Friday, April 9 We slept in and then the young people went out to the beach after breakfast. We lazed around in our bathing suits, taking in the sun, and then decided to have some sangria at a cafe nearby. This is when the phrase "Amigos de Vacanzia!" was coined. Never mind that the word for "vacation" in Spanish is "vacationes", Julien started saying "Amigos de Vacazia!" to refer to us, and so it stuck! And for the rest of our time together, this was the phrase that we would often be shouting to refer to each other, but also in random proclamations of sangria-induced joviality. And so, as Amigos de Vacanzia! we sunbathed some more and then decided to borrow the bikes that the adults (read: old people) had rented to go to the ... read more

Thursday, April 8 We hit the road early again, hoping to reach Murcia by late afternoon. All in all we would be driving almost 950 miles from Besancon, France to Murcia, Spain. By late morning we crossed the Spanish border--yipee! Immediately the landscape seemed different. There were rolling hills covered in coarse vegetation, there were yellow flowers dotting the grass patches, there were mountains in the distance (the Pyrenees) and of course: there were orange trees! Orange trees and olive trees as far as the eye could see! We stopped at a cafe along the road for breakfast. I had a pastry, coffee, and fresh squeezed orange juice that was out of this world. The coffee, however, was terrible (Spanish coffee is said to be very low in quality, but then again I was with ... read more

Left Valencia on 22 March and headed towards the south of Spain where we had rented an apartment in Malaga for the week starting 27 March. So had 5 days to get there. We'd booked a B&B in La Manchica which is a small village outside Fuente Alamo near Cartegena. This was the first time the weather has been good enough to get out on our bikes. Cycled into Fuente Alamo and found a WIFI friendly bar. Decided to go back next day and update blog to find that the bar electric was off so sat drinking cider with bar owner and some expats for rest of afternoon. Great fun. Took boat trip around Cartagena bay and got history of city and port. Its a beautiful city largely unknown to Brits. Spent the day exploring. There's ... read more

Hello Everyone. Hasta luego muchachos!!... read more

... read more

Ola Bo & Dud, I forgot to tell you about something strange that I spotted en route to Fortuna. We left the motorway just after Murcia and immediately the scenery changed from being urbanized to rural countryside. Standing in the middle of nowhere was a young woman - low top and short skirt revealing more than enough of her body, and with knee high, black high heeled boots. As I was supposed to be helping look for camp site signs, I only caught a glimpse, but it struck me as being rather unusual. I suggested to Howard that this might be a working girl, but he dismissed this because of where she was and we began to speculate why she would be there. Well!! the following week when we had an outing we overshot our turn ... read more

Ola Bo & Dud Semana Santa - my Spanglish is coming along nicely!! We decided that we would have a quiet Easter - not too much excitement and certainly no chocolate, the eating and drinking are far outweighing the exercise at the moment. The Spanish holiday starts Thursday so the camp site was filling up for most of the day. Good Friday and the place was buzzing so we decided to have an outing - we got 3 kilometres! Fortuna is our nearest town, and as we approached we could see the road ahead through town was closed - 2 Firemen indicated that we should take a right turn and Emily (our Sat Nav) lost the plot. We parked to get our bearings and could hear loud drumming - so off to investigate!! I’ve heard of ... read more

Ola Bo & Dud, I never thought that we would be sad that winter is over. As we know from experience it is difficult to get any sort of travel insurance for more than 6/8 months at a time (did you know that Howard and I are on a ‘gap’ year and we have a policy that is intended to cover students), so Torre del Mar is emptying of the pensionistas heading back to the UK. It took us the best part of a week to prepare for departure. We’ve never had the caravan and awning in one place for such a long period of time and to say that everything was dirty is an understatement. I now know why mud walls are called such - I usually just wipe them over with a wet cloth, ... read more
