We flew out of Regina the morning of December 22. COLD weather that we were happy to leave behind. Our flight was a little late as the plane was coming into Regina from Toronto where the Ice Storm of the Century was occurring. That didn't bother me so much as the fact that we were flying TO Toronto to connect to our flight to Europe. We ended up flying out of Regina about an hour late, at 12:12PM, by the time de-icing was completed but we had a 5 hour wait scheduled for Toronto so no worries there. As we approached Toronto's Pearson Airport we could see that the roads, trees, buildings were all completely covered in ice. The runway was clear at Pearson airport but the taxi lanes to the terminal were covered in really ... read more

This morning we expected to wake up to streets blanketed in snow, but it seems the worst of last night's storm did not hit the city. After breakfast we headed to the station to check that our train to Sweden would be running this afternoon. We were told that the train would be running, but it would be running from Malmö not from Copenhagen. The girl at the Swedish Rail information desk told us which Danish train we could catch to Malmö to connect with the service from Malmö to Stockholm. With our train arrangements confirmed we proceeded out the other side of the station towards the National Museum of Denmark. Copenhagen may have missed the brunt of the storm, but was still copping some light snow showers so we had a fairly brisk walk to ... read more

My journey to Malmo should have been very simple; cross the road to the central station in Gothenburg, get on a train, 2 hours later get off. However, fate decides to throw me a curveball. Actually to be precise the Swedish railway system decides to throw me a curveball as for some unknown reason they use the height of summer and tourist season to do all their engineering works so I discover there are no trains going to Malmo and I had to get bus replacement to another station and then pick up the train. Ok I can do this… I can negotiate a bus in a language that is so alien to me I might as well be from Mars. Luckily the Swedes are amazing at English and finding an official looking person I ask ... read more

Ok, this is going to be the travel diary of Ulf and Lynette's 7 months European tour. We are a middle aged Swedish/Australian - Australian couple who will spend Lyn's long service leave travelling around, mainly France, discovering the food, wine and people. To help financing a trip like this we are going to do some "house sits" in France. For those of you who are not familiar with that concept; it is a win - win arrangement where we are looking after someones house and often pets for free while the owners provide us with free accomodation. At this point in time we have a total of 5 weeks of house sitting arranged in 3 different locations in France. Through various websites we are hoping to find one or two more during our journey. Our ... read more

Another pop quiz: Which of the following made Anna's train ride from Calais, France, to Copenhagen, Denmark, an epic disaster? a. The over-night train was booked because of locals taking advantage of a school holiday, so she had to take the 2:00 AM train. b. Sitting in the rail station until 2:00 AM so exhausted her that she slept through her connecting train. c. The connecting train she finally got on broke down. d. The total train ride took 32 hours. e. All of the above. The correct answer is.... E! EVERYTHING BAD HAPPENED ON THAT TRAIN RIDE. I was peeved. If you think that it couldn't get any worse, though... well, you'd be right, because since then everything has been a dream come true. I spent the weekend in Denmark with Ksenija, the niece of ... read more

Day 1: Tulla-Dublin Between us Helen and I have two extra-long legs and two with maintenance issues, so long-haul flights (in this case, fourteen hours to Abu Dhabi and eight to Dublin) are a particular trial. I’d already booked seat numbers online to ensure an aisle seat (all the exit and bulkhead seats were gone). But at Tullamarine, we hit the jackpot. An employee of the year at Etihad check-in noted my height and said, “I think we can put you in two exit-row seats”, and so he did. I suspect they withhold some of the good seats from the on-line bookings to dole out to worthy causes such as ourselves. Then for the second leg the plane was only three-quarters full, and unaccountably two bulkhead seats were left unoccupied when we settled into the flight, ... read more

Well...jumped on the train and went to Sweden for the day (as you do in these parts) Got off at a lovely town called Malmo (with 2 little dots above the 'o') and had a meander around from about 10am until 4pm. The place was getting ready for a big festival of art and music and street performances so there was a lot of hussle and bustle about, but was a pleaseant day all round....not just because the sun popped its head out and the rain took the day off, but the sights and the lunch i had was pretty good also. Only cost about $20 oz to get on the train, and we went over the longest bridge that i have ever crossed to get there.... The trip back was a little different because the ... read more
