Day 13: Arriving in Stockholm. Took the early flight out of Merida at 6 am to catch the flight to New York form Caracas in time. Made the big mistake of going out with 3 local Meridans late into the night, which allowed only 2 hours of sleep. Upon arrival in JFK took the train into town and walked around with my back pack in the 20 degree weather and wind. Had lunch in the little India region at Lexington and 28th street and headed to catch the overnight plane from Newark to Stockholm. Arrived the following day to the spotless airport of Stockholm, on a rare sunny day temp of -5 c. A timely and quiet train awaited us at the main terminal to the center of the Stockholm for 28 dollars. As can be ... read more

Ah it’s been awhile, I apologize! Lots has happened since I last wrote, we went to Stockholm a few weeks ago and it was great. Very cold, but nice. We all decided that going to a party the night before we had to catch the morning train to Stockholm was a good idea, but of course it wasn’t. We got home from the party with enough time to sleep for about an hour and a half before we had to catch the bus to the Karlstad train station. When I was getting on the bus in the morning, my friend Reinhard was getting off the bus to come home, he apparently decided to stay at the party drinking till 6am…which I am glad we didn’t do!! After we arrived in Stockholm, we decided to walk to ... read more

Stockholm truly lives up to its reputation for being one of the world's most beautiful cities. The city itself is made up of thousands of islands, with multiple harbours forming the backdrop for the beautiful baroque style architecture throughout the city centre. Our day in Stockholm was largely spent strolling around. While it was a very chilly day, the sun was out making our stroll along the harbour really beautiful. Being that Stockholm is the city of museums, it was only fitting that our visit there include two of the most famous. We first visited Skansen, an open air museum that exhibits traditional housing from Swedish and Nordic lands. It also houses a huge variety of animals, some of which I had never seen before. Being that its winter here, the brown bears at Skansen were ... read more

Eight classmates of mine (from my pre-semester Danish course) and I decided to go for a trip to Stockholm, before the Spring Semester began. We took a 9 hour overnight bus. I was very paranoid that I would forget something, or perhaps we would miss our bus stop. I packed everything to a T. I had the smallest backpack out of all of my fellow travelers, which I was very proud of myself for doing. I even packed a first aid kit. After 9 hours of interrupted sleep and being jerked around on SWEBUS we finally arrived at Central Station Stockholm at 7AM. We all withdrew money from an ATM and used the restrooms. And then I realized that I left my backpack on the bus! Panicked, I ran outside and chased after our bus flailing ... read more

After a frustrating afternoon of attempting to get my flight switched to this morning, only to find out after three phone calls (one of the operators hung up accidentally just as she was answering my question, resulting in me crying for five minutes out of frustration before calling back), that the flight change would cost me an additional $1400. Ah, no thanks. So I was in no mood to go to dinner. But I'm into doing the next right thing and fulfilling my obligations, so I took a short bath and then washed my hair and rushed around to get ready. I had carefully picked out an outfit at home that I thought would be warm and suitable - a white tee shirt under a light, giraffe-print cardigan, with a soft caramel colored wool skirt, dark ... read more

By the time I reached Stockholm, I was feeling rather beat up - more from the lack of sleep the past few days (ah, the 5am wakeup) than hitting my head on the overhead compartment of the plane. Yesterday was either a comedy of errors, or just one disaster after another. I got on my flight with no problems, but then learned that the carry on I had shown to the check in agent was in fact too large for the overhead compartment - which i didn't figure out until after I had removed a bunch of books from it and irritated passengers embarking on the plane. At any rate, I finally settled in my seat by the window, only to realize when my travel companion sat down next to me that I had in fact ... read more

Again another COLD country- you would have thought I would have learnt from my year in Russia. Stockholm is such a very beautiful city- the buildings and also the people- never seen so many blonds in one place! So I check into my hostel which was a little boat on the river and immediately get chatted up by a bloke who is over there for a few days with his mates to celebrate this birthday! So after my first day in Sweden- wandering around the beautiful city, visiting the national museum and the like my night was spent in the company of ten young men- but before you ask I was an angel, although you may not believe it!! So another great weekend and another pin goes in my map xxx... read more

Well this is my first blog and as we are not on the road I thought I should show a few pictures of the beauty of Stockholm where we live. Unfornately Stockholm is not what it should be at the moment. We have had no snow to date and most of the days have been well over freezing. It appears that global warming has already affected the Swedish climate. When I grew up (am now 33) in the south of England I had a wooden sledge. Nowadays I doubt they even sell them and things seem to be going the same way even up here in the Nordics. Time for us all to change our lifestyle it would seem. So here are some old winter pictures of Stockholm that I hope any readers will enjoy. I ... read more

I made it to Stockholm! I left Tuesday afternoon and arrived Wednesday morning at 7 Stockholm time. I hardly slept at all on the plane, so I was awake for 30 something hours! The plane ride was excellent. I got to sit in a window seat, and the guy next to me was very nice. He kept talking to me in Swedish though, so eventually nodding and smiling didn't work anymore, and I had to admit I had no clue what he was saying. I had my own TV on the seat in front of me, and it had games, movies, a catalog of stuff you could buy on the flight (weird stuff for airplane shopping), a map that showed how far we had gone, and cameras that let you watch what was happening in front ... read more
