After frantically writing a total of 13,000 words in about two weeks, I turned in 5 final papers and officially ended my term at NUI Galway. Thus, it was time to celebrate with our three week Easter break whirlwind tour of Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. On March 30th four of my friends and I caught a Ryanair flight into Barcelona (well. . . Girona, technically, since Ryanair doesn’t exactly fly into the most convenient airports). After catching a bus from the airport to the city center and then navigating the metro system, we made it to the Sant Jordi Diagonal Hostel. I was quite pleased to find that my Rick Steves’ Spain guidebook, which my brother had purchased from the British Amazon and had mailed to the hostel, was waiting at the reception desk when ... read more

South from Madrid we headed to Cordoba. This small town is known for a giant mosque called La Mezquita. The temple standing in the center of the town surrounded by a labyrinth of smaller buildings is basically the main reason to go to Cordoba. The mosque was created by Abd ar-Rahman 1 when the Moors ruled most of Spain. Started in 756 AD the temple continued to expand over the next couple of generations. The interior is a forest of red and white pillars that support a double archway. The pillars run in such a pattern to allow up to forty thousand worshippers to face Mecca and still see the priest. After the Moors lost power the mosque was converted into a Catholic church. The entrance to the mosque has a beautiful classic Islamic court ... read more

Happy 13th birthday to niece/cousin Mackenzie Conley, queen of the Irish dance! We spent today in Almeria, the largest city in this area. There were two highlights: first, we stumbled on one of the Holy Week processions. As many of you know, Holy Week is a huge time throughout Spain, and nearly every city has a series of religious processions to commemorate the week. Typically, each Church will have its own parade, and there are multiple ones each day. The one we saw today was one of five on Palm Sunday. The accompanying pictures will give you some idea of what it was like. I’ll try to write more about the procession later but am frankly too tired to do it now. The white costumes with hoods that are worn (and that are so disturbing ... read more

Hola, Since I've mostly failed so far at providing people from home with wonderful stories about my life in Spain, and since traveling alone means that bizarre things keep happening to me and I don't have anyone to tell them to, I give you...MY SPRING BREAK TRAVEL BLOG. It should be amusing, at least. And I'll add pictures when I get home (and by "home" I mean Madrid...yikes). Semana Santa: Background and historical implications I'm not actually supposed to get kicked out of my house until Monday, but my Señora is catching a bus back to her pueblo early friday morning, so there it is. This was kind of stressful because I was still not feeling well, and had finally convinced myself the day before (while trying to drag myself to the metro from my ... read more

After waking cold, stiff and hungry we started the long drive to Bilbao. It would appear that Europeans don't adhere to same standard for road signs as we do in the US. If a street sign exists it is usually tucked behind a tree, right at the point of turning without warning or a good ten yards passed the turn so you can clearly see it once you start turning. Needless to say it took us a while to reach Bilbao. After circling the city a couple of times we found our way into the downtown core to stop at the main attraction in Bilbao, the Guggenheim museum. We found street parking in front of the building and proceeded to take a wrong turn and walk completely around the building to find the entrance. The ... read more

3/30/07 Galway--Dublin--Barcelona After spending pretty much the entire night packing I woke up early in order to make it to my 9:00 class. I ended up walking to school with my backpack, which ended up being quite a bit heavier than I had hoped it would be. After class I walked into town to meet Sudie and Jenny (who were to me my travel companions for the majority of the trip) at the tourist information office. From there we walked up to catch the 11:30 Nester bus to Dublin. Two other girls, Steph and Catherine were supposed to meet us at the bus, but they were running late and Jenny had to stall the bus driver from leaving until they got there. They barely made it. Good start to the trip don’t you think? At the ... read more

Well, OK, only in the broadest possible sense - but I did go to Javea in Spain to play in a mixed netball tournament. Javea is on the Costa Blanca near Valencia, so when the opportunity to play came up, how could I refuse? We were feeling confident, as we had just won the grandfinal of our Thursday night competition (see photo at right of the successful team), but with one team coming all the way from Malaysia, who could know what the competition would be like? As it turned out, most of the teams were from London (and full of Aussies and Kiwis) and even the teams from Javea were ex-pat only. Had good and bad luck on the trip. It all started at the airport ... there was a crew of 14 of us ... read more

Spain is an incredible place, but not for any reason you'd expect. It's not the rolling hills of olive trees or the tiny villages nestled in the mountains that amaze me. Rather, I'm awed by the pleasure I find in doing the many mundane tasks that Spaniards do everyday without thinking. I adore hanging out the laundry, especially when I've just done a load with a lot of underwear. I know it sounds crazy, but before we moved here I acquired about 20 pairs of undies in vivid colors (orange, hot pink, lime green, turquoise...) and I can't think of anything more exquisitely beautiful than brightly-colored, freshly-laundered undies dangling in the sunlight of our patio de ojos. Aside from domestic chores, buying groceries has taken on a whole new appeal. I try not to plan too ... read more
