Mallorca
In front of cathedral Here for a short office trip, for second time. We landed early morning on May 9th. The first thing that hits when I got to Mallorca was - tropical, warm, nice. This is such a difference from the grey skies in Zurich that you ought to love it at first. We came to the hotel and checked in. I have a partial seaview from hotel balconey. Last time I was here, I did not really get time to go out in the city. So this time I decided to go out and see the city. Luckily this time we are staying close to the city center, so I was able to just walk down.
The obvious destination was Cathedral. I was really impressed by it last time. It huge and the architecture is very different from all the other cathedrals I have seen so far. This time I wanted to see it clearly in day light. On the way to cathedral, I saw the street market, small shops selling all sorts of handicraft goods. It said its some kind of merchant navy thing, whatever that means. It was like any other street market, and I did not try to buy
Bellvre Castle
The disney tower anything. The cathedral was as great as I remembered. Its thin pillars are really elegant. Since such thin pillars cannot hold themselves or the building, there are bridges across them to balance the weight. Its a piece of architecture. The building feels lot more elegant than (don't know what's the right word for heavily carved French cathedrals). The main cathedral was closed I think, or there was a 6EUR fee to get in. I decided to just admire it from outside.
After the cathedral, I walked some more in the city, looking at very interesting houses. The houses around cathedral all had very old indian houses style angan in middle with a well, and then huge stairs going up to living quarters. There were also couple of other churches nearby. Then I headed back to hotel. On the way we saw lot of trees full of oranges. I picked one from the ground and tried to eat it, it was bitter. That explains why no one has tried to pick them. Then I saw two tourists struggling to pick one from the tree. I was interested. Then we saw an old local lady walking and telling them to not
Cathedral
With its long thin elegant walls do that. She was saying "no es bueno, no para comer" or something like that. Good, I still understand.
Back at hotel, I was done with dealing with sun for the day. Living in Seattle and then Zurich has really spoiled me. Then I decided to take a nap and maybe head somewhere in evening later. After the nice nap, in evening, I decided to go to a small castle. It was on a small hill right behind our hotel. It claims to be one of the few round castles in Europe. ok, whatever. After some difficulty, we found the way to castle. It was a lot of stairs. But the view from up there was totally worth it. Its more like a fort than a castle though. There is a small 2.60EUR entrance fee, totally worth it. Inside there is small museum with history of Mallorca from beginning to now. You can go up to castle roof and get really good view of Palma city. And yes, the castle is round. There is one huge round tower and by just looking at it, you can imagine a princess locked at the top, looking out waiting to be rescued.
So that was interesting.
Rest of the day was about dinner at some fancy place. Where I think for first time I had Sangria. And I liked it, if only they removed all the sugar from it. We also had long discussion with someone from Spain about how its a cheap drink for students who cannot afford a real one, and then how tourists come here and drink it like its the best drink ever. But the one I had was good 😊
