In my previous post I gave an overview of what it was like for me living in Zurich for 2+ years. I've now moved out, and will spend at least the first part of this year traveling. I have no plans to move back to Zurich. A few of my friends have asked me why, as on the surface, Zurich has a lot of nice characteristics, like high salaries, good working conditions, accessibility of nature, English being widely spoken. These factors conspire to give Zurich very high scores on the various algorithms used to define various quality of life / livability metrics. However, these reductionist metrics can't hope to capture je ne sais quoi aspects, such as the affability of Australian... read more

By the time I decided to make a trip to Switzerland my friend Richie and I had already decided to go to Munich for Oktoberfest. It's the spring of 2011 and Oktoberfest is at the end of September. I want to add something onto this trip to Munich though. It will only be my second time in Europe, having just been to Greece in 2008, and I want to add another country to my list. Having always wanted to go to the home country of my tennis Idol, Roger Federer (for more reasons than just that's where he's from), Switzerland seemed like the obvious choice. The Alps. The cheese. The chocolate. The nuetrelness. And so close to Munich. Richie was interested in going to Switzerland too, so we booked our flights from DC to Zurich then ... read more

Zurich the commercial centre of Switzerland 27 October 2013 After leaving Bern, we only had 120km to travel. This leads me to think of Switzerland as a country and all it offers. It is only 41,000 sq km in size and is bordered to the west by France, to the east by Austria and Liechtenstein, and to the south by Italy. It is landlocked between the Alps and the Jura Mountains. Mountains make up almost a 1/3 of Switzerland and the drive from Bern to Zurich; the Alps make this drive absolutely picturesque. Mix the Alps with the lakes and the countryside of green grass and vineyards and orchards and dairy farms, one can’t help but love the scenery the country offers. We arrived in Zurich at about 2.30pm. The camp site was on the edge ... read more

Our flight arrived into Basel last night and we caught the train directly from the airport terminal to Basel's main train station, directly across the street from Hotel Victoria. Hotel was nice, comfortable bed. Quick sleep, breakfast at McDonald's next door, then caught the train to Zurich. Our hotel, the St. Gotthard, was just one block from the train station so we ran over, dropped off the luggage, then ran back to the station and caught the train to Frauenfeld where Nicolas and Sylvia met us. Short drive to their little cottage on a couple hectares of land, surrounding a little lake full of fish and freshwater lobsters! It was a beautiful location and we had a lot of fun catching up with Nick and Sylvia, eating lobsters, drinking wine from Nick's vineyard, eating fondue, and ... read more

I find myself on a train again heading towards Zurich as the last leg of my amazing European trip. I absolutely love this train trip through the Swiss Alps. The views are stunning. This is the second time I have been privileged to make this journey, and I really tried to soak it in. You never know if you will be on this path again, so I wanted to just stare out my window and take it all in. I took some photos of some of the amazing beauty I saw, however I am not so sure the pictures will do justice seeing they were taken from inside a train going exceptionally fast. Upon arrival to the main train station, I felt familiar seeing I had been there before. I was not as intimidated as I ... read more

Appenzell had some big clouds hanging about 100 feet over my head, and it was raining. I wished it wasn't raining, but it was my last day, so I made the best of it. You know how you sometimes feel like you're walking around with your head in the clouds? I really was. My little hotel was in a convenient location, so I walked a few blocks into town. Many of the buildings had the traditional painting on them, and most have shutters. This area of Switzerland is so close to Germany, so the style of architecture is very similar to what I saw in Bavaria. Many of the businesses have an ornate metal insignia that hangs perpendicular to their entrance door. It depicts the store's type of business. This comes from long ago when many ... read more

The Malaysian woman who was also staying at the B and B was flying back today, so we went to the airport together. She was a tiny little thing with a huge suitcase and a shopping bag that was twice the typical size. I had my backpack and suitcase. We were quite a sight getting on and off trams as we worked our way to the airport. When we arrived, we went our separate ways, and I checked out the the airport before boarding my 2:00 flight on IcelandAir. Here are some more tidbits I learned during this trip: Everyone under the age of 30 and many people over the age of 30 can speak enough English to communicate. They start learning it in Kindergarten. Nearly all of the music I heard was American with a ... read more

I was so tired that I slept 12 hours Saturday night! I was ready for a long day of train travel from Italy into the northeast corner of Switzerland. Lori served yogurt and a local type of fruitcake for breakfast, and then she gave me a ride to the station (it was sprinkling a little). On my trip yesterday, I rode a panoramic train from Chur to Tirano, but as I returned I booked a regular Swiss train that runs on the same tracks. It was an overcast day, and many of the mountain tops were in the clouds. It gave a totally different look to the scenes I saw yesterday in the sunlight. The last six cars of the train were packed with tour groups who had reserved an entire car. I had the front ... read more

My last city change dragging my ever full suitcase was straightforward and despite being a 3 hour train journey felt like it passed quickly due to a quiet carriage and a conductor who constantly handed out miniature bags of haribo bears. Hell you don’t get this treatment on the virgin train to London Euston, you’re lucky if you even get a seat on that thing. Anyway, I digress. Zurich main station is a beautiful building although very confusing as it seems to have 54 platforms!!!! I since have discovered that it only has 18 and then they just to the 50’s for some reason and these platforms are so far away from the main station they may as well be in a separate city. I negotiated the tram right outside which headed in the direction of ... read more
