Raining! As forecasted, it is raining. Again. But, maybe tomorrow will be nice and we’ll wake up to blue sky as forecasted – just in time to leave. We were going to go up the Rigi but gave that idea away. We instead went to Brunnen to get groceries for the next couple of days since Switzerland closes on a Sunday and we’ll be going to Grindelwald tomorrow. While in Brunnen we had coffee and cake and a walk around the town despite it being closed since it was after midday. You have to factor in when things close, except cafes which stay open. We were back in Gersau in time to have lunch and just generally relaxing until the rain stopped. Eventually it did so we went off and did a complete explore of Gersau. ... read more

Indeed it was an early start. Up at 5.45 and leaving at 6.30 for the St Gallen Railway Station to catch the 6.42 train to Zurich to meet Karilyn and Neil. They were waiting and in fine form after their trip from Bangkok. After buying the Half Fare Card from the station for the rest of our time in Switzerland we started back to St Gallen where Bruno met us to take the bags. He left us for an hour while we visited the Textile Museum which I knew that Karilyn would enjoy. It wasn’t as good as it had been the last time we visited but the laces and purpose made fabrics for fashion were worth seeing. We had expected to see a lot more of the new developments in textile technology, like fabric for ... read more

Raining again so we need to be creative with our activities. We went out of town to Flawil the Maestrami/Munz Chocolate Factory to see the favourite eats of the Swiss being made. Who would have thought that so many chocolates could be turned out in one minute – one per second it seemed. Who eats so many chocolates? Most Swiss it would seem. We came away with a nice little stash of chocolates to last for some time including a Swiss Army Knife chocolate to present to Neil and Karilyn on their arrival in the morning. “Welcome to Swizerland Herr and Fraulein Froude. Please accept this wonderful gift from TTAT’s tours on your arrival”. The chocolate is wrapped to look like the real thing. An interesting way to spend an hour or so. We drove back ... read more

Today is raining so not a lot of sight seeing can be done. But, a lot of talking and discussing trips and the different cultural and historical differences we have. We also planned for the time we have in Gersau with Neil and Karilyn which changed from some of our original plans. Some good options. In the afternoon we drove to Rorschach on the shore of the Bodensee to visit a new building a art gallery by Wurth who is a very rich German. The building houses his large art collection which is changed from time to time. Despite it being a workplace as well as a gallery the local people can come and go as they wish. It is a huge glass building with a very spartan design inside - nothing that would detract from ... read more

It was a travel day today so not so interesting. We were picked up from the hotel at 8.20 by SMS and transported to Munich Airport where we were met by the Peugeot representative. He ran us through the car controls and we signed the appropriate documents. We were now the :owners: of a brand new car with only 15kms on the clock and registered in France. Straight on to the autobahn¦ Lindsay learned very quickly about driving on the right hand side of the road. I never took my eyes off the road............ Cars wizzed by at extraordinary speeds. Many at speeds of 180kph or more. The general speed limit is 130kph. Linds had to quickly drive much faster than he was used to or he would stay in the truck lane. After following the ... read more

Our taxi arrived a little before 7; we loaded up and were off to Gare de Lyon. We had a long day of train travel ahead, but we would be comfortable. The United States really needs to start investing in high speed trains. If not just for the sheer comfort of the travel at least to reduce the carbon imprint. Trains are much better for the environment than cars or planes. There is as least one train station in every Major European city and most smaller towns are connected by regional train systems. In Paris there are at least 6 major train stations that I can think of off the top of my head. Each station has trains that go in different directions. Gare de Lyon is for trains headed to Switzerland and South Eastern France. ... read more

A labrador outruns its master on the other side of the river, getting in and out of the morning shadows sweeping the meadow. Treetops and the gabled roofs of ancient houses reflect in the blue-green waters. An idyllic European scene plays out on the shores of the Rhine. I follow its course. I boarded a train to this old Swiss town just across the German border because of its proximity to Rhine fall. The river leaps 23 metres near Schaffhausen to form Europe’s largest waterfall. At the fall, the river is about 150 metres wide. And there I was, on a silly search for the superlative in Switzerland. At the railway station, I looked up a map and found I could trace the river a few streets away and then follow it until the fall. No ... read more
