like myself would be in awe at all times. ... read more

Just 2 more nights and then we will leave for 3 months with our backpack. The trip is long in the making, but we are pretty much ready. Bags are mostly packed and the apartment is ready to hand over for the sublet. We'll try to keep this blog up to date with interesting things we may experience and perhaps a photo now and then. Don't fear for our lives if we don't post for a while: we might just be enjoying ourselves too much, or be without internet; or both :D... read more

Hi Everyone, I'm pretty much settled into a routine now during the week (similar to last week but with less alcohol), so I'll just jump straight to the weekend destination of... Zurich - the largest city in Switzerland, and an excellent place to watch police hose soccer rioters. Planning Stage: We'll just show up and Google things I jumped in on a trip with Nathan (Canadian), Brendan (Australian), and Sean (another Australian). I think we picked Zurich because the Aussies wanted to see snow. We did some looking around on Tripadvisor, but overall just bought tickets and a hotel, then crossed our fingers. It worked well :-) Friday: That costs how much??? We showed up on Friday night and quickly found out that Switzerland is the most expensive country in the world. A hot dog will ... read more

This is the first trip to Zurich for all of us, even Herve. It was Lauren's request to come. Zurich is a very charming town, Sophisticated, worldly, chic and sweet. I feel quite daggy in Zurich as since everyone else seemed so chic and well put together. The stores, the streets, the boutiques, the tram, the chocolates and every Swiss clichéyou can think of is elegant, sophisticated and well-designed. On the first day we walked around the Old Town, where all the building are old yet seem new because of how well kept they are. The streets are spotless and there seems to always be some machine or person cleaning up. There are no homeless people (big change from America) and everyone looks affluent and stylish. One new ... read more
