You know what's a weird little travel thing I love? Sitting on the train platform when the high speed trains go by - I love the gust of wind, I love the sound (whistle mixed with a slight clickity-clack). Anyway, short one today. I didn't "plan" today I simply went into the city to wander around for a bit. I overheard some people talking about the "Festival" yesterday so I'm like k cool, day planned lol. I got off at the main station and just wandered down towards the waterfront and sure enough - Festival! Turns out it's a big deal - like it only happens once every 3 years for 2 days kind of big deal. Basically the entire core is shut down with rides, food stalls, music stages, and games. There were also dragon ... read more

Yesterday was a bit of a travel adventure. I'll explain at the bottom - but first today! Today I went full guns a blazin' - Rhine Falls and Uetliberg mountain. Rhine Falls are continental Europe's largest... I'll admit the pictures beforehand made them look dinky, but even though they are short they are POWERFUL. I will forever love the roar of a good waterfall - it's so soothing yet mighty. The mist didn't hurt either, with this heat. The viewing platform pretty much puts you inside the fall, you're that close. It's amazing. I listened and just soaked it all in for about an hour before a giant gaggle of tourists showed up and the vibe died lol. Back to the city I go. I've quickly learned the chocolate shops in the touristy areas often give ... read more

We get up and walk to the station. We’re going to visit Zurich, which is 10 miles to the north. I purchase 3 return tickets which are so expensive I wonder briefly if I’ve accidentally bought the train. The nice lady in the ticket office explains that she’s giving us tickets to Uetliberg because they’re the same price as Zurich and Uetliberg is a nice place to visit in the mountains. We spend the morning in Zurich, walking along the river to the Fraumünster and over the bridge to the Grossmünster churches then visit the Kunsthaus. It’s a really good art gallery with lots of works by artists the old man has heard of. The rest of my family are philistines; while I wander round enjoying the art, they sit on a bench checking their social ... read more

The experiment is over. Time to load the equipment back into the van. After a final trip to the PSI café, we set off for Horgen, a town on the shores of Lake Zürich. The Italians were in charge of loading the pumps but at the first few roundabouts there are creaks and clunks. So we end up in General Electric car park for half an hour resecuring everything. It’s a hot drive – the temperature is pushing 30 degrees so once in Horgen, we head straight for the Sportbad; a 50m open air pool with adjacent lake swimming area. We relax and swim in the pool. Daughter no 2 swims in the lake but I wuss out and make do with sitting semi emerged on the steps. Then we check into our B&B. We’ve been ... read more

Renata and I left Thursday night on our way to South Africa. We had an 11 hour stopover in Zurich before we had to continue onto our flight to Durban, South Africa. So we thought why not explore Zurich in the meantime. Getting from the airport to Zurich was easy. We just had to take the train from the Airport station Zurich Flughafen to the main station Zurich Hauptbahnhof. Bahnhofstrasse Street After we arrived in downtown Zurich, we walked down the famous Bahnhofstrasse street. Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's main downtown streets known for being one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping areas. At the end of the street you hit Burliplatz where there is a weekly market on Friday from 5-11am. It was interesting to check out the European market and see the flowers and ... read more

We knew it was going to be wet today but we didn't bargain on it being quite so cold. We had a low of 5 and a high of 9. Never mind, we had a city tour in mind which would work in well with the weather and we did have warm clothes. Chur (pronounced Core) is just over 2 hours train ride from here so manageable for a day trip. We arrived in Chur in the middle of the day and set off for the Old Town which is through the new town and up the hill. The first feel on entry is that it feels spacious and not hemmed in but off the main square are many narrow streets with little over bridges joining one building to another across the street. Also there are ... read more

Once again we have another lovely sunny and calm day although we expect it to change for tomorrow. This is therefore our last chance to experience the mountains around here before heading home. There is a lake called Klontal in a valley near Glarus and it looks lovely in the pictures so it would be a shame to leave this valley without a visit. We could get the train and then bus up there but since it is a Sunday, Marc could take us up in the car and we could walk along the lake track. We packed a picnic and set off with the backpack for Sophia and packs for us. It was a good theory but fell down in that Sophia was having nothing to do with the backpack and let the entire lake ... read more

As titled, the Cows Come Down to the Town. It has a poetic symmetry to it, doesn't it? It started with a distant rumbling, clanging noise. Cows! We dashed outside just as they arrived and I missed the start. Darn! I photographed what I could then went inside. Then we heard bells again. This time we made it to be there for the front runners. What a sight. The families in their white smock tops led the cows who had their heads decorated in flowers and greenery. Around their necks they had huge bells so you can imagine the noise of a hundred or so cows clomping their way through the streets. Throughout the herd were families separating their own herds from the others. It was such a wonderful sight that you would not see anywhere ... read more

Winter is coming. The mornings here start at 3 degrees until the sun arrives and it gets warm. Since it was going to be another gloriously clear and sunny day we wanted to stay in the mountains and enjoy them while we could. Near here is the valley to a small town called Elm where we had stayed during our across Switzerland hike from the Foo Pass. Irvy took us by car up the Sernf valley which is another long and narrow glacial valley with picturesque farms dotting the landscape until you reach Elm at the head. While she took a day off from us to spend time at home, we got the cable way to high up on the mountain to 2300m where the land is more sloping but still steepish. This level throughout Switzerland ... read more

Yesterday was a travel day to the Glarus region from the Berner Oberland. We took the scenic route to Lucern via Meirengen to avoid trains full of tourists going to Bern or Zurich. It was a wise decision and we had the most perfect Swiss scenery along the lake of Brienz, up over the Hasliberg Pass, past lakes Lungern and Sarnen and through to Lucern. The lakes were beautifully aqua and towns along the way basked in sunlight and clear blue skies. It was chocolate box scenery. From Lucern we took a train via a high broad plateau in parts and onto Pfaffikon on the lake of Lucern where we changed trains to take us up the Glarus valley to Haetzingen just beyond Glarus town. The further up the valley you go, the broader the valley ... read more
