G'day Friends and Family This blog is a brief overview of our 6 days in Spain, including the infamous La Tomatina (tomato throwing festival) in the small town of Bunol (pronounced Bunyol). We hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as we did producing them! Monday 29/08/05 We arrived in Madrid airport (it reminded me of the old Coolangatta airport - very 'no frills') and picked up our hire car - the diesel Seat Ibiza! Needless to say, it wasn't over-powered. But that was a good thing considering we were driving on the wrong side of the road from the wrong side of the car. Needless to say, confidence was low! The first objective was to get to our accomodation in the city where we were meeting up with our travel buddies Jen and ... read more

Bunol was already partying when we got there. Locals were drinking and music was going in the street at 8am. Before the actual throwing of tomatos the tradition is for people to climb up a lard greased 30 foot pole and bring down a ham. The heckling from the brits behind us was priceless with comments like, "just climb up him old girl!" The tomatos didn't come right away, so the restless crowd balled up shirts and hurled them at eachother. Getting clocked in the side of the head hurts, but throwing it back makes it better, which when you think about it, is the spirit of La Tomatina. A series of 5 trucks came rolling down the street (within 1 hour). The ruthless men in the trucks chucked tomatos and tomato slime at our ... read more

I¨ Im sitting in a cyber cafe right now in....Madrid! I made it safely yesterday with only a few minor glitches. I left from Charlotte at 5:20 on the 29th and flew from there to Newark, NJ. It was really cool flying into that airport because I could see the Empire State building and the Statue of Liberty from there. I then took a flight to Lisbon, Portugal. The seat that was assigned to me was a window seat except, ironically, there was no window there at all because it was the exit row. So I quickly grabbed one of the middle seats (you know the ones with 4 seats across and was able to sleep for about 3.5 hours on the plane. I landed in Portugal around 8:30, or 2:30 a.m. in my body´s time. ... read more

We took a group trip to La Alhambra (Arabic- "red or crimson castle") on Sunday the 28th. La Alhambra takes up about 1/12th of the city. We had to hike up many cobble stoned streets to get there. It was originally built as a small fort on the top of La Sabica for the moors in the 9th Century and sultans/kings didn't start living there until the 13th. Muhammed Al-Ahmar was the first Sultan and then La Alhambra was taken over by the Christians in when the Catholic Monarchs- Ferdinand and Isabel- expelled the Muslims and conquered the city of Granada in 1492. You can do more history research on your own if you want ... Basically ... we took a 5 hour tour and walked somewhere between 7 and 8 kilometers. Monolo was our guide. ... read more

Tuesday August 30, 2005 After a 4:45 am wake up in the hostel David and I tried to call a taxi. Lo and behold our phone card from the front desk last night did not work any longer, so we had to wake up the shift manager who sleeps in the lounge when they are closed. He was not particularly happy about it either. Fortunately he called a cab for us, and when it arrived we negotiated a very fair price to get David to the Train station and me to the airport. David and I parted ways and I took hold of the hostel manager’s advice at the airport. Ryanair is so picky about their 33lbs. checked luggage limit and charge you outrageously for every kilo overweight. The manager, in his early twenties, said “find ... read more

Hola everybody, Well here I am in sunny Spain and Wow what an experience so far. Firstly I think I should of taken a lot more Spanish lessons. I flew out Thursday afternoon and arrived 9.30pm. First thing first was that I had to get to Tarragona from Rues airport. The easiest option would most likely of been a taxi but you all know me, tight arse decided to do public transport seeing it would be so much cheaper. So I boarded the bus to Rues and then changed in Rues to go to Tarragona. Not overly difficult but when no one spoke any English, well I wasn´t overally confident. When arriving in Tarragona I was going to go by foot to my accommodation but decided on the easy way out and took a taxi when ... read more

Hola! Before I being writing I just want to say thank you to all the people who have helped me get here. People who were kind enough to write reccommendation letters for me: Alejandro Maya, Ellen McWhorter, & Joan Chan- Gracias! And, of course- my mom- Kathy for her unconditional love-- and funding. So, for those of you who don´t know- Bridget & I were in a car accident in Evanston the day before we left. Neither of us were seriously hurt (my thighs are just really sore and I have bruises on them from the airbag) but her car was smashed in. So, that was an upsetting way to leave the states but jeez, did it feel good to finally leave! I don´t have internet access at home- no one does- so we have to ... read more

Yo Yo, Its was as we tried to head to Barcelona that we realised we should probably have done some sort of planning. The only way we were gonna get out of Pamps was to hire a car and luckily after a day of hunting we picked up one of the last cars available - A Alfa 156 hatch - Sweet. A few off the clock attempts and near misses later we arrived in Barcelona were we spent a few days chilling at beaches and checking out the sights on some rental bikes - more scary moments. Then it was to the top of Spain to a wicked little coastel town called Cadaques with some of 'Raule Got Game the Wanderers' female friends. They cooked us all a massive feast for Raules birthday which was awesome ... read more
